Bigger Sheepie Car!

Well, I went to a dog show this morning - not and OES but it was about four minutes from my house so I went to watch and meet a handler recommend to me..

Anyway, it was a Golden speciality...when I saw all the grooming tables, dryers, crates, equipment everyone had, I realized I am going to need a bigger car!!!! 8O

By the way, anyone have those soft sided foldable crates for travel? They seemd to be everywhere...

Yes! Love the softsided crate :D

Have fun shopping for a big car :D , make sure you
get a 4 door. I have a two door and its tough for
my almost 3 year sheepie to get in.

Glad you had fun at the dog show!
I've had one of the soft side for four years and love it.

Good luck and have fun.
Goldens are second favorite dogs.
Yep, that's why I bought a mini van. I said I'd never own a mini van, and years of kids didn't convince me to get one, but showing dogs did.
I won a soft-sided crate from a raffle and it was too small for Bingley but great for our cats to cuddle in. I love it.
It's why I ended up with a mini van.........It was cozy taking 6 to the vets in a Cherokee
I have a wagon, sheepies in the back behind a guard, I also have a guard with a door & lock on it so I can leave the back up too while we set up for the day if it is not an indoor venue......

Gear is loaded in the back seat on the floor, seats, heck right up to the roof nearly 8O

Roof racks too, when going interstate, can tie tents, umbrellas, portable pergolas, crates, gawd lots of stuff on the roof as well. 8)

You seem to accumulate heaps of gear over the years. :P

Where do the Kids go? They are old enough to drive and have there own cars now  No room in mine, only room for sheepie girls and all our stuff
I have a Cherokee and a Honda Element, which I highly recommend as a dog car. I can put all 3 of my dogs easily in the Element and it's really easy to clean. The Cherokee would be excellent for one dog and its accessories but wouldn't leave you any room for expansion. I crammed all 3 dogs in on short trips but only 2 for longer ones. I travel without crates though.

I miss my Mini Cooper, though.

Soft crates are great for travel but unfortunately, they are not always allowed at dog shows. Now, in addition to all the grooming stuff, etc., you must have two crates. A wire crate for the show and a soft crate for the hotel. :excited:

.... now, you really need a larger vehicle! :lmt:

I have a Jeep Liberty that is considered the "Sheepie ride". However, if necessary both of my babies fit comfortably in the back of our Mini.

Are your dogs pretty small? Clyde took up the whole backseat of the Mini by himself but he is a bit of a seat hog! Bear couldn't even get in. Think Chris Farley "fat man in a little coat." I'm going to buy another Mini when the Traveler model comes out. I don't have room for any more cars right now anyway.
I started showing with a soft crate and then immediately moved to a metal crate which Frank seemed to like better anyhow. Even though they are heavier, you can put your grooming tack box on top etc.. Plus you should also get a lock for your crate at dog shows as it's easy to secure your dog while you run to the restroom or concession. Plus you can lock your purse, etc. in it as you go to the ring. And Maggie McGee is right, some dog shows forbid the soft crates. Buy or make a dolly for your crate and you can pile all your stuff on it as you load & unload.

I use my Honda Element for doggie transport, which worked great, but really any car is fine, especially hatchbacks, that you can stick your gear & dog in securely.
I think this one is adorable!

Did you guys go XL? There were several L ones that were up to 75lbs, and Yuki is only 63lbs. At first I was thinking we would never need one, but maybe we should get one... or a normal plastic crate.

We have a SUV that has a plastic back so it's easy to clean, but we can't imagine not giving Yuki enough space to take up at LEAST the entire back, so we're getting a mini van (honda or toyota) once Mr. J gets back. We need the size up to fit luggage, our cats, and kids.
I am hoping to get some soft sided crates soon, WAY easier to lug around...
I dont do dog-shows, but I'm amused at how simular the dilemas are to doing the art-fair circit !

We graduated some years ago to a 350 diesal crew-cab truck...and now we're shopping for a small utility-trailer!
Last year before I got my sheepie, I got a new Kia Sportage...My Old Cherokee finally had to go with almost 200 thousand miles...If I had known I was going to get a sheepie a year later, I would have gotten a Hummer for him...and all his stuff

Now there is an idea for a new car...big enough for you and your sheepie and ALL his gear...maybe even a bag of your own stuff :) My hubby's been at me for years to travel light...now I'll have to!
We travel frequently from Indiana to the South Carolina shore and had packed all our beach gear in our Honda CR-V with two adults and two sheepies.

Finally, things were too crowded with all our stuff so we bought a Honda Pilot. My husband threatened bodily harm if I told anyone the reason we bought a bigger car was for the dogs... but it was true! :hearts:

Not small at all. My husband made a little platform to fill the drop in back by the hatch. With the seat down, both can lay in back. But, we don't take long trips

Mini Van's are for wimps  And as far as mini's go, I could put one in the back of the new van with room to spare

Come on guys get serious about this and move up to a full sized van :!: When the safety Nazi's wouldn't pass our perfectly good Ford Aerostar mini-van so it could be licensed after moving to Quebec we ended up getting a full sized Ford E-150 Chateau Van. (We had wanted one anyway but we ended up getting one much quicker than we otherwise would have.) While it could be configured for 12 passengers in "cattle car" mode the Chateau trim level has it set up for 7 passengers, with 4 captain's chairs and a three seat folding bed/bench seat. There is enough room behind the bench to fit 4 Varikennel 500's, two wide by two high. When we go to show's we will remove the 3 seat bench and we'll be able to have all 8 dogs in their travel crates with no problem. :cheer: :cheer: The two footer kids will LOVE that as before they ended up having the Afghans lying on them in the Aerostar. :ghug: No not quite a group hug they tell me!!! 8O Sheesh spoiled pair wanting to travel without an Afghan lap /body/head warmer - go figure   Now with their own individual seats and a fitted tv/vcr/dvd system (the Chateau has a high topper on it which contains the TV cupboard) we should be able to travel without the "when will we get there?" whines. :high5: :go: Our kids learned not to ask "are we there yet" when I kept answering by asking them "is the van stopped?", "do you see a hotel or dog show?" and "have I parked and turned the engine off yet?" to which they of course answered "no" and I ended it by saying "so there's your answer, did you really need to ask?". :lmt: I know I'm a mean old fart but it worked really well - and yes you can use those lines on your two footers -at least until Matt figured out the "when will we get there" question - not quite so easy to deflect but a whole lot less annoying. to answer with a time estimate. I still have to get a utility trailer for all the extra's but at least the gang is now well accomodated on road trips. :yay:

Comfort - excellent,
Space - really good (a 15 passenger chassis would be perfect...)
Fuel mileage  - if you have to ask you're not thinking of your dogs first  besides you DON't Want TO Know :!:

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
I have to admit, Carl seems to have the 'car of choice"! At Westminister I started asking about what car people have and many said either a mini van or a full van :) But Carl, I am an old fart too and I just can't get myself to drive a van again...although the vans in my day were THE auto to have 8)

Gas mileage...even my smaller SUV gets crappy gas mileage...

Maybe I'll just have my husband ride on the roof racks

Ashley,

We have the E-150 Chateau not because we think that it is a great car but because we need it for the pack, although I am surprisingly very pleased with the way that it rides. :o Given MY choice I'd rather go back to my old Porsche 944 or even my Ford Probe GT. :go: Both of them were a lot of fun to drive but as far as kid transport, 4 or 2 footed variety, they would be rather lacking. As "they" say, dogs and kids will be the death of me yet!!!
Now if I could ever win the lottery I'd get a 45ft conversion bus and go on the dog show circuit full time in the summer ..... What you have to buy a ticket to win  .... Bummer
