wanted new sheepdog puppies

We have had 2 beautiful sheepdogs. One we had to put down at 12 years the other at 14. I think we are ready to start anew. Any ideas or recommendations?

If you decide to get an OES puppy - please read the following "Tips for Buying an OES Puppy"

Be sure to get a referral for a reputable breeder and research any and all breeders carefully...

A responsible breeding program can mean all the difference in the world -you want to go through a reputable breeder who takes great care in the health and temperment of their dogs!

Good Luck!

Well, I have to disagree with the above reply on some points.

The OESCA is strictly run by breeders. The 'common' pet owner has no voice and no input there. At least, that has been my personal experience.

You will notice as you go to the above link that it remarks that 'reputable breeders will insist that all puppies be neutered'. Sorry, I just hate someone telling me that I can't have an animal unless I do X to it so that it won't be in competition with the breeder's animals.

I do agree that a prospective purchaser should insist on medical history and clearance for any puppy purchased. That's just being smart.

Need a clear hereditary line for the puppy in order to get AKC registration. AKC registration is a MUST. No excuses on that point.

Also, it's always good to see the parents of your puppy. Preferably both if possible. Seeing them and how they look and are cared for will give you a good idea of the quality of puppy you are looking at and the type of people you are dealing with.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with getting a puppy from a non-professional breeder as long as you are assured of the above points and the breeder is not acting as a 'puppy mill'. If the dog is to be a family pet, what do you care if it's not gold plated show quality? Of the OES I've known the better dogs were NOT professionally bred (something about a broader and deeper gene pool . . .)

Okay, there's my two coppers.
John,

I'm not indicating that they should ONLY go through an OESCA breeder - however - the Breeder Referral person for OES (even through the AKC site) is Janet Loehr and her contact information is readily available on OESCA website. Janet is the referral contact but as I stated - even with a referral - they should research ALL breeders themselves. I would have provided the Breeder Referral link from the AKC but it isn't working this morning!

The article - although also on OESCA website - is helpful for anyone looking for a puppy -whether they go through an OESCA breeder or not!

Responsible breeders will insist on the dog being neutered unless arrangements have been made via a contract that you will be breeding and/or showing the dog! That should be the case in my opinion. They don't want you recklessly breeding a dog from their kennel without following the ethical guidelines they adhere to. Contrary to what some like to say - breeders don't insist on neutering because they are afraid of the competition! Please - give me a break! Many breeders would be thrilled to find that you were willing to put the effort and time into showing one of their pups!

In terms of AKC registration - in my opinion - it is useless when evaluating a breeder! Any litter (even puppy mill bred) can be registered through the AKC - it doesn't mean anything in terms of the quality of dog and/or health and temperment! You need an application and some $$$ to register a litter - you don't need a clear hereditary line. In fact, the AKC doesn't do anything to monitor whether or not the litter is and/or even could be from the sire/dam they are being registered under.

I certainly don't care about the "gold plated SHOW quality" of any of my dogs - but I care about the health and temperment and would make sure that the "non-professional breeder" that you are selecting have performed all the suggested testing on the sire/dam and they are breeding with consideration of health and temperment first and foremost! There are no guarantees - but you certainly give yourself better odds!

JMHO.
