Anyways, I let it dry, even put it in the oven for a few minutes. I washed it by hand, nothing came off, I used comet and a scrub brush....still good. BUT...the dishwasher took alot off of it....Maybe my dishwasher is stronger. Is there something else I am missing? Did they spray it after with a protective coat? I have 11 coffee mugs waiting to be designed...but I want it to work right. I googled alot of different ways, and there is nothing to help me. Can you find out if I missed a step? Maybe the nail polish 10 years ago was different than today? I really want to do this, hubby even got his female co-workers to bring old nailpolishes for me to use. HELP |

Can you you use spray lacquer over top to seal it all in? |
I don't know. I was gonna tape off the mouth area...keep it safe.
So I was wondering the same thing. I finally found one website: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_painting_ot ... 30,00.html Does this mean I can use nail polish? Then spray coat it? |
If I understand correctly the key is to let everything cure....not just dry between the enamel paint (fingernail polish) and the top coat.
Last year I got into painting with Donna Dewberry and OneStroke http://www.onestroke.com They have enamel paints specifically designed for projects on glass. I have several of her books (unfortunately still packed in boxes downstairs....grrr). If I run into them in the next few days I'll let you know what they say. Remember when they say dishwasher safe they mean top rack. |
It also said in the tips section at the bottom of the page...

To make the cups permanent and dishwasher safe, wait at least six days before using. So maybe you just washed it too soon. |
Yeah I read that too...after the washing LOL...and I also put it on the bottom, not thinking about top washing.
Banging head on table I got hubby to print off these instructions, and I will highlight the 6 days part. I want to make this a keepsake last. Should I be spraying a top coat? I will have the cup upside down, and the mouth area still taped off. They have Varnish listed but don't say what kind...does it matter? |
OK. I had to call my son in Thunder Bay, He couldn't remember making me the mug in grade 5 So I had to email him the pictures and he remembered.
Actually, he remember too well, and said that the mug was not made for me, but for my husband...Apparently the lines down the side are a hammer, nail, a crow bar and a wrench...Who wouda thunk? And I asked why it says "I heart Mom" he said that is what my husband would be thinking.... Anyways, he doesn't recall them being coated with anything, but did say that they sat in the classroom for a few days before the kids brought them home. I checked it well, and there doesn't seem to be anyting over top. There are even a couple bubbles that were broken, and came off. Oh, and one more thing, I always wash our mugs on the top shelf..But if they are going to be used at work they are normally just washed and rinced by hand, anyway.. |
Thanks Nicole I really appreciate you calling..so sorry that he meant that cup for dad...LOL. Maybe the teachers put something on at the end of the day. I got some non-toxic varnish, so I will just coat their painted areas.
It must be the sitting that makes it tough. I will also reccommend hand washing, or top shelf only. Well I have confirmed 9 girls coming, and 1 girl is going to Jasper. It should be a full house. I was really hoping only 5 girls could come...as I have 6 chairs that fit our table. Might have to use the kids play table. I am happy tho that we got a great response and all the girls really wanted to come...makes me feel good that Madelyn is doing okay in the friends dept, despite not having a BFF. Parker is very excited about his special day with daddy...now I gotta figure out where and what they can do. |
