Hi and welcome to the forum.
OES don't have a shedding season. Once they blow out their puppy coat they don't shed again. However, they do have a lot of hair and like me some of it falls out or breaks off, so there is a bit of hair around all the time. They are a big dog, and they smell like a dog. Less if you wash them more, more if you wash them less. Read around the forum, there is a TON of info on here, and most of the thread titles are pretty accurate-- at least at the beginning of the thread! |
OES don't shed/malt like other dogs. Hair comes out while brushing and you do get dust bunnies around the place.
They don't smell doggie either, if they get wet they sort of smell like a wet wool sweater. There is a lot of information on this forum, so have a read through all the different parts of the forum to learn more about the breed. |
I am not an expert by any means !!I have 2 labs (SHED a LOT)a german Shepherd,(Sheds a LOT) and an OES. I really don't see where he sheds. Some hair probably drops out and when I groom I pull out hairs and undercoat!! My point here is GROOM GROOM GROOM. These dogs are wonderful!! clowns, lovable, hard headed, loving fuzz butts. But you need to keep up with the brushing or they will matt.Their beard tends to get stinky but I just spray with a no rinse shampoo and dry. Matts (for me anyway) seem to pop up at any time and I think it is because I don't groom as well as I should. I still would not trade him for a million bucks Just wanted you to be aware of the coat upkeep. They are LOVELY dogs. |
I don't think they smell any more than any other dog. And they definitely shed less than most shorter-haired breeds. Like it was said above, you get dust bunnies of fur...just clumps, instead of like a Lab or something that leaves those sharp short hairs everywhere all the time. |
No shed. No stink. |
All I can say is that my sheepdog sheds much less than my pug, which is about 1/5 of her size. Just keep a good lint brush around, and you'll be okay.
And I think my sheepie smells good, actually. Maybe I'm just a weird mom, but I love the way she smells. Of course, if she goes outside and rolls around in the mud, she smells gross - but so do I |

What about frito feet??????? Altho, its a smell Ive come to love...... |
They don't shed, but you'll definitely will spend more time with grooming than you would vacuuming up a dog that sheds. They are not known to have the doggie odor other dogs with more dander have. But again, they can definitely get messier/dirtier than short-haired breeds that can just shake it off. Everything you can think of can stick to their hair or fling off their wet beards. |
No shedding like other long hair dogs. OES "shed" sort of like human hair does. Strands of hair , here and there. And smelly? I would say no..except for, yes, the "frito feet"...but you ahve to get down low to notice
I would recommend though that you research the breed and possibly go visit someone with a full grown Sheepie. Because of their coat, they are considered a "high maintenance" breed and you have to know in advance that brushing regularly is a committment you have to make if you want an OES. Or at least if you want to keep your OES from getting heavily matted, etc. Also, consider the expense of a big dog as an adult...big dogs eat more food which means you have to buy more than you would with a little dog, bigger dogs use a bigger crate, more expensive that the smaller ones, bigger dog will go through a few collars while growing, etc. Just something to keep in mind.. Besides the coat issue, the OES has a "clown" personality and because they can get rather large, so you might want to consider that if you ahve small children... In general, research as much info as you can about the breed, maybe visit a show in the area or a breeder in the area, visit the OES Club site and ask ALOT of questions. The OES is a wonderful breed...but it's not for everyone |

You people are warped! lol Lacey has frito feet and it makes me nauseous as she sleeps with her feet in my face. |
Frito feet, just too gross |
I love the frito feet........and the mothball nose. Does your OES smell right behind the nose? Not all of mine have had the smell, but these two do.
Anyway, certain doggie stinks are due to metabolic problems, so yes, an OES can stink if they are ill. Some breeds also have more stinkers naturally.......I'm thinking Airedale is one. Not all 'airheads' stink, but I've met too to believe they were isolated cases. |
I love frito feet too. Both my maltese and yuki smelled like it last night. She just had a bath a few days ago too. Mr. J calls my maltese popcorn since that's what he thinks she smells like, even though frito would be more accurate. |
We have frito feet here too. Seeing I actually like fritos - I think they smell good. Way better than human feet! |
I wonder if the Frito monster has feet that smell like a dog? |
You guys make me crack up I needed a real laugh tonight!
So, onto something else...how about "puppy breath"...is there a name for that? |
this discussion actually made me have to pick up one of my dog's feet and smell it! . Ok...you weren't kidding... They really ARE frito-scented! |
My most frito smelling pet is Raindrop. She is our Llama!!
The frito smell was extremely strong today. I think perhaps because the animals have been staying in the barn more with the cold weather -it's more concentrated! I would much rather have that smell than some smells you find in a barn. |
I will only say it one more time
Doggie perfume!!! Aud de Nautural |
