Im having problems grooming my dogs feet, i think they must be really sensitive because everytime i go to touch them or brush them he tucks them under himself or keeps pulling away no matter how hard I hold on to his foot. He goes to the groomer every 6wks but in between him going to the groomers they get quite matted. Any suggestions??? |

Feet are definitely can be more sensitive, especially if a quick got cut on his nail at some point. I always recommend handling the paws in general, frequently. Like if you are sitting down next to him while he's laying, just pet/stroke them to get him used to being handled. I would also recommend getting yourself a good slicker brush like doggieman brand (not pin brush or comb) and use that to brush if you're not doing so already. They don't seem to mind be brushed with the slicker as much for some reason. Just part the hair while you brush, just like if you were line brushing, small gentle strokes. |
I would just handle his paws as much as you can to get him used to it. Obe was the same way at first but now he will let me trim nails and the hair around his pads and doesn't mind to much. Every once in a while he will jerk his paw back, but for the most part he just lays there and lets me do whatever it is that needs to be done. I have handled his paws since I got him though, so he is pretty much used to it. |
Be sure to play with the"toes" too...I've been doing that and now my little guy doesn't mind...of course after I play with them a while, he gets a treat. So, he associates getting his feet and toes touched with a goody |

I find that I can go to town with a slicker but the pin brush elicits immediate jerk aways. I like the small Chris Christensen slicker. |
Thanks for all of your comments, greatly appreciated will definately try the slicker brush. |
