I notice that he tends to run from group to group, circling and rounding them up. If a dog breaks out of the group or it runs off as a pack, Charlie will cut in front of them and round them up again. Once that group is stationary, he will go off to another group of dogs. If two dogs get into it a little, Charlie often will put himself between them. He is bigger them most dogs in the park and he is seems to be very even tempered, showing neither dominant nor submissive behavior. If a dog acts aggressively toward him or tries to mount him, Charlie will spin around, protecting his head and neck until the other dog stops or will give him a little growl but he never allows himself to get into a fight. All of these behaviors seem to me like they might be some kind of herding instinct at work. Does anyone have similar experiences with their sheepdog when around groups of unfamiliar animals? |

Sounds like typical sheepie behavior and a great dog.....Kathy |
Yep, sounds very typical!!!!
You should find out if anyone has sheep near you!!! I bet your OES would love to play ...I mean herd... them!!! We do it here for $10 a session. |
lol we are running into the same problem with our shepherd trying to herd our oes puppy, it gets quite comical when they are outside. |
Yup, OES were bred to herd. It's what they do! |
Definitely herding behavior. Chewie and his Samoyed friend constantly race around and herd each other. It's pretty entertaining .
You should try and find some herding classes and give it a whirl! Very fun. |
