I picked up Spanky in mid-September from a high-kill shelter where he'd been turned in by his owners who were "going to be travelling a lot". He was a very sweet and well mannered boy that you would immediately adore. Here he is, shortly after I got him, with Treasure standing behind him. As a side note, he & Treasure were both from the same general (50-mile) area, share similar markings and the same odd length tail docking. I suspect they are from the same BYB whom we would very much like to see shut down. But that's another story for another day. Here he is after I cut the hair on his face. I don't like the shaved body with the face left long. Looks weird to me. As I said, he is a total sweetheart and very easy to love. Still, we went through many applications over a two month period, before we found the perfect family for him. We had several folks interested in him, but for various reasons, they just weren't the right fit for Spanky. Spanky's perfect family came along in early November and he moved to Atlanta. Since then, he's been the epitome of the pampered pooch and everyone in his new household just adores him , especially his Mom. She works from home, so Spanky is with her all of the time. This past Saturday, she was in her office working with Spanky asleep at her feet. Spanky got up and started pawing at her as if he needed to be let out. She told him he'd already been out several times and could he just wait a bit until she finished what she was doing. But, Spanky was insistent, urgently pawing at her to be let out. So, she got up, slipped on her shoes, put on his leash and took him outside for a brief walk around the block. When they returned, she found her house engulfed in flames. They lost everything. The house burned completely to the ground. The fire inspector later told her that something electrical sparked and the house went up very quickly, apparently, only moments after she & Spanky left the house. She credits Spanky with saving her life. We always say dogs have a "sixth sense" about such things. I don't know how or what he knew, but it sure makes for a great story of how she rescued him and he rescued her. The family and Spanky are all fine. As Paul Harvey would say, "and now you know, the REST OF THE STORY". |

Wow! What a great story about Spanky!! Although I feel badly that they lost everything, what they lost was material. Thankfully they're safe! |
WOW |
Wow, I hope Spanky didn't start the fire himself and that's how he knew what was up...
Just kidding, that's awesome! |
Way to go, Spanky! I'm so sorry to hear about his house though |
Yes, it is terrible about the house, I agree. But, when she spoke to our placement director, she (his Mom) was very upbeat, saying basically that it's "just things" and the fact that everyone is okay is so much more important. Definitely has the right attitude.
When I told this story to my sister last night, I lead with the house burning down and she said "I thought this was supposed to be a happy story". So, I thought it through a bit more before telling y'all. |
Great story...maybe his name should be Sparky!! Or Smokey |
Wow, Spanky is a hero! A much happier ending than what could have been... |
Those type of fires smolder a bit where they start, so Spanky smelled that and knew something was wrong. We all hope our dogs come through for us in any similar situation. Bless his heart!
The only heroic thing my dog's have done for me is alert there was a mouse behind the cabinets. |
What a good dog! Yay Spanky!!
Sad about the house. But what an amazing dog. |
Wow, that gave me chills!! |
Oh do I have goose bumps!! |

Amazing, spanky was definately meant to be there with her, right time, right place.
Sixth Sense in animals always amazes me, maybe we should listen to them more often. Hugs for Spanky a Hero on 4 legs. Thanks Tammy for sharing that |
YAY Ibet he gets treats now whenever he wants them, what a good boy |
What a great story. Way to go Spanky! |
WOWOWOW!! Thank you for sharing.... I've read about animals sensing danger, whether it be storms or fires. Also, medical issues as well like actually being able to smell cancers...etc....then you have service dogs and the list goes on.....
Dogs are amazing...!! GOOO SPANKY!!! I'm sorry to hear they lost everything. Michelina~ |
