Poor Olive. I am sure she doesn't look like a rat.
You'll get used to it and think she's pretty again in no time. It is a big shock though. |
Poor Olive
I am sure is still really cute!! |
I have read that it is really hard to keep the matts out of puppies when they go through the coat change. Is there any suggestions on what to do so that I dont have to end up shaving Obe. Besides the brushing of course. |
When does this coat change happen? I don't want to shave Laika! |
Normally right around 9 months. But it varies a lot dog to dog. I had Pip shaved to about 1.5" before he hit that age.. it was brutally hot that summer, and we had a lot easier time with his coat change, and that length was adorable. The only problem I really had with matting was on his ears and snout... the only parts they didn't cut short. |
If the mats are bad, you did the right thing by shaving Olive. She will feel better, and you get another chance to start out fresh.
Chewie is 9 months, and his coat is getting to be work. And he is great for grooming/bathing too. If we weren't showing, we probably would trim a few inches off to make this stage easier. Last night LeAnne and I spent a couple hours on a partial bath, nail trim and total comb through. |
If you think the Puppy to junior coat transition is hard, well the next one to really look forward to, Junior to Mature coat. The matt fairies come out in large attacking gangs then Pesty things they are |
Oh, you guys are scaring me! My pup is just 12 weeks and I brush him every day religiously..his coat is to thick..I'm afraid of what is ahead of me! |
ack! Wait a minute, NO ONE ever told me there was a SECOND coat change???!!! |
I knew about the second coat change but I really do not want to shave Obe unless it absolutely necessary. All I can say is I have my work cut out for me, which I already knew. Just did not know about coat changes being more difficult. O-well goota love the OES, because he does me. |
We made it to the 2nd coat change with Ollie . We brushed, but weren't really good at line brushing, and got behind. He ended up with twice yearly haircuts for the rest of his life. Being an active farmdog had a lot to do with that decision. Practicality won out! |
Yep 2 major coat transitions
http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=10404 Just think by the time they are fully mature, you will have nice firm arms from all that brushing. |
Olive's Mom, I had the same thing happen last month with Harley .
My post is 'Harley is naked. Shhh.. don't laugh he is so embarrassed.' There are pictures of him in a sweatshirt he had to keep on so he was less embarrassed. Look at the pictures ,they will make you feel less alone...LOL Antoinette |
Don't feel so bad I threw up on Antietam National Battlefield ( near our home ) on the way home from the shave with our 1st coat change clip. Then I cried and told him I was sorry the rest of the night. He looked like a GD puppy. He is going through the second change now, and mats faster than I can brush, but they're calling for highs in the teens here for the next week so no clips in our immediate future. |
HOW FUNNY I CRIED AND LAUGHED. sEE OLIVE REALLY IS FUNNY ABOUT IT. SHE JUST KEEPS LOOKING AROUND AT HER BUT AND I SWEAR SHE IS LOOKING FOR HAIR. AND TO BE SURE THIS IS OLIV'E 2ND COAT CHANGE. I MADE IT THROUGHT THE PUPPY ONE AND NOW SHE IS 13 MONTHS AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HER HAIR IS JUST CRAZY. I WAS AT THE GROOMER EVERY 10 DAYS BECAUSE I CAN'T DO THE LINE BRUSHING EITHER. O AND TO BOOT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE SAFE I AM IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND WE USUALLY HAVE WARMER WEATHER. BUT O' NO WE GOT SNOW TODAY AND MY POOR RAT IS COLD I MEAN COLD AND I AM JSUT SO SORRY OLIVE I PUBLICLY ADMIT I SCREWED UP. |
Don't be so hard on yourself, it is really hard to keep a coat when the transitions are happening. My first show sheepie, I got into a huge mess, was not line grooming properly down to skin level. When it was discovered the clumping at skin level, well between me and the breeder, 4 days to unknot .If she was not being shown I would of opted for a shave down then. We all make boo boos and it is a hard stage and we learn from that too
Olive will be fluffy before you know it, if she is feeling the cold at the moment, pop a coat or t-shirt on her to help there. |
Lauren Alice,Aww Don't feel bad, I am sure Olive looks just beautiful. I just shaved mine a few weeks ago and just took them to the groomer for her to 'fix' what I had done. It is better for Olive to be shaved than to have to go thru all that brushing to get the mats out. At least that was how I looked at it. Either one hour of shaving or several days of brushing. I am sure the dogs would rather be shaved in that case.
And don't worry about the cold. My 2 only noticed it for a day or 2. And it is really cold here now (I'm in Canada) Hugs |
I agree! This happened to Willoughby just before Xmas. He was 20 months and very matted. I felt very guilty. He was really bare, to the skin after his shave and not a happy camper. I bought him a bright blue winter coat and covered him with a baby blanket at night to cheer him up! He looked so handsome in his blue coat and actually swaggered around when we went out for walks. His coat has now come in to about 1-1/2" and feels very wiry. He no longer needs his blue coat and is just fine. |
