What is the supplement? What is its purpose? eg.(cranberry - bladder / glucosamine - joints) How often? What brand or dosage? If it is something for "older" dogs when did you start? please list other details if you have them |

I use Linatone (found at pet stores w/an OES on it)
It helps keep their coat shiny and healthy. When I don't use it [in the winter], she has a few flakes. It's 1 tsp per 20lbs. I just give it to her directly. She thinks it's a huge treat and LOVES it. I don't put it in her food b/c I handfeed. that would suck ...for me. It contains essential nutrients needed in diet for normal skin and lustrous coats. that's a direct quote from the bottle. Has vitamin D, E, choline, vitamin A, and linoleic acid |
Oh, I forgot... she also gets a glucosamine chondroitin supplement (both my dogs actually). |
Dixie gets Missing Link....for skin, coat, and immune system boosting. ...for overall general good health.... Has tons of stuff in it, all naturel so it needs to be kept in the fridge and has a shelf life of about 3 months.
All the contents are recognizable...None of those 18 letter ingredients that I have no idea what it is.. |
Barney get glucosamine once a day (I can't remember the brand, but it's for humans, found at Costco and is berry-flavored)...about 2 tablespoons (or glugs) onto his kibble. This is hopefully to help prevent his hips from getting too bad too fast |

Do you actually handfeed all of her food? I read about that before for agility dogs (which I am training both of mine to be). Can you tell me more? |
I use glucosamine on Chewie and Simon. Chewie because he is in a rapid growth time, and Simon because he will be 8 in April and we are competing in Rally and it involves jumping (and he's a basset!). I was told by a natural food expert friend to just use the glucosamine, not the mix with chondroitin. I guess there have been studies where they kind of cancel each other out. I use the human stuff. 1000mg capsules. I pull the capsules apart and sprinkle it on top of their food. It apparently doesn't taste bad, they eat it right up.
Also use yogurt, 1-2 tbsp depending on the size of dogs. Once daily on their dog food. You need the kind with active cultures for health benefits. It aids digestion, also is beneficial to the skin, coat and ears. I noticed a BIG difference in Simon's ears. Bassets are notorious for having chronic ear problems. When I adopted him, he had large amts of dark waxy stuff coming out of his ears (no infection, just junky). I had to clean it at least every other day. The black stuff cleared up, and we easily go 1 week or more. I do clean them mostly at least once a week, because he always goes on therapy dog visits with clean, soft ears!! I don't use Missing Link, but I have friends who do and they are happy with it. Some use it all the time, some use it as a preventative , and others use it when there dog gets sick or stressed physically. |
kerry, I'm not sure what more I can offer. I started handfeeding to establish who was alpha when I brought Yuki home AND because Yuki isn't very lady-like when she eats. She doesn't CHEW/bite any kibbles, which isn't good for her teeth! She also eats w/o taking a breather. So I handfeed her about 3-5 kibbles at a time, and have for 2 years. My friends always tell me that takes too long, but it doesn't take more than a few minutes (i've timed) even at 3-4 kibbles a bite, so why can't I give that to my dog? After doing it for a few months and doing it several different ways (placing it on her tongue or in the back of her mouth, she began CHEWING her food. If I act rushed, she will just swallow her food though...
So... handfeeding has just been a way of life for us, and has shown to be beneficial for Yuki. My toddler now feeds Yuki and our maltese. |

Hmm, I'll have to look into that! I have been told by vets in tx, ok, and now here in ak that it doesn't work for the dogs unless it contains BOTH! |
Very interesting!! I'll have to do a little research too, I guess. I definitely want it to do the most good! |
me too! Because the people I know and the patients at the vet clinic I worked at all have marvelous things to say about taking it, and how it helped their animals. |
I am a "Missing Link" Person too.
They have two, Missing Link Plus has all the joint supplements in it as well. Good stuff |
Dudster wrote: Bosley's mom wrote: Dixie gets Missing Link... Where do you get this Nicole.. I would like try Murphy on this... I get it from my vet. A bag that costs around $17 will last a couple months. This is the only site I can find quick that lists the ingredients: http://www.vetsnab.com/missing-link-dog ... -bag-.html If your vet doesn't carry it they may be able to order it in.... Lisa, where do you get yours? |
I've seen it at Petco here (as well as their website), but I don't know what stores Dudster has... |
we have Pet Unlimited.. but I won't shop there....but we are getting a Petscetera.. soon.
I will ask our vet if they carry it. |

Just from a local Pet supply Store, I actually asked them to get it in for me. Most will do that for you if they do not carry what you want. Here is a link of the "Missing Link Plus" and what is in it too. http://www.pfwh.com/discount-missink-li ... -info.html Just a few added extras compared to the original formula. Either are wonderful. |
