Marley,
They can be stubborn - that is for sure! She's testing you - and by the sounds of it - you're doing the right thing. If you say COME and she doesn't - lead her to you just like you said - but then end your session for the time being. You can teach this while she is attached to a long lead - that way if she doesn't COME as you have commanded - you can pick up the lead and "lead" her to you - rather than you going to her! Eventually, you won't need the lead. The "COME" command is one of the most important I think. If a dog is only going to learn one command - this should be it. It can be a command that could save their life one day! Keep your training sessions short - they have a very limited attention span at that age - so you don't want to over do it. She will get bored and her stubborness will shine through! Drop It will take some time. You have to time it well. When she has something in her mouth - you can gently remove it and at the same time say "Drop It" and reward her. You can also wait until she drops something from her mouth naturally - and say "Drop It" - Good Girl and reward. She'll eventually connect the command with dropping whatever she has in her mouth out. Hopefully, she'll learn this before it is the time where she decides to taste POOP - that's always fun having to "remove" that from their mouths! You will learn this in training - as well as "Leave It" - another very useful command! |
Lola is doing pretty well with commands. Though we're still working on Drop. She'll do it some of the time. But I've noticed if she has something she knows she's not supposed to (ie poop, or sticks or flowers), and I say drop, she'll run away and try to gulp it down. Any suggestions for that? I usually end up prying it out of her mouth (though luckily she has mostly stopped with the poop). |
this info is good my puppy is the same way he is clumsy. He listens sometimes and sometimes he doesn't. thanks |
OFF TOPIC:
your dog is clumsy too eh? i hear it's mostly because they are such a large breed. they start out at only a few pounds and now (at 4 months) Jack is almost 40 pounds. it's probly difficult to judge a body getting so big so fast, or so my vet says. it IS cute when they bump into stuff with their big ol' wiggly butts isn't it? |
Oh yeah, she is sooo clumsy. And the funniest thig is when she lies down, she kinda plops down. She is getting better and bigger every day. Doing good on the leash too. She pulls on it sometimes and then gags. Yeek. I can't immagine my life without her! She turned 3 months. My baby is growing so fast. I have to post some pics! |
Jack actually tends to do the same, when he wants attention, he will sit right next to your leg, and either paw at it (awww) or lean on it. either way he sets his body off center and eventually plops down like a sak of potatoes. |
Hey Ed, where in NY are you? I am in Brooklyn. Maybe we should get the two puppies together for a playdate? |
When Jack was younger he would come sit next to me and stare at me, now he brings a ball and puts it in my lap and stares. He can play ball for hours on end. Annabelle has always just climbed up and lay next to us or bounce around. She is very bouncey. It is funny when she gets in her hyper moods.
These sheepies are characters aren't they? Stormi and co. |
When Mopsey wants attention she comes up and bumps me with her nose! Or nips at my legs. Then, looks at me and runs!!!! She is soo cute! I gave her her fist marrow bone today and she loved it. Growled at the cats when they came near her, but she would let me and hubby take the thing right out of her mouth! Still jumps and nips, though. Working on that. She is a really good girl. I can't immagine having any other dog now. So naughty and fun! |
I am glad Mopsey is doing so well! I was lucky with both not to have to worry about jumping or nipping. They only do that to each other and not to us. LOL Annabelle loves to chase Jack and nip his ankles. It is quite a sight to see the larger sheepie running from the littler one. I hope Mopsey and Jack (Ed's Jack ) get to play soon. We have a sheepie in our neighborhood named Sam, but he didn't like Jack and Annabelle. They get to play with my moms 2 dogs during visits though. They love it. Stormi and co. |
