Yes it is possible for your dog to have kennel cough anyway, the vaccine is not very effective and the vaccine itself makes a lot of dogs sick.
I'd call your vet... |
Thanks, Willowsprite. You've responded to my questions several times in the past year and I really appreciate the help.

I agree with Willowsprite...I would call the Vet..coughing up any :foamy" stuff should be checked out..good luck. |
Most definitely yes. We have had 2 dogs get the shot and develop kennel cough afterwards. Once you are through the medicine and they get well and you keep them vaccintated they don't ever seem to develop kennel cough again. |
Mick has a friend who has recently spent alot of time at the kennel. I'm pretty sure she got the KC vaccine or picked up KC there. She came here and played - and while my dog that has been vaccinated alot in the past got a week-long bout of KC - Mick - who has had very minimal vaccines- gagged twice in the middle of the night and that was it.
From what I've heard - I support what Willowsprite said - the vaccine is what seems to cause most cases of KC or the shedding from the vaccine. In a local dog day care - they actually started asking people NOT to vaccinate the dogs with KC because they found those dogs that chose not to get the vaccine - didn't get KC and those that did get the vaccine - almost always GOT the KC. There are also some fairly nasty side-affects caused by KC. I will try to track them down - Willowsprite - do you remember where this was posted? On TAV or Jstsayno? Are you on both lists or another list - like maybe Christie's list?? Judy & Mick |
I am on TAV, not the others.
I do believe TAV has a comprehensive amount of info available on various reactions to various vaccines. All pretty frightening when you really look it over. For example, the distemper vaccine can cause synovi sarcoma. |
There are soooo many KC like virus' running around, that the vax can't cover them all. I sometimes wonder, why bother other than most facilities now require proof of vax before admitting dog for grooming, boarding, doggie-daycare or training. Oh bother.
If you push on the trachea, does the dog cough? That would be indication for several different KC variations. KC is viral, if the coughing is due to a bacteria, then antibiotics can be prescribed. Have you taken the doggie's temp? That would help determine if your pupper is ill and maybe moving towards pneumonia. Otherwise, let him rest, remove his collar to prevent further pressure on the trachea (if it is irritated) and he should be fine in time. |
My lab - when she got kennel cough - I didn't bother with the vet - they really don't help much. Instead - I gave her honey on a regular basis and supplemented her with colostrum.
I normally wouldn't do the colostrum with Mick only because with him -I do homeopathy and supplements aren't something I'd add to the picture - but the lab is treated traditionally in this household and thus - I chose supplements. Colostrum is an immune boosters and she did well - never had the frothy stuff - just the constant cough and gagging toward the end. She never lost appetite or seemed tired - she is 8. So - try the honey -works well - Judy |
