I'm going to build a nice ex-large cage for them, I found a very easy thing on the web that I can do. I was wondering if your guinea pig cage has an extra level, and if so do they use it? Bye for now from Roseabelle and Tanzy (2 "Treehouse" girls) My kids love them and it seemed to fit the pigs. Do you get that channel, ALL kid shows ALL day long? Bev |

I'm amazed that shelters have guinea pigs... lol... but then, our local shelter doesn't get many animals in it anymore, thank goodness. Even now, in the height of kitten and puppy season, they have only one adult cat, that the shelter is likely going to keep as another 'mascot'. I think it speaks well for spay/neuter programs that we got going in full force several years ago. There are no puppies in the paper, none in the shelter, and a local breeder of siberian huskies takes all lost animals and boards them till their owners are found, and we usually do find them! The only thing is, it is very difficult now for someone to find a puppy or kitten nearby. *shrug* Now we help other shelters place their animals. (transporting them to whatever town someone needs them to be in... eg: an elderly person wants a pet and can't get to the nearest shelter that actually has kittens, an hour or more away)
Anyway, I'm off topic... lol... Congrats on your new pig! they are fun critters. We have a large pig hutch built for them that lives in my daughters room. It is about 6 feet long, about 2 feet wide, and is on legs about 2 feet up off the floor (we store the shavings and food bin under it). Guinea pigs actually do not climb. They sometimes will sit on top of a cubby hole meant as a bed (we have two cubbies and an igloo in the hutch), but they would never climb out of a pen even if it is only 12 inches high. Unless of course something really scared them, a lot of people if they don't have other pets just let them run in an enclosed area on the floor and the sides of the enclosure don't need to be very high. With dogs and cats though, ours is wire covered on all sides and the top, with a wood frame, and linoleum tiles on the floor for easy cleaning. And yes we get the treehouse channel, but my kids are all older so none of them watch it anymore. Good luck building your cage.... |
Yep, our shelters are full of everything. So is the other pet rescue groups, and the shelters has 2 more pigs, both males. Hamsters, rabbits, birds, degu's, other types of mice and of course cats and dogs.
The new one I got is long haired, and desperately needed a bath. So I bathed her, and gave her a hair cut around the bum and belly, so she wouldn't get pee on herself. She also needed her nails trimmed. Right now they are in the kitchen gated off so they cannot get stuck anywhere. Enjoying grass, dandelions greens, lettuce and carrots and apples. They need to find it to eat it, but eventually they get around. Our gate has small holes so it's perfect for hanging the water bottle on it. It's too windy to let them outside today. My cats don't even care about them, and Remy is curious, but I keep her away from them. Thanks for your cage dimensions. I'm going to look into the cube crates, you can build a pen any size, and use a plastic box that is designed to fit under your bed as the base. We'll see, If this works then I don't need a lid, because they are kept off the floor for saftey sake. And like you said they don't climb. Funny story about Dancer and her haircut. I've been considering that for Remy, but I love the long coat. I like grooming her, and I love her in pig tails and bows. Bye for now, Bev |
