I'm about to shave the cats!

My husband adopted two long hair cats. I REALLY need recommendations on a grooming tool that will strip the under coat. If I can't find a way to curb the shedding, I'm going to have them shaved and buy little kitty coats for warmth. :twitch:

I shave my cat all the time using my andis clippers and my hand grabbing the back of their neck. The first few times were hell for both cat and me, but now she just sits there.

It cuts down on the shedding a LOT! The only time Mr. J complains about the hair is when I haven't shaved the cat in awhile. He knows b/c his nose gets stuffy.

After the first time, I never thought "shaving" would be possible because it was that terrible (her doing anything she could to escape, and it being the only time she's bit me) ...but I kept it up, and am glad I did!

There's also a NO SHED-X liquid stuff you can put on their food that helps. We only notice hair on the bed, and when it's time for another shave...
I would think you could use a light stripping comb similar to one that you might use for dogs. I have no idea though. I'm not a cat person. Check JB pet or Pet Edge, maybe they'll have something specifically for cats.
I always used a dog grooming rakeon my two persians and it worked great! I could never believe the amount of hair it sprung free. The cats loved it too.
Do IT DO IT!!!

Then send us pictures...mewww haa haaa haa
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And if you shave - wear a big glove . . .
We have a short hair cat that forgot to take care of his hair and got a lot of tangles/mattes. He also happens to be mean when it comes to brushing, he bites, draws blood. So we took him to the Vet where they sedated him and gave him a lion cut. Boy was he mad when we brought him home.
Our cat becomes more affectionate afterwards. At least that's how I look at it... Mr. J says she's just cold. :D Anyway, I really do like the Shed-X stuff!! I'm not even sure that's what it's called, but we had 4 cats in the house when we used it, and noticed a difference.
I have a 16 yr old short hair that sheds. The best and safest thing ( for me, he's mean ) that I've found is the glove with the nubby rubber palm. Not sure if this would work with the long hairs though????

I'm trying very hard not to shave the little lovlies. I told my husband, you change the box, brush them, and keep them off the furniture. So you ask, "how did that work out?". My husbands idea of weekly brushing is petting them while they sit on his lap, both on the new livingroom chair. There is a high side to all of this, Buff and Ellie keep their indoor herding skills polished by keeping the little buggers on their toes, with my encouragement of course.

Howdy back! I'm new to Utah, but grew up in Boulder Colorado, so the winters aren't too shocking. My husband grew up on the NY/Quebec border, so he thinks Utah winters are the sun belt. 8O
Sheesh, you guys are mean! There are a few cat lovers here too you know! 8O    :P

Seriously, my one cat Winston is a gigantic maine coon cross, long haired but not like a persian. He has never matted, I have never brushed him, ever, and he is always clean and looks great. He really is the world's perfect cat. He hardly sheds too.
Our short haired evil cat (who is inspiring me to think about having a dog with the registered name "Here Kitty Kitty!, call name Killer) doesn't shed either. We don't brush her either and she's never had a bath once in her whole life. I honestly don't know if I would survive trying to groom that cat so it's a good thing she doesn't need it LOL
My short-haired cat definitely sheds the most. She gets a bath every 4 months. Basically any time she's shaved to get rid of the extra hair and dander.
As I wandered through PetSmart today, I found a grooming tool that had a picture of a long hair cat sitting in a hugh pile of hair. The tool claims to eliminate most shedding, when used regularly. It looks like a stripping knife on steroids. It's called a "Furminator". I bought it with great hope. :?
The good news is the "Furminator" works really well. The bad news is, the husband doesn't. I brush the dogs, and don't have time for "his" cat. Hubby doesn't have the determination to work all the mats out of Beckers coat, so, we start over.

Buffett thinks we have a new cat and hasn't left Becker alone since he returned from the groomer last night. Buff even barked.

I am glad to see you did not shave the head or tail. My groomer did that once and my persian became so angry we never did again. I have found with my present cat that the udercoat rake is good, but I have to do in little stroke. Sort of like kitty licking. The cat loves it, but I think he perfers to rub his extra fur into all the throws.
