But also CHRISTINA WANTS TO GET HER OWN DOG! Yep! We could be adding another furry member to my already wild and crazy house! I'm afraid there is NO hope of adding another Sheepie (or beardie...nope) But she is seriously considering getting her own dog. She wants a "medium" sized dog, NOTHING over 45-50 lbs. So I'm opening it up to anyone who wants to bring some breed ideas to the table. We've already thought of a poodle (whatever is the size under the "standard"), a brittney spaniel, and an English springer. The dog must be good with sheepies, cats and a baby. Suggestions? |

Well, I think you are the sweetest for letting her!!!! What a fun house, and I'm surprised she's got time for a horse too!
Well, the most popular dogs while I was in college were beagles, fox terriers, boston terriers, and pugs. So the FT and P aren't "medium-sized" but they do tend to be popular. I don't like any of those breeds for myself, but they are easy to take care of and despite the loud bark and digging... beagles are favorites on all the popular breed polls I've seen. I'm sure the breeds I named are also popular b/c there are so many of them at pounds and aren't high maintenance. |
Mike suggested Beagles, but Christina HATES them! And she thinks pugs bark too much She doesn't like "yip yark" dogs... so most of the terriers I know are OUT.
She's picky But keep the ideas coming. |
Well it's good to hear she has good taste! Being picky is good
Sometimes going to the local pound will trigger ideas and breeds you didn't want initially? Or is she wanting to get a dog from a reputable breeder? Not decided? |
How about an English Setter? The bitches are smaller, of course, and average 45-55 lbs and are 23"-25" at the withers. I think they're lovely intelligent dogs.
Here's a link for some FAQs about the English setters. http://www.esaa.com/breedfaq.html |
Springer Spaniels are also popular! Or a plain ol cocker They're very loving dogs. |
My neighbor has an English Setter named Hank. He is very friendly and nice (to me...not Izzie), but that is because he is getting old and is a rescue from bad circumstances. He was found practically dead in a creekbed...or something like that. |
I do know she doesn't want to get a puppy (fine by me, been there done that!) So I think she's looking at a rescue. She's not a big cocker fan... so I hink their out. i do think she was considering an English Setter too. I've always thought they were really pretty dogs!
Anybody know if they're a "constant shedder"? My folks Cavalier spaniels are always shedding gigantic gobs of hair everywhere! I'm always surpirsed they have any hair left on their bodies! I'm SO spoiled with Pip |
aww...that's sweet of you guys to let her! Miniature poodles are a good choice. I had mini and toy poodles growing up, and they have a lot worse reputation for what they actually are. I had 3 at one time, and not any of them were ankle-biters or yappers. |
We had a cocker spaniel when my kids were little. He was a WONDERFUL dog, to this day I miss him. |
Is your sister staying at your place for a long time like until she's married or something? Just asking because she may also think about the size of the dog. A lot of places do not want someone to move in w/a dog above 25-35lbs, and the few places that do allow it may cost more or have a ridiculously high pet fee.
Can't wait to hear what she gets and pics of the new dog playing with Pippin! Probably won't see pics of the new dog and the cats right away though |
You are such a nice sister! |
I need to put the plug in for the Brittany. I grew up with them and they are nice dogs. Good size, medium shedder, friendly and happy. No yappy bark.
My parents used to be the rescue contacts in MN. I'm not sure who is now. ( My dad died of cancer and my mom moved near my sister in KS). I have a one as a student in my classes right now - she is a sweetie and a very nice looking pup. Also to consider: sheltie, boston terrier, corgi, and of course a basset hound! |
My brother has a brittany, very nice dog. |
what about a golden retriever...they are such good dogs...also what about a briard? I love them too! |
I've met several Briards that didn't get along w/cats ..not to mention, they're just a pound or two over medium-sized. |
hahahahaha. I was thinking just that!!! Goldens are a BIG dog as well!!!
How about a Tibetin Terrier (sp?), I saw one on an animal planet show and it was really cute. |
If she might consider a golden, check out RAGOM (retrieve a golden of MN). They have a great web site, and also sometimes have smaller golden mixes. I know several people who have adopted from them and they do a good job. I think it is www.ragom.org
Also our basset rescue website - www.bbrescue.org - serving MN, WI and No. IL. Bassets and basset mixes. |
Where are those dog breed websites...fill in the questions and out pops breeds...... |
Right here:
http://animal.discovery.com/breedselect ... elector.do It's a fun quiz to do. |
That's interesting. I've never taken that quiz. OES are a 98% match, though, to my preferences, so I guess I have the right breed. |
Thanks for the suggestions and websites guys! I'm passing them all along.
I figure it'll be good for Pip to have a friend at home to play with. He just LOVES other dogs... even the neighbors standoffish Akita She's planning on staying with us for at least a few more years. Which is great, cause then I have built in help with the housework!!! |

I just took it & my top 5 were Sheltie (100%) American Cocker Spaniel (this one and the 3 below are 99%) English Cocker Spaniel English Setter English Springer Spaniel a lab got 97% and an OES got 94%. |
How about my favourite little dog.. the Border Terrier""or a Bedlington Terrier.. they are sooooooooo cute...
or did you say no terriers... Or how about a Porteguese Water Dog.. http://animal.discovery.com/breedselect ... do?id=2480 |
How about a Border Collie? My darling Keira (see picture to left...the not sheepie dog) is the biggest, most loving sweetheart! She's about 50 pounds, but doesn't look it. Very enthusiastic about life! But not crazy hyper like a terrier. Just loves to play and work... She totally adores her big brother Pirate (OES) and her other older brothers the 2 cats. Just a thought! |

I say ..go to your local shelter/pound and see what happens!! There may be an older dog (out of puppy stage) that just seems right!!! I have a friend that got two that way. Her husband won't let us go to the local animal shelter together any more |
We have a sheltie next door that is absolutely adorable! They have a border collie too that is hyper but fun. He plays with Brees through the fence - they chase each other back & forth along the fence line. |
Well...
It sounds like she's thinking of going the boxer route. So who knows something about boxers??? |
They fart a lot. hth |
My Aunt has a Boxer and she ADORES it. It is her new baby since her kids are out of the house now...in fact when my cousins were little their parents always told them my uncle was allergic to dogs and that is why they couldn't have one. He's not...my aunt just didn't want to raise kids and a dog all at the same time Now they ask why Remy is on the family christmas card and they aren't |
