Eats dirt and rocks

Does anybody know why my Puppy wants to eat dirt and rocks

I'd be interested in knowing too. Miss Ellie has been a ground grazer her entire 4 years. Mostly dirt and while walking on the leash. :?
quess it's a doggie thing Duchess loves stones and shrubs :D
So glad to hear I'm not the only one having that problem! My little Bowie ( nine weeks old - well, almost 10 weeks now!) puts everything and anything in his mouth. When we go out for potty, he sniffs the ground like he's going to go, does a little peep and grabs a bite of lawn, dirt, whatever on the sneak...

I've been trying to discourage it with a stern voiced "leave it" and a treat when he either drops it or walks away. He eats the leash too but some bitter apple on the leash is taking care of that..

Would love to hear any and all recommendations myself!

I can honestly say that Obe does/did the exact same thing. When he was a young puppy 3 & 4 months he ate dirt, rocks, and loved flowers. He is now almost 6 months and this has stopped quite a bit, but every now again I will catch him. He has graduated to sticks now. Guess that is better than rocks or dirt. I think Obe liked the rocks more when his teeth were coming in. Now if it is something that I dont want him to have I can say drop it and he will, even though this took some time.
Is this happening outside, or in the house? We were mystified by both our dogs and our cat wanting to eat dirt from the house-plants until it dawned on us that the soil/fertilizer that we used had fish meal in it!
This is all outside, if he figures out how to get to my hanging plants I'm in a world of hurt. Really he never ate the dirt in the flowers he would just walk by a wild flower for instance and bite the flower off never breaking stride. But like I said he used to love rocks and I think it somehow made his gums feel better while teething (could be wrong just guessing). Ever once in a while now he will get to playing/eating the dirt. I cant remember the last time he chewed on rocks. How old are your animals?
the ones who ate dirt  were all adults. Our new pup Bert (8 mo.s old) hasn't had the oportunity to, since we now keep all our houseplants either out of reach, or with the dirt covered so they cant get at it! Way, way too much snow on the ground in our yard to know yet whether he'd do so outside! Dont even get me started on his ice-chunk addiction though!!! :?
When Bailey was less than a year old, he was really into eating dirt and gravel. That habit seems to have gone away now - at least, we don't see many stones coming out the other end :) I guess it was just a puppy thing.
My dog seems to really want dirt when she is running around. She won't eat it on a walk, but if she is rough housing at the park, she'll grab a big mouthful like it's going to refresh her some how. I usually take it as a sign she's thirsty, but I still think it's weird.
I'm convinced they are part goat in sheepdog's clothing!!!!!
Eats dirt, flowers, roots, sticks, shoes, cell phones, stuffies....

In my opinion , it's a puppy thing.
If someone figures out why puppies eat dirt and love dirt, please let me know too! We took a tree down and a pile of dirt was left...first thing our pup did was dive in head first and roll...then came up with face of dirt!

Rocks I worry about...what if can't pass it?
