Is there any particular Nutro I should get? |
|
Nutro Ultra. It's the most holistic of the foods that they offer. Clyde and Bear do great on it. |
I like Nutro Ultra but I am not sure it is good for a dog experiencing food allergies. If it is truly a food allergy, I thought the recommendation was to choose a single protein dog food so that you eliminate the meat or grain that is causing the reaction. When my cat developed allergies, I had to find her a food that contained a protein she hadn't had before because it was likely that any familiar foods would generate the reaction. So there are various "allergy" foods out there that have unusual proteins as the base (fish, venison, duck, bison, etc.)
As it happens, I've been feeding Chummie grain-free foods because that's supposed to help her arthritis and she really likes the "allergy" formulas of Dick van Pattens Natural Balance. These are single protein foods and grain-free. You might want to check out the current issue of Whole Dog Journal because they have just updated their list of top quality dog foods. (Both Nutro Ultra and Natural Balance are on the list.) I have also read that feeding dogs a variety of proteins might help reduce the chances that a dog develops allergies in the first place. |
All our dogs are infected with Cheyletiellosis (Walking Dandruff Mite). We just found out the other day. Just mentioning it in case these mites are getting around.
Signs are a lot of itching & scratching, almost like you have fleas with no flea dirt or fleas. Some other signs are dander & some more than usual hair loss. All the dogs are now being treated with "Revolution" which should kill the mites. Walking Dandruff is uncommon but is highly contagious in dogs, cats & rabbits. We have no idea how the dogs got infected, but Haggis is hypersensitive to the mite and is suffering a lot. Hopefully we'll have some relief in the next day or so. I really thought that all of the itching & scratching was from winter dryness although it has been a bit excessive. We were putting oil in their food thinking that was going to help but it never did. A vet can diagnose this by taking a scraping of the skin and putting it under a microscope. The mites are easily detectable. Also, the itching seems a lot worse at night after dinner time for all of the dogs for some reason if that has anything to do with the little buggers. p.s. I'm trying not to be totally skeeved & I am really hoping I did not infect 4DogNight's dogs as we had a play date last weekend!! |
Deb -- that sounds horrible! Poor doggies. Poor little Haggis! I am glad to know about it though, just in case, good to be aware.
Did I read correctly that you had a playdate? I didn't see any pictures?? |

Yes, actually, I helped groom Guiness down at 4dognight's house and the sheepdogs got to run around together. I didn't take any photos but her husband did. I just hope her dogs don't get this, I never in a million years would have guessed it was a mite causing all of the itching. They also predominantly scratch on their flanks, rear & head where these little guys like to hang out too. |
Now I feel itchy
At least it sounds reasonably easily treated.... |
Tell us what you decide on, and if it works!!! I am always listening! Natural Balance worked out TERRIBLE For Yuki (worst food out of all the ones we tried), BUT if you look at the ingredients and the grade your dog food, everything about it was wonderful! Willowsprite once noted that the brand could have been too RICH for my dog. I hope you find something that works! |
I've tried a ton of different foods and so far I still maintain the one they did best on was Iams, which isn't really a very good quality food anymore. Definitely not for a dog with allergies though as it is a lot of corn.
Wellness makes some great quality foods, but my dogs barfed it up, it didn't agree with them at all. Nutro gave them all diarrhea and they barfed that up too. You could try the Pro Plan sensitive Skin and stomach, it has ideal ingredients for dogs with allergies. Salmon, oatmeal based... no wheat, no corn, only one protein source. My dogs are currently on Pro Plan puppy chicken and rice, but I think it's crap. In April I will be gradually switching them to something else... I'm just not sure what yet. My dogs don't have allergy issues though so I'm looking for a food based on different reasons. |
Wynette I just read you post . I don't know if anyone has ever tried 'Eagle pack' it is hard to find . Here is the web site http://www.eaglepack.com/.
They tell about the food and can tell you where to find it. The site will also ask you questions about you dog and recommend what kind to feed for what allergy. I have been feeding Eagle for over 10 years .I started with my Danes years ago due to severe allergy and skin problems. I got to say I have tried all the foods out there and have never found one better than eagle (In my opion). I now feed the gold bag : Holistic Select® Chicken Meal & Rice Formula 24% Protein / 15% Fat Harley loves it and is doing great. Good luck...... Antoinette |
Sorry to jump of topic for a second but Joahaeyo I love your new pictures!!!!!
So cute............ Antoinette |
Just looked at the eagle pack site, it was one of the foods I was considering, but the ingredient list actually looks horrible.,.. so that's out LOL |
I've Been watching this discussion with a lot of interest, since we are also looking for a new food to switch to. Weve fed our dogs Science Diet for many years, but have been hearing recently that they are no longer a good choice...can anyone post a list of ingredients we should/shouldent be looking for when evaluating a dog food? Is there a basic standard, or does it depend on the individual dogs history??? |
We started giving Hill's Prescription food to Panda last week... it's their z/d Ultra formula.
http://www.hillspet.com/zSkin_2/product ... 9330736437 Then winter finally arrived and the itching has greatly diminished so it looks like we're still dealing with an environmental allergy found outdoors Unless it was the Prescription c/d food she was on for struvite crystals that was causing the problem?? Poochie allergies are making me nuts! It's a trial and error type thing. Jaci |
Willowsprite are you talking about the Anchovy, Sardine & Salmon ect....... LOL
I can tell you that there is no bad smell If that is what you were thinking...... Antoinette |
No, I meant all the corn. It seems the food is mostly corn... I dunno, I'm still looking into it.
I've called around and not a single store within an hour from me carries it anyway. One is willing to order it in if I want, but I'm not sure yet. Seems like a lot of hassle and if they don't carry it on a regular basis I'd hate to be caught low and then them not be able to get any in on time. *sigh* I guess that's part of the price for living in a small town.... |
Oh the corn. I thought they had one kind that had no corn but I cant remember.
Yea , I know what you mean about trying to find a store that has it. When we moved from Fl. to TN I did not know where I was going to get it. I was so happy to find that a store a few miles away from us carries it here in TN. Good luck in you venture, I know how hard it is to find our fur-kids the perfect food for them. Antoinette |
I do a swap between Eagle Pack Holoisitic when I can get it here and now available here is Dick van Pattens Natural Balance.
Both are fantastic and swapping between brands every so often lessens the chances of developing food allergies. Lots of information on that now in relation to swapping on occassions. Mine don't have any problems with food allergies but I have always tried to feed a Holisitic Dry or a Dry that contains no Beef, corn, wheat etc. If you suspect a food allergy then one of the fish and potato or duck and potato blends to start with for a period of time, as no grains in them and if the allergies settle down then you can start and introduce more variety then to find out what the trigger food is down the track to avoid in the future. |
The vet did some a skin scrap on London and we haven't gotten the results back. He was leaning more towards either a food allergy (we were feeding IAMS large breed) or possibly just extremely dry and flaky skin (so I went and purchase oatmeal shampoo to bathe her in). I went and picked up a 20 lb bag of the Nutro Ultra (that will last us 2 maybe 3 days with the 3 of them) to try them on and will be watching them to see how they react. |
Samantha came to us eating Nutro Lamb and Rice formula (ironically, the package with the sheepie on it). I have bought a few cans of the holistic Nutro food, but haven't tried the dry kibble. |

Wynn you can add some Omega Oils to her diet to help the Skin, a good one is cold pressed Flax Seed Oil, 1/2 tsp over her food once a day, helps the skin and coat, stops the dryness and skin flakes. |
