It snowed a couple of inches here yesterday and Tucker (9 months old) was completely ecstatic! When we first got him there was still a lot of snow on the ground (March) and he would surprise himself by sniffing along the snow until a snowball grew and rolled away from his nose -- and then he'd chase it... Well, he's still doing it! He keeps wondering where these little snowballs are coming from! We were walking down the street this morning (no sidewalks) and I let him walk where a bit of snow had piled up. Next thing I know he's rolling around in it! Hopefully, the local dog park does not close during the winter! I can't wait till we have a few feet and he can frolic in it! Just wanted to share... Suzanne |

Your story made my day! There is nothing more fun than watching a sheepie in the snow for the first time! Just wait until you get a few feet and Tucker starts making like a snow plow and leaving nothing but flurries of snow in his wake! It is the most glorious site in the world to see a sheepie running through the snow - probably the only real reason I look forward to the first snowfall!
Thanks for the smiles! Guinevere's Dad, Kevin Z. |
Hi Kevin!
We went for a long walk this morning and he was still just as ecstatic! I didn't have the heart to put him in a heel position (unless it was absolutely necessary)! It was as if each flake of snow had its own smell and he had to sniff every single one of them. I was going to bring him to the dog park this afternoon -- but the temp actually went up to 10C (around 50F) and the streets are now bare. I'm sure the dog park is just pure mud right now! I love your picture of Guinny -- she's absolutely gorgeous! I've forgotten -- how old is she?? Suzanne |
After an early snow, Jake used to hang his tongue out of his mouth and run around dragging his tongue in the snow!!!
Did I mention he also loves to chew ice cubes? -Ron. |
And they have such big tongues too!
Tucker LOVES ice cubes too! Suzanne |
Suzanne -
Thank you! It is my favorite picture of Guinney - well, next to the one we put on the Christmas cards last year where she was wearing a Hawiian shirt! Guinevere was a year and a half old as of Oct 20. She is our 3rd sheepie in 18 years. I love your stories! Keep them coming! Cheers! Guinevere's Dad, Kevin Z. |
An OES in a Hawaiin shirt?? Do you have this picture online somewhere?? I'd love to see it!
I remember reading about the snow between the paws and I was actually able to give the paw hair a really good clipping on Saturday. I don't know if you know/remember from the list but I had a really bad experience with a groomer and I've been grooming Tucker on my own (his hair had gotten out of hand and I was having trouble with him staying still for a brushing). Well, wouldn't you know it, I spent an hour grooming him on Saturday and he was almost falling asleep by the end of it! What a difference from a few months ago! I took him for a long walk beforehand and had one of my daughters feed him by hand while I was grooming... I'm learning, I'm learning... I love that you love my stories!! You have to give us some about Guinevere! Suzanne |

It definately sounds like you are getting this grooming thing down very well! And anyone who told you that grooming a sheepie is an easy task...lied! But you are definately on the right track when you tire him out first and maybe just do one side and take a break, then do the other a bit later. I love the hand feeding thing too! That is great! Distraction is definately a good thing! Another thing that has worked with Guinney is that from the time she was a 4 month old puppy I would take her paws while she was laying down next to me (which is where she usually laid!) and just gently pet them so that she would get used to it when it came time to brush them. That has worked out very well. Unfortunately, I do not have the picture of Guinevere in the Hawiian shirt on the web, but there are some pictures from her first birthday at: http://www.corp-reflection.com/OES-L/dogz/zimmerman_k/ Cheers! Hi Kevin!
I do that petting the paw thing too -- but he knows when I've got the scissors in my hands! (Tucker just looked up at me -- he's taking a nap -- don't you just love bed-head on a sheepie??) Guinevere is so absolutely adorable! Now, it looks like you don't trim the hair around her eyes at all -- am I wrong? We tried that for awhile with Tucker but we really couldn't see his eyes and we figured he couldn't see much either. He's got such beautiful brown eyes. Also, his hair seems to be very thick, while Guinney's hair seems to very silky (that's what I see in the pictures). Any comments/advice on that? Suzanne |

Suzanne - I have tried trimming the hair around Guinney's eyes, and still do on occasion. I've also tried tieing it up with one of my wife's pony tail "thingies" but she doesn't like that very well. She also has very beautiful golden/brown eyes. I think that she sees fine, but I do think she looks good with the hair in her eyes, so for the most part that is the way it stays. I think every sheepie's coat is a bit different, and my last, Merlin, had very thick hair and thick undercoat., so it was quite a challenge to keep the matts away. Guinney, on the other hand, has thinner hair on most of her, though the hair on her back just past her neck is getting very thick. So I brush her about once a week, and anytime I find any matts so that the job doesn't get overwhelming. Tucker sure looks beautiful from his picture! And I think his hair looks very silky as well. Cheers. Guinevere's Dad, Kevin Z. |
