It's hard to figure out that chin, isn't it. I tried all of those things too and it was actually a poster here that helped me. I change their water constantly. Chins are white now. It is amazing to me how much cleaner it stays. The other thing was a really good brush and to make sure I did it everyday.
It took me forever to figure out the avatar picture. My main problem was getting the picture smaller. You can download Adobe photo shop for free and it helped us. I am hoping to get smart enough to figure out how to put in the big pictures. LOL Good luck, Stormi and co. (Mikey G, you gave me that great advice, if you see this, how are you and Woof these days?) |
cajaga and all,
Dirty chins and beards are a never ending battle and one that I at least am generally happy to fight to a stalemate Winning, especially with Martin (Mr. Water Boy) is out of the question! After all the recommendations of peroxide, lemon juice , wipes etc., are said and done, one of the things I have done is to hang a "dribble towel" in a standard bathroom towel ring right above the dogs' diner tables. Since we don't let our boys free feed or free drink we are always with them when they drink. As soon as they have had their drink Martin and Virgil are called to "dry beard" at which point they (sometimes reluctantly) come to me and I dry their beard on the always accessible towel. I also ask for a kiss when they are done and get one - it is now a well established routine!! While this doesn't get their beards totally dry it does remove most of the "free" water and substantially reduces the the staining and smell in their beards. This is a new "thing" that I didn't have to do with Punk but was essential from the day Martin arrived home at 4 months and carried over to Virgil. Martin is very "wet mouthed" for an OES and just loves his water, maybe as much as he loves his Daddy!! Anyway a simple suggestion that I have found to be of substantial benefit. Carl |
What has helped me with Max is having the groomer keep his chin hair very short. If I grow it long its gets very dirty and matted. Max's isn't white but it seems to help. |
I tried the peroxide/mom mix with great sucess. The hard part is putting it on. I put it on at night and in the morning wash it off. It did not appear to dry out her hair either.
Now if only I could use it to get the blood off above her eye.......The stain is growing out and looks awful! She will just have to stay looking like I hit her for a little longer. She is a slider and crashed into the door! |
As you can easily see, I got the same trouble with my two OES, specially with Nina, the one in the picture. I tried everything so far, but no progress... If there is any other suggestion, it will be appreciated... thanx |
Everyone should have Edy's website in their favorite file. In addition to the milk of mag and hydrogen peroxide formula, she has listed several other white chin preparations. http://www.atlantic.net/~bizzboots |
Hello all, esp Stormi & Co!
Woof's doing v.well - he's now a very healthy and HUGE 2 years old. But back to the beard question - we still use the same old same old - No magic formulae, just changing his water frequently (and towelling his beard dry if he has a particularly long drink) works wonders...... http://groups.msn.com/MJPix/pets.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=102 |
What a gorgeous picture! A magnificent beast.
(Welcome back! Nice to see you around.) |
Hi-
As far as changing water to keep a white chin- how often is often? Are we talking once a day, twice, more than that? Just curious. Karen |
I probably change his water three or four times a day - or any time i see it's not clean and fresh. he's got a very big, deep bowl, and basically soaks his beard every time he drinks - obviously this washes it, but the trade off is my kitchen floor gets a regular soaking unless I'm on hand with a towel...... |
MIKEYG and WOOF!
It is great to see you. The picture of Woof is great, he is such a beautiful boy. Yes, we still follow your advice on Jack and Annabelle, and it works better than anything else does. Unless they decide to go eat mud and then it might take an extra washing for that. Stormi and co. |
Some of Woof's pictures are the best I've seen. I especially loved the one with him in the field of orange (or bright yellow) blossoms from a while ago. (That was Woof right???)
I hope you post more pictures soon! Kristen |
Yes, it was Woof at about 8 months - I HAVE to find the time to upload some new pix....
Cheers |
Burcwen is a pet, so I do not have to worry about show standards. My last sheepie, Bailey, did not suffer much from wetbeard, and so I did not have to worry about her really. Burcwen, however, had the worst wetbeard I have ever seen. I kept washing and brushing, changing water, and everything else, but it was to no avail. She could soak anything she got close to for about 15 minutes after drinking; it was like having a wild mop randomly running around your house. Of course, I would always be reading books, and she would come running up for attention, and no matter how quick I moved she would always manage to leave a sopping beak print on my book, thus ruining a couple pages!
Finally I found that the only answer was severe shaving. I have a beard trimmer and I put only a #1 blade on it so that the shave is very close, and then I just buzz her chin. I usually do this about 2-3 times a month. The fluffiness from the rest of her beak covers it up well enough to the eyes of anyone but a real sheepie judge (my avatar, for example, contains a buzzed burcwen), and so she continues to look great and no longer has the wetbeard problem. |
