eye colour

We were at the dog park the other day with Truman. A lady was asking me questions about our sheepie and she said she had heard that Old English Sheepdogs that have blue eyes have a high chance of going blind????? We don't have another vet appt. in the near future so I was wondering if any of you have heard this or if this is just a myth.

No, dogs having blue eyes do not have risks of going blind. Blue eyes are very common in the breed as well as having 2 dark brown eyes or one blue eye & one brown eye (wall eye).
i have a blue eyed sheepie and i can tell you that she is not blind nor anywhere near going blind, however, it is amazing that sooo many people at the dog park have commented that they thought it was amazing how well a blind dog runs and plays :? .....

Ha! Oh, that made me chuckle :D
Blind dogs do get around amazingly well and I never dreamed they would run at full speed too once they map the area out in their head. I do have a blue eyed OES that is blind but it has nothing to do with eye color. She was simply born this way.

Maybe this person got it confused with white head/blue eyed sheepies having a higher chance of being born deaf.

I think this goes back to some breeds have a predisposition to blindness if two blue eyed dogs are bred such as Austrialian sheps for example.

Blue eyed people/dogs do have more of a tendency to sunburn ,however. I once read that in some genetics article as it mentioned it wasn't the hair color that was the indicator of sensitivity to the sun but the eye color. Some dogs brown or blue eyed ones have pink pigmentation around the eyes and that would be more prone to sunburn too..but not blindness.

Marianne and the boys
Murphy 1 blue&1brown, Bella 2blue, Elliott 2blue. None are blind, But people on the street come up and ask me if they are.
There is a correlation between white headed dogs with blue eyes and deafness, but is not associated with vision problems.
I suppose if there was a degree of albinism it might be an issue.
With three in full coat and no top knots people want to know if mine even have eyes. 8O
I was told the same thing when I first got Obe. This guy mentioned what a beautiful dog then saw his eyes and said you know they have a greater chance of going blind with blue eyes, or one in his case. I went to the vet and he said no the gentleman knew nothing about the breed.
