NOT THE MATS!!!!

Ok so we go to Oregon and on our way back to Arizona my back goes out. So I wasn't brushing Edgar as much as I usually do. Then all of a sudden one day I am petting him and hes fine and the next day I pet him he has some small matted pieces on his sides and legs. So I start beating myself up for being a horrid dog owner and he gets all the mats brushed out and gets real close going overs from me every day.

Well he is still getting them in the same places. I don't get it. I mean it doesnt seem like he is changing his coat. It seems like it is described as mats over the entire body not just in sections. And the mats arent close to his skin either.

Could it be happening that just a few sections of him are changing? Or is it just him maybe rubbing his sides against his crate when he sleeps at night and knotting his side? Though that wouldnt explain how he got his mats between his legs. :?

I'm afraid it's normal for his age. No matter how much you think you're on top of them, the mat fairies are faster than you. He is around the age for coat changes so it's a very tough time to keep them away.
Ha Ha Ha I like that the "Matt Fairies" darn pesty things they are  .
yes, that is normal...no sense in beating yourself up over it...id just take a small pair of scissors and cut the knots out....unless you can get him to lay there while you work the knots out.......

tell edgar that panda says hi!
Bing does it, too. His coat will do it in one area for a while and then switch. I'm not sure how the weather is in your area, but in FL we need to keep him on Frontline all the time and THAT is a killer for his coat. I was brushing out new matts every day in the same place for almost a week!
So I thought I had all the mats out and gave him a bath today. After he dries and I pet him I about have an heart attack. They popped up every where again. So tonight while hubby watching TV I comb out all the little stinker mat fairies. GRRRRR.

So he looks beautiful and poofy and all is well until I look at his ears...... The tips of his ears...... I wanted to SCREAM!!!! So he has mats there to and I'm not sure what to do for those. Would maybe some spray in conditioner help me get rid of them when i try to comb them?

I be thinking that in Edgars near future he will be NAKED!   I keep telling him that he will be ugly and no one will think he is cute any more and that i will laugh at him. He just pants at me and has the look of "I AM THE STUDLIEST AND MOST COOL DOG EVER. NOTHING CAN PHASE ME!"
I feel for you, I really do. The coat change sucks...
Since you aren't showing him, you could condition his coat and that'll help with the matting a little. Get a good, light spray, like The Stuff, and use it as you line brush. I find if the coat is conditioned, it's easier to work out the mats that do form and keeps them from getting as tight when they do happen. Always brush with a light mist so it doesn't break coat and cause more mats.
So I got THE STUFF and a mat breaker. Wow!!!! His ear mats are gone. AND............I had so much fun using the dematter!!!!!!!!! I don't want him to get mats again but I can barely wait until I have to use it some more.
