Hot Spots

Denver has come up with a 4 inch circular Hot Spot on his side. The Groomer shaved it close and suggest "Ting" antifungal spray to clear it up. Want to double check to see if this is the best remedy and any suggestions to deter him from licking it. Also, is there a cause for hot spots?

I would get it checked by the vet in case it's not hotspots. It could be ringworm.
Hot spots can be allergy related, say from a flea bite or even food.

Lot's of information on this forum on Hot Spots, so if you google, in the box at the top "Hot Spots" it will bring up a ton of reading on them. 8O

Some good ideas there from people that have had the problem.

Best wishes and I hope it settles down for Denver. :D
I agree with willowsprite...have the Vet look at it. Ringworm can look like a hot spot. Perfect circle with tiny red coloring that are actually little bumps. And ringworm can be caught by human so get it checked. And washed your hands alot! Also, if it is ringworm, babies and small children are more suseptible to catching it. Ringworm easily so no biggy.

Good luck.
My chocolate lab Macy has had hotspots several times in her life. There are MANY ways to treat this.
Ringworm is actually fungal, so that may be the reason for the treatment your vet suggested?
True hotspots are cleared up with antibiotics either oral or topical. Our vet treats with oral cephalexin and using antibiotic ointment on the spot until it heals over. There are many other ways to treat that work also. This one works for us, so I've never tried any other tx.
Just recently Max had a hotspot from fleas. We treated the fleas and it has since completely cleared up. I also have 3 cats and they also had to be treated for fleas.

Poor Denver! Based on my experience with Chum, hotspots can be very painful. She got one shortly after I adopted her but hasn't had one since. Hopefully, this is just a one time thing for Denver.
Thanks for the response. I am trying the "Ting" over this weekend and I am seeing some improvement. It appears to be drying it up if I can keep him from licking. Poor Denver though, has a big shaved patch on his side. Glad his hair grows fast. I plan to have Denver see the vet if it does not continue to improve. I am familiar with ringworm, had it myself 40 years ago when I was 6 years old. We lived on a farm. Not something you generally tell everyone, but, those who grew up on a farm are well aware of the interesting "things" that are picked up.
Pop a T-shirt on him, to help stop him licking the area and aggrivating it more.
Just wanted to submit a follow up. The "Ting" spray worked wonderfully! Entire hot spot area was cleared up within 5 days. Has a small bald patch but I am sure will grow back in quickly.
Yay Denver! That's great. I've never heard of Ting but I am really glad to know of something that worked so quickly. Now, don't be surprised when the injured bald patch grows in with black fur. . .
Good news, glad it cleared up on Denver. As val said, the hair there will probably grow back darker on that bald patch because of the trauma to the skin.
