Moving To Cali

Ok.. so my original plan was to go to OR, but hubby really wants to go to California. We won't be moving until probably around November, but I want to get a good idea of what it's like there. I am not a huge fan of driving in bumper to bumper traffic everyday, but I would like to be close enought to shops and fun things to do that I don't have to drive a zillion miles to get there.

Are there a lot of dog parks and the like there. What about schools? I would really like to participate as much as possible in my children's education, ( I thought and am still thinking of homeschooling) so how are the schools there? Sorry for talking so much, I just have never been and was wondering about all this stuff. ( what about crime???)

Ok.. I'll let you guys take it from here!

Nic :)

Where in California are you looking to move to?
Um, california is like HUGE!!!

You can either be in a really rural, really urban or really suburban area. Southern California is totally different than Northern California (they could practically be separate states). The weather is completely different in the south than the north, or inland versus coastal. California is a lot more expensive than other places...for example,San Diego's median house price is around $500,000...and it doesn't have higher salaries to back those prices.

That said, how exciting!! I'm from CA, so you can PM if you need any info about southern california particularly. Oh, and people from there don't call it Cali! 8)
My hubby is from the Los Angeles area. We have lived in Orange County and now the Desert. If you need info about Southern California let me know. 8)
Yeah, I figured that Cali wasn't exactly proper, but I didn't feel like typing out California.

I also know what you mean about it being huge. I'm up here in Alaska, the difference is that when people ask about where to live here, we don' have that many different places to go. There are a lot of little towns out in the bush, but I'm not sure how many folks want to brave the honey buckets. (looking for a sick face.) Those are buckets that everyone ahem.. potty on and they take it out once a day. yuck!

I guess I just forgot how much there is to do there. And as far as where?? Umm Central California seems nice, (although I wouldn't mind an ocean view. A girl can dream right? :) :) ) I think somewhere in the central region would be nice. And we do want a little land(1-5 acres) for our kids and sheepie to roam in.

Any good spots?!

L.L. Cool J does...

I think the first thing you should think about is how much you can afford to spend and what kind of job opportunities are available to you and choose an area accordingly.
If you go to "THENEST.COM"
Then go to "TALK" (section on top/it's a tab).
Then hit "LOCAL BOARDS" (found around the middle of the page)

you can do searches by local areas. Breaks it down to each major city, but since CA is huge, it's broken down to the parts of CA.

Anyway, the boards there are designed to ask "where is the best place to shop, get hair done, schools, take my pets, bring my baby, etc."

The website is on tv all the time. It's where people go after they are married (newlyweds), and discuss their new lives and help adjusting to moving to a new area.

Maybe that can offer some help?
Would your husband be doing the same thing there? :) sounds exciting!

When are you guys getting a dang dog? I've been hearing about it forever!
Thanks guys! You are all being really helpful! I will definitely go to those sites you guys recommended, I love to hear all the opinions about where to go! And I thought all you sheepie lovers whould have some great ideas as well!

Leanne, I should be getting him at the end of this coming week or the middle of the next. ( Dang taxes! We need those to come in!   ) Hubby sure made this hard didn't he?! Oh well, we are almose back on track and will be early next week. Man! I shouldn't have let him go on vacation first should I?!

But anyway.. don't worry. Yuki will be playing with a new friend before the end of the week after next. :D :D :D

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Well, what kind of weather are you hoping for? That could also help you with where you want to live. If you live in the northern part of the state towards the coast, it is much cooler and foggier and wetter than the southern part. When you go inland, it can get HOT. The middle part of the state (lengthwise) is where a lot of the farming is done, so there is more open land and is less expensive to live there (generally speaking). But it will also be a lot more barren and probably not what you think of when you think of California.
I miss living there, so I'm all ready to talk and talk and talk about it! :D
