I have an Oster Golden A5 Single Speed and I love it. Never tried the Andis.
Welcome to the forum! |
I got an Oster because this site recommended it. It feels too strong for me, and I feel like I have more control with my Andis. However, I just use mine for small trims, paws, and face ...not massive lengths. I think most people say the Oster according to reviews. |
I have the the Oster A5 single speed and the Oster A5 turbo, both are great.
I have the tiny Andis battery operated clipper, I use it for feet. I can't really compare as the Andis and the Oster that I have are 2 totally different clippers. The trick with the clippers is the keep them well lubricated. |
I have both an oster and an adis and I prefer the Andis. It's quieter and just seems to do a better job. The Andis heats up faster though, but as long as I keep a can of coolant handy it's not a problem. |
my andis heats up super fast too. |
So does my Oster.. |
Define super fast please? |
My Andis gets too hot within 20 minutes if I don't hose it down with coolant.
If I spray it every 15 mins or so though I can shave a whole dog with only one break maybe (for coffee of course) |
I have the Andis AGC two speed model which is equivilant to the Oster A5.
The blades are interchangeable with the blades for the A5. I use the Andis blades however, since they came with the clippers. I am very happy with them. I do keep a bottle of Andis Cool Care on hand to spray the blades and keep them cool, so I can shave the dogs down in one sitting. |
Definately ANDIS AGC
I have a set of Oster that I use for fine trimming but prefer the Andis. |
I have the Oster A5 2speed, and I really like it. I had a
Wahl but I really was not happy with that, that was a few years ago. My oster gets really hot really fast. I have to stop or dip the blade at least every 10 minutes, especially if I am trimming close to the skin. I am thinking of getting some of the better blades. They claim to stay %70 cooler. I think I saw titanium and ceramic blades - anyone have any comments on them? Shellie |

After trying many other brands and talking with area groomers, I settled on Andis and couldn't be happier. I have the Andis#21420 Pro Animal, 7 piece (that number seems to be replaced with #21485). It is 1 speed, which seems to be fine for me...does not get hot. It comes with a #10 detachable (snaps on/off) blade and I purchased a #3 skip-tooth. I paid $120 for the clipper at a local farm/home store, but found there is a lot of difference in price. Online I saw them from $116 to $160, same style.
The thing I learned from local groomers who use both the Oster and the Andis is the Andis has more rpm's per minute so it stays cooler longer, it lighter weight, and doesn't require adjusting. Also the Andis.com site says the ceramic blades stay 75% cooler and Andis blades are interchangeable with Oster. For information only, see: http://www.andis.com/USA/products.asp? Must be purchased through retail store/site. |
yep the Andis AGC is the one much easier to maintain ad stays a lot cooler with an enclosed motor, they are more powerful, weigh less and smaller this is largly due to the Andis AGC having newer electronics compared to the Oster A5 however there is a new Oster clipper called the PowerMax which i have not tried yet but i am assured they are better than the AGC but they all take the same design in blades and can be interchanged. try looking at http://www.angliaclipperservices.com/40040/info.php?p=7&pno=0 |
I think mine is the Andis AGP 2 speed. I'm pleased, but like Stacey and others have mentioned, those blades get hot quickly. I alternate between 2 or 3 blades while working, using spray coolant and a cleaner bath often. Originally I had the Osters, first a one speed and then a 2 speed. I don't like they way they feel in my aging hads. Both are still working, the 1 speed is reeeeaaaalllly slow and will either get rebuilt or tossed. The 2 speed got dropped and a corner of the casing cracked off. It was noisey before, now it is really so, but a good back up when I feel the Andis needs a break. |
Just a word of warning about the Oster PowerMax. No parts are available. Should something go wrong with them you'll need to purchase a new clipper. Personally I feel that they want a lot of money for a clipper that is disposable. The blades get hot on an Andis clipper due to the motor RPM's. The heat that comes off of the blade when attached to a Laube high speed clipper can be dangerous at times. Richard Southern Sharpeners |
Richard, what are your recommendations for clippers that don't heat up so quickly? |
Hello Susan, I recommend the Andis AG or AGC model with the black housing. The RPM's on this clipper are slower than the red, blue or silver models. It is also cheaper than the other models. Richard Southern Sharpeners |
Thank you Richard. I guess I fell for the pretty purple color by getting the AGP. Next time I'll get the C.......and pay attention to the RPM. |
Another bonus of a slow running clipper is, they tend to be quieter. If your pet gets upset when the clipper is turned on, this may help. Richard |
naw, not the noise, siMOne resents being corraled for any lenghth of time. Jack flops on his side and sleeps. |
yes a faster clipper will make your blades run hotter, however with a faster speed you can also cut the hair quicker depending on how dense the coat is and how much you use the clippers is relavent to the type you require. I must just add that i is very important to lubricate the blades during use as this will keep the blades cool and also prolong the cutting efficiency of the blades. try [spam removed] they have some great advice and help and also sell replacement clippers and spare parts [spam removed] |
