Recently I'd read several articles on puppy mills and the growth of that industry in the remote areas. Those articles were in the back of my mind as I drove the back roads, to meet with my clients. Disclaimer here, I've lived and worked in many rural areas, so the general environment was not a new exposure for me. The sad part of my day started as I was sitting in the fire station. A gentleman, from out of state, came to the office door, visibly shaken, and asking for help. Apparently a dog had been hit and left horribly injured and left suffering on the side of the road. He was told vet services were not available within 45 minutes. He said the little girl was convulsing and too seriously injured to move that far and should be put down. The only choice was for one of the firefighters to use his gun to put her down. Everyone in the room was upset, but knew it had to be done. That prompted a conversation with the EMS director about the articles I'd read. She told me the incident where that poor little girl was left to suffer was typical. People tend to let their dogs run and those that hit them with cars care as little as the owners that let them run. She told me that it's easy for the puppy mill owners to see the dogs strictly as a means of income. Vet care, appropriate nourishment and housing is an expense that only cuts into the net profit. It doesn’t take long for them to see a return on investment, so who cares if the dog is dead by 4 years old. Between the thoughts of the poor girl that had been left to suffer, the horrible means of dispatching her misery, and the stories of thoughtless, intentional cruelty, I couldn't wait to get out of there and back to my hotel room. Sorry for sharing such a disturbing story. I only hope that someone surfing the web looking for information on buying a puppy sees this and changes their mind about buying from a source that supports these reprehensible vampires that live off the most innocent. |

Thank you for posting it though ,mabye it really will make even one person think twice before they buy that puppy in the window. |
Thank you for caring enough about the little girl to go and get some help for her. I am sure that the firemen did not want the job, but they also cared enough to put the little lady out of her misery. Sorry you had to witness the incident. Thank you for you compassion. |
That's horrible. |
