I told my groomer (who I think is great!) do what you have to.If you can do a puppy cut that would be the best ! ( I was so happy to find her. she does a great puppy cut.) Well, Harley is naked! She felt so bad but some of the mats were bad and she said he looked to funny with what she called a poodle looking cut. (real short on the legs and longer on the body..!) I downloaded the pictures and am waiting for admin. approval . I can't believe he is my same furkid ( more like baldkid!..lol) I can't say it out loud or laugh or he gets very mad at me and turns his back ....lol I read all the post you guys have been righting about the in between fur stage. I think we were there. Harley will be a year old tomorrow .YEA!!!! I worked on him every day and as soon as I got the mats out they were back the next day. The hair was really strange, thin but long and thick fluff mixed in. He definitely feels better now though. We live in Nashville and have had such a mild winter so far that he has been panting with his winter coat on. I think he feels better in his summer Speedo now...lol... So can some one tell me is the next growth of hair /fur going be any better to keep up with or is Harley going be a puppy cut kid for ever? Thanks , Antoinette |

So where are the pics?????
We love nekkid sheepies too!!! |
The next stage/coat of hair IS a LOT easier and doesn't mat as easily imo.
However, at any stage, taking care of their hair is difficult. I mean... because it entails the owner being persistent and maintaining a routine. Seems like the only time grooming is hard for me is when "I" have not combed her as much as I should have. If the pics in your album are of your baby shaved, he looks adorable! He has got a HUGE nose. I bet it's cold when he touches you with it in the middle of the night. |
Stella is the same age and I have noticed a huge change in her coat. I gave her- what will probably be my last- home bath yesterday and I was amazed at how much work it took.
Her coat which was always generally soft and easy to wash was much thicker and when wet began to mat immediately. I had to comb her out completely before blow-drying... when before I could just let her air dry with no problem. It was fun to see how well behaved she is during her bath and how used to the dryer she has become. It only made me feel more appreciative of and more dependent on my groomer. I have no idea how everyone here who grooms on their own...does it! |
He looks great in his speedo!!
I love sheepies in all lengths of hair. Sometimes it is nice to see them shaved down, because you can get a true idea about the size of the their body. Right now Izzie looks bigger than her friend Harley, but he easily out weights her by about 5lbs and would probably be taller than her if she didn't have puffy hair |
DUHHHH Didn't think to check the album!!
He looks adorable. I'm basically lazy so I keep Tasker clipped pretty short all the time |
Thanks Ms. J. I just seen my Pictures were aproved.
OK ready! Introducing Harley the nekkid sheepie.. |
I'll never get over how funny OESDs look when they're shaved down.
It's shocking how skinny they look. Poor Harley. He must feel naked. |
Well, I know how to take good advice. Harley and I are going to start this new year with a brushing schedule of every other day.
My husband brought me a grooming table from e-bay so there is no excuses anymore. I guess I should get a soft brush and start now while he is nekkid to get him and I used to it. If I get up a 1/2 hour early every other day maybe we can get into a good routine. (And if that don't work... MORE NEKKID SHEEPIE PICTURES FOR THE FORUM.....LOL) ANtoinette |
you know.. that's exactly what I told myself. i decided to get up every day a little early to brush the dogs out before anyone was awake. well, i do get up earlier every morning, but i spend it just waking up and starring at the tv like a zombie. lol |

Your right ,Izzie lookes so much bigger than Harley and he is 90 lbs right now. Antoinette |

That does sound like more fun than brushing...... lol Antoinette |

I too love nekkid sheepdogs . Sorry the groomer didn't keep the "poodle" cut, I'd like to see that in case I want to do that to my guys. Jack just walked by and I noticed some major mats on his lower back. DRAT! Guess he'll have to go nekkid too. It will be much later as they spend hours outside now. |
Poor nekkid Harley!! Give the boy a bit of extra cheese to distract him from his forlorn fate of misery!
Actually OES being embarressed by their nakedness is quite common. In the pack heirarchy their BIG coat gives them an intimidation advantage and I have seen them use it to effect on a number of occassions. Punk was especially upset the first time he was clipped down. Eventually he got used to it but .... Punk's sire was even worse. When he was shaved down he literally hid in the back of the kennel run with his paws over his head so nobody could see him. As a matter of fact his owner couldn't find him and had to check with the kennel operator which run he was in and only then did she recogize him hiding in the far corner of his run. Poor nekkid Bobtails everywhere.... except at Chateau Lindon..... |
Yep he looks embarassed in the 2nd photo but still looks cute.
LOOK at that huge giant nose, Gorgeous. He'll be fluffy soon before you know it |
Simone loves to be nekkid! She'll back up, butt wiggling, begging for more rubbies. She loves the feel of our hands over her Speed-o body. In the summer the lack of hair is easier for her as she stands in the sprinklers......doesn't get weighed down I guess. Sun burn is a concern so she's never cut down too low.
But yes, Carl, many dogs are shocked at suddenly being nekkid. |
He looks cute and love his nose |
He looks adorable. What gorgeous eyes! |
ahh he looks good |
OK, I just got back on the computer and read everyone's reply to the nekkid Harley post, and I knew I had to do something for the boy.
Carl, your post had me laughing so hard cause I can see my Harley hiding his head in shame also! So, here is my answer to the embarrassed Sheppie . What do you think Harley loves It. (Isn't that strange?) He has went to the door when people have come over and held his head up high. Doesn't he look like he is not embarrassed anymore Only one problem, I will not leave it on him when I am not home with him and at night. God forbid he gets tangled or something. Well would you believe he fights me when I try to take it off! I swear It was easier raising a upright kid than this furkid..LOL.... Oh, and thank you all for not commenting on my spelling.....DUHHHH..(IMBARASED) NOW I'M EMBARRASSED . Antoinette |
He looks cute. Still, I love my shepies with their full coat.
If you brush them every day, I promise you, it will take just a few minutes. I have three in full coats and it takes me 30 minutes to brush all three, but I do it every day. I live in Clarksville, just down the road from Nashville and with the humidity that we have, it only takes a day to get the coat matted. I keep their coat even in the summer, dogs don't sweat through their skin like us, they cool off by panting, so it really does not matter, actually, shaving in the summer could give them a sunburn. A breeze going through the coat will cool them off also. Of course I would not have them outside in the middle of the day when we are up to 100, that is common sense. Since my Sara Catherine is a therapy dog, the patients love to touch her fur. Ingrid |
When Bella had her 1st and only hair cut (shave) she acted the same way!
She also found much comfort in a fleece doggie coat. She wore it for days! I'm a bad mom....I let her wear it 24/7. When I took it off her I had to hide it and when she found it she would carry it around and shove it at you until we put it back on. That was the first time she ever wore a doggie jacket, it was put away in the basement. It actually belonged to one of my sheepies that has crossed over the bridge. Some things I just can't part with! Bella now has a plaid fleece jacket that she loves!! By the way I also love naked sheepies......however I recently visited Jill and now I'm considering letting Emmie's hair grow. Clyde is so beautiful. Jill you do good work!! Laurie |
I agree with you guys I love a long haired sheepie. I love the way they look when the wind blows in their hair.
I think Harley and I have a great new start now. Monday is our first get up early brushing date... I did not want to start today because it is his 1 year birthday today. I do think I am also going to have to hide the new sweatshirt Harley is wearing. Laurie, I am glad to know Harley is not the only materialistic Sheepie out there...LOL Antoinette |
Love the shirt - it's funny he likes it so much!!! |
Absolutely loved the pictures of Harley That reminds me when I had Murphy and Bella shaved down in Sept., I had never seen them without alot of hair but my groomer could not get the mats out Too much camping and not enough grooming When my husband came home from work that day and seen them, I thought he would faint. My sheepies were also embaressed also, wish I would of thought of the coat thing |
He's such a cutie, long or nekkid. Just tell him how handsome he is and give him lots of attention and he'll get over the embarrassment really fast. Definitely don't laugh at them when they look different because it does make them act embarrassed.
He is such a cute couch poser too. He is expressive and really hugable. Love his big black nose and pretty eyes. What a sweetie. |
I think he looks adorable! Love his sweater he looks most distinguished. We always keep our Sheepie's shaved down I got used to the look when we lived in California almost everyone we knew with sheepdogs kept them shaved. We let them grow out for about 6 months, brushing daily and then shave them for camping season. I like sheepies any way them come long or short. My Maggie has a red coat that she wears on walks makes her look like movie star! Just know she would adore a sweater |
He looks so pleased with his shirt! I think he looks adorable, and I am sure he feels good to be mat-free. |
I actually cried when we cut Clyde down. We had just gotten Bear and they played so much, his already somewhat matted coat got even worse. It was coming up on summer so we thought we'd give it a try. Though I hated it at the time, I'm glad we did it now. It grew back in beautifully and it's much easier to maintain since started serious grooming habits as soon as his cat started growing in. Thanks to a grooming lesson from Mandy in PA, Clyde's never looked better.
It only took 8 months to go from this: To this: |

Antoinette, my Dixie girl wore a t-shirt for a long time, to cover and protect many skin sores she had trouble getting to heal. What I did was tie up the ends of the shirt over haunches, in a tight knot. At nite or when in her crate (she's not crated anymore) I would always fastened the knot with a tight elastic so it could not get tangled up. And if the arms were long I cut them short. I wanted her to be nice and warm while sleeping, because I saw her shivering in her sleep, poor baby. |
OMG ButtersStotch Clyde looks so great !
I love the pictures. I now have hope Harley can look great too. Thanks for the inspiration . Antoinette |
Thanks Bosley's mom , that is a great idea .I will do that.
It would figure all of a sudden Tennessee Temperature is starting to drop! (The news said maybe tonight snow flurries) Kind of like washing your car so it will rain. I shaved the Harley to get some snow! DUHHHH, I should have known, Murphy's law Antoinette |
OK so Stella has not been shaved down, but during her hospital stay they had to shave her leg for the IV, etc..and she came back showing us that her huge legs and paws were all fluff!
|
Ooooh she has a poodle pom pom on her leg.
Still looking gorgeous even with her fancy leg hair style. |

OMG That looks so funny........... poor girl....... Antoinette |
Stella looks so rough and tumble...exept one little part looks so delicate. |
When I got Molly she was about a year old, her previous mum had great difficulty grooming her and it took a long time before I could groom her properly, she would lie still for about 10 seconds then sort of explode with legs all over the place, anyway we got there in the end - a few years back I was visiting a town and saw a dog grooming parlour, well Molly had developed a few tangles so I left her, come back in an hour they said, three hours later I finally got her back, she was shaved to the skin and they had caught her with the clippers in several places. It was a hot summers day but she shivered so much we had to buy her a jumper!!
That was the first and last time I used a dog groomer (thats not to say there are not some very good ones out there!) |
Poor Molly.
She looks great now, you do good work . Antoinette |
I posted pics of Chewie in his t-shirts earlier - they are working wonderful. He wears the boys size large long sleeve t's. I started by pulling the excess up in a rubber band. Then I decided to make them semi fitted. I stitched a line from the collar down to the hem on the front(underside) of the shirt. I gradually contoured the line to fit - so more was removed from the bottom edge to fit witout a rubber band. They work great and fit snug enough all over. I bought the shirts for $1 at the thrift store too.
Chewie initially wore them to save coat from his buddy Riley. Riley pulled it out when they played. But then I found it keeps him cleaner, dryer in the snow and less burrs and weeds seeds in his coat. He loves wearing them. |
OMG! Thank you for the fix up on my spelling Ron.
You are toooooo funny.............LOL Now only Harley will be embarrassed about this post.... Antoinette |
Antoinette, that picture of Bob and Harley sleeping really made me laugh - excellent!!
Peter |
Thanks Peter.
Typical Sheppie. I guess they can fall asleep anywhere....LOL Antoinette |
