Hair loss

I have an 5 year old neutered male oes that has started to lose his hair on his back. It seems to be symetrical. All preliminary blood work has come back normal with additional tests for Cushings tomorrow. (After having two small balding patches a year ago he was tested for underactive thyroid. He is on Thyroid medication - which has managed his levels nicely and the hair grew back -though darker after a few months. Now he is only growing short hair on most of his back - and it easily pulls out or breaks off. He has been on a prescription skin and coat supplement and has always been on lamb and rice dog food due to his sensitive stomach. He is going for skin scrapings tomorrow. any ideas would be helpful. Thank you.

I can't be of any help, but I do know that the hair growing back darker is normal.

Hope you find the answer soon!!
Have the thyroid level checked too. The dose may be a bit off.
I would suggest you have a full thyroid panel done, not just the T4. It is normal for the hair to be black and sometimes to be thinner than the rest of the coat.
I was just thinking that an increased level of the thyroid medication may cause the hair loss or make it weaker.
It does in humans, anyway.
Our Winston exhibited these symptoms and did have Cushing's disease. He was probably 7 yrs. old at the time. He was put on Lysodren and lived another 7 years. He always remained active and appeared healthy except his hair was a bit thinner than an unaffected OES.

Please let us know what the tests determine.
The preliminary test indicates Cushings. Rex goes for the other half of the test on friday. I'm glad to hear that your dog lived another 7 years- most of what a read suggested a max of two :( He is very much himself otherwise and a happy boy at that. My vet said he is THE nicest oes he has ever met!
I don't have much to add....... you might want to ask your Vet about Derm Caps, a supplemetn for the skin and hair. They have helped Tasker quite a bit.

Good Luck!
Patty , I just read your post. I don't know if you or anyone on the forum has tried any homeopathic remedy's for specific illnesses ?

Here is a site and a kit they sell but there are others also on the web.

Years ago a friend of mine in Fl. had these same issues with one of her Danes, I did some research and got her a kit.
It worked great! :clappurple:

I think the natural approach seams to work great for our furkids cause they don't have as many toxins in there bodies as us.

For example..........
Natural remedies will work best if :
You don't drink caffeine (soda / coffee ect...)
You don't eat junk food
limit alcohol assumption
avoided chemicals
ect,ect,ect......

well, most of our sheepies do avoid these things.
( I hope....I do wonder about Walter though and the alcohol? :lmt: That last picture.... :twitch: )LOL.....
(Just kiddin..I just Love Walter's new hair cut picture..) :D

Anyway these remedies seem to work great for them.
it is soooo worth a try.

Big kisses for rex..I hope he gets better soon...

Thankfully Rex's ultrasound showed no tumors anywhere. The only abnormality they could find was that Rex has a very small liver. We are proceeding with liver blood work to see if there is any connection. The two vets in on the case are unsure as to the Cushings diagnosis, they think that there may be some pituitary involvement that is causing the symptoms. At best Rex will not have to take the Lysodren - basically a poison that kills off the adrenal tumors. We are holding off on any meds as he is very happy and except for the bald back is perfectly content. It may be that I have to go ahead and buy a coat for him- how humiliating - a Bobtail with a coat! I am also going to switch his food to something for coat and skin conditions.
