Once more into the breech..

OK.. take 2 shall we.. lets hope i dont jinx this but we are doing good so far.

After the death of Ursa we decided not to be put off and started a new hunt as we dotn trust the past breeder to fullfill their promise to replace her nor do we trust that said replacement will be as healthy.

thanks to Willowsprite for all her brilliant advice and putting up with my stupidness at times ; )

I did some hunting and look and LOADS of reading and background work.

I found a lovely family that raise sheepdogs for well.. hearding and working on thier farm. I got references from past litters and people who had pups from this litter and everyone sung her praises. One man was even so nice enough to call me back after his pup went to his vet and harped on about his pup and how his vet was going on n on about what a fabulous dog she was and in such great condition and health and she was the runt of the litter. He was a proud OES buddy there I can tell you.

The breeder was also kind enough to give me her vets name and credintials and i spoke at length with her vet quizing her on the breeders past and present litters and her current dogs. Her vet even went so far as to say that there arent alot of people like her about and that she would be sad to see a breeder like her leave as she was one of the best dog people she knew.

Everyone I talked to had only positive praises for her. So i began to talk to her more and she wants me to make sure to send pictures and mails and to keep in touch. She stated that for any reason we couldnt take care of pup to bring her back and if anything ( oo crossing fingers n praying )happens she would fully refund us. All animals health tested.. registered.. etc.etc.. =)

So.. after some humming n hawing we said alright send us some pictures.. we narrowed it down and asked for more pictures of them standing walking etc.. to get a better gauge and 1 pup kept calling out to me.. something about one lass .. she is soo much a look at me pup..

ANYWAY.. yesterday I made the trip up and got her.. After several hours and several pee stops and her falling alseep a few times on the kids we made it home where she promptly made herself known to the house. Guiness our first dog( the border collie/GS mix) keeps herding her around the house and being a mom dog to the highest degree.. they were playing up a storm last night .. hearing the puppy growling n barking and chasing Guiness and the kids around was a welcome change to Ursa and her illness. This one is so full of life and bouncy its amazing. I had almost forgotten how much fun they are. She does nothing in halves. Full out play.. power nap.. play.. power nap.. shes smashing this lass.

She is also a hard one to pin down on names.. I had been tinkering with the idea to call her registered name Bellatirx of Ursa and Orion ( ursa and Orion going to be our kennel name me thinks =) ) Bellatrix is one of the stars in Orion. And my son refuses to call her anything but Bell.. he loves the name.. (altho for a time her wanted to name her chicken.. thank god it wasnt godzilla tho ) ... never had such a problem naming a dog before.. dont know why.. shes a toughie tho.. She is also interesting in the fact that if you look at her left side she looks like a completly different dog as compared to her right side.. sooo cute and yet so odd..

so i shall shut the rambling now and introduce you all to Bell.. the newest member to the Watson pack..

I'm so happy to hear about your happy ending!!!!!!!!!! I am sure you must be a NERVOUS wreck this time around. But it sounds like you did your homework and all will be well!!

Unfortunately the link to your pics didn't work :( , and you KNOW we want pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The link worked for me - I'm glad you were able to add a pup to your household!!!!! :D

Mop Lover
Wow! Congratulations! Bellatrix (Bell) is a beautiful name for a beautiful girl!! I love her eyelashes! She is completely adorable and sounds like a hoot. I am so happy for your happy news.

:D
what a GORGEOUS wee sheepie, congratulations
Well, must be user trouble, they worked the second time

ADORABLE, I just love all the black!
oh, she is so precious! I love the pictures - and those eyes! melted my heart for sure... anyone need a puppy sitter??
Bell is adorable! So tiny - how old is she? Congratulations on your new family member!
WHAT A GORGEOUS PUPPY! WOW! Good luck to you and your family with this little girl sheepie. I will be looking forward to seeing more pics of her!
Oh, wonderful news! She's beautiful!

Sounds like she came from a great breeder too, and you really did your homework! Good for you!

:clappurple: Love her name! :clappurple:

Can a kennel name be multiple words? You may want to choose a shorter kennel name since the kennel name is the first part of a pup's registered name, and you only get a limited number of characters total.
boogers Steph.. guess i will have to figure that out then eh.. grrr..oh well.. not a worry..

Aye she is a stunner.. she has a right expressive face.. Currently she is deciding on wether to go back to sleep or chase Guiness about.. such tough decisions =)

and we are taking it steady with this one.. still nervous and fearful but something inside me is telling me to stop it and enjoy.. its all right.. so trying to listen to that voice cause Bell is a hoot and I should be enjoying her to the fullest..

thanks gang..

oo she went back to sleep.. figures =P

oo she is 8 weeks and almost 10 pounds.. shes a chuncky lass
She's very cute! She looks so little! I'm sure a name will come to you. I think it took a week before we settled on our cats' names...calling them anything and everything in between while we settled!
Congrats on taking the plunge again!!!

She is too cute :hearts:
She's just SO precious!! :hearts: Congratulations on baby Bell! Oh, the years of fun you have ahead of you! :go:
Awww what a pretty sweet girl you have. I love the name Belle...i could cuddle her myself :hearts:
She is a real cutie, that's for sure.

It's quite nerve wracking picking up a new puppy after the nightmare that we went through before, but she makes you forget your worries when she's darting around everywhere with the kids and our other pooch.

She's a real personality and amazingly vocal. She'll slot in to our crazy household perfectly. :)
She's quite a looker, that girl! Congratulations on Belle. :D

Now, you know two pictures are not nearly enough. Right?
Don't worry. we're working on filling the camera up.
Great!! Post away!! :D

Do NOT give me ANY credit for what you are doing.

I'm actually quite angry and frustrated that we spent so much time trying to help you find reputable breeders. Sending you to oesca, ofa, trying to teach you how to research pedigrees and ofa records, trying to explain why it is so important to our breed that people do not take it lightly and how important it is to do things right. Yet you went ahead and did what you wanted with (in my opinion) no real regard for the breed anyway.

(in my opinion)You clearly do not understand what it is about OES that makes them so wonderful, or you would be doing everything you can to preserve that.
Sorry you feel like that... i ddi what you told me.. and further.. i told you i wanted to find a stock working dog.. which is what i did..

again.. sorry ... but i did listen to you... wether you think i did or not..

=((

I find it hard to believe that Stacey would have advised you towards anything like a "stock working dog" because that is not the ideal OES to breed. All of her suggestions sound like steering you away from that.

Actually there are several reputable breeders who have working dogs, I wouldn't have advised against a working dog.
It didn't come up til you found a farmer who wouldn't put contracts or limited registration on your dog and won't care what you do with it in the years to come. In my opinion that is why you are buying a dog from this person.
when i say stock working.. i mean those OES that are still used as they were originally intended.. for herding purposes.. so i found someone who does use there OES for that purpose..

the best way to understand something and grow with something is to start at its roots.. which is what i wanted to do... the roots of this breed lie in its work.. so i wanted to find a pup from a working line.. which is what she is.. her father n mother help to work on the farm and herd n such..

from there you learn and understand a dogs purpose..

you dont take a show gun dog and expect it to be a champ hunter.. and you cant learn a breed like that..

start at begining.. i DID listen to her.. but I could not find a working stock local to me on the "registered" list.. they are all show stock.. so i took the other bits of advice she gave me about researching health checks and pedigrees and took that and applied it to the hunt ..

going back to the start is NOT a bad thing.. just bit risky.. but then again.. if things DONT work out its not like i plan on ditching Bell and "upgrading".. she is a good dog.. I DO have this breeds best intrest at heart and i DO want to do things right.. that thing might seem forgiegn to some but perfectly natural to others.. it is not bad.. just different.. =/

Bell loves the kids and they love her .. we ALL love her..and first and foremost she is a family dog..Family first and for life..

and as i said to Willow.. sorry if i dissapointed her.. but we are NOT dissapointed with Bell..
=/

Those that i contaced from the list werent.. and NO that is NOT why i got her..

i got her cause she is a lovely little lass whom i feel in love with and shine in her eyes..
Well, you have 2 years to find out, right? As it will take that long to know if she is good "breeding" stock.

You never did answer my question of a few days ago...Why do you want to breed? I think we both know the real truth.....

And don't give me the line about loving oes's, and to spread the joy etc. etc...It is so your little girl can bring you some money...

Greed, greed, greed....that is all there is to it. I hope you are not offended by the truth.

if i wanted to get into dogs for money then i would NOT have chosen this breed.. i would have gone for my grandfathers line of Plott hounds or my grandmothers line of beagles.. as his hounds were worth alot more than the OES i have come across.. even before they were allowed into the AKC as their hunting lines were outstanding.. and people came from all over the world to purchase my grandmothers beagles.. even bloody presidents bought dogs from them..

i never do anything for money.. and never will .. money is a cop out.. i am doing this cause i DO love the breed .. wether you believe me or not..

what offends me is that none of you have bothered to get to know me or else these accusations would never even spring to mind..
Blimey... what happened here??? We have a lovely little pooch that has brought our entire household joy in the last 24 hours. That is the first and foremost important thing.

My wife would love to work with this breed more a couple of years down the road and though you might jump to the conclusion that everything boils down to money then you are honestly mistaken. If anything I can see her losing money.

I can assure that my wife is an incredible dog lover and would only ever do anything with dog’s best interests at heart.

Is it wrong for her to have a love of this breed? Is it wrong for her to want to work with these dogs and maybe one day is able to show and breed? I don't know... But if she was looking for a 'make money quick scheme' then I’d certainly advise against this as my line of work can make a lot more cash with no overheads, a much lower level of dedication, quicker and can be walked away from anytime.

I have encouraged her to go in to this if it is something that she really wants to do. In some ways I’m now wishing that I hadn’t as It’s brought a whole load of heart ache.

Before you hurl accusations around, please remember that at the other end of the screen might be an honest, sensitive person.

I’ll be going home tonight, playing with our new family member and smiling at her chewing on my kids feet. I’ll post pictures for those that feel comfortable enough to look at them later.

Alan.

First of all, you don't even know the breed. You have never had an OES, so this statement has nothing backing it. Until you have had an OES to share your life you can say that you like the looks, and that you "think" you may get to like the breed, but picking one and deciding to make more, because you like the type of dog, is nonsense.

Second of all, if you did like the breed, and were not doing it for money, you would be taking the advice that has been given to you and doing it right, and to better the breed. Listen to the experts, if you are truly wanting to do this because you like them...

Better, yet, if you like the breed then why not do rescue....then you will really be helping them.

Other than that, why breed????? Why would you want to bring more puppies into this world that is euthanising homeless dogs every day?

For your "enjoyment?" Tell that to all the homeless OES's in rescue.
I have added some pictures to the album, but I guess I should have really put them in the puppy album rather than the portrait. If an an admin could move them for me that would be appreciated.

She's settling in really great so far. She pretty much plomps herself down where the mood takes her. She'll run around causing havoc for a while before crashing again. She's great with the kids and great with our other pooch and they play up a storm at any oportunity. They were at it in the wee hours this morning.

She has tons of personality. Pretty mischevious and pretty lovie all at the same time and she just loves picking stuff up around this in her mouth and moving it about. Looks like I gotta start hiding my shoes :)

OK... I have pretty much had all I can take of this.

You have no idea who my wife is... you have no idea of her feelings, intentions or personality and I am sick of wild accusations and down right foul attitude towards her. She has owned many, many dogs in her life. Some dogs that have been rescued fixed up at the vets and then re-homed once they were back to full health... and for money? No... because she loves dogs. Yet you accuse her of wanting dogs for 'Her Enjoyment'.

If she wanted a dog for money, she'd be ensuring that she got a dog that was a sure fire money-spinner. What we have right now is a pet. Is there possibility that she could become more? Maybe... Is there possibility that she'll be a member of our family for the rest of her life and part of our family? That's without question!

This is a breed that my wife wants to work with. She's always wanted to make something of her love for dogs and if she can do that, then fantastic... because I know she'll put her heart into it and as far as I'm concerned, heart and love is the most important thing.

You say that she doesn't know the breed... well if she's not allowed to own one, how can she ever truly get to know the breed?

With the amount of dogs she has rescued, should she not be allowed to buy a dog for once? She has never paid for a dog other than rescue dogs before finally taking the plunge in to the world of the Olde English Sheepdog. Her first venture was a nightmare... she's still hurt over the problems we had when we got Ursa and now it seems like she shouldn't be allowed to get to know them at all.

One question I have... if there are so many dogs being euthanized... shouldn't we all go rescue? All of our pets are rescues, even the hermit crabs but I don't see others being blasted for buying a pup. Is that only because they didn't show interest in wanting to work with these dogs?

With what we have gone through recently... with the hurt we have felt and the tears we have shed, some of the words here have upset my wife and me deeply.

I suggest we draw a line in the sand and start again because I don't see how shooting somebody down for wanting to enter the world of these dogs is a crime.

Trust me... I can see her in a few years dragging me up and down the country to save the buggers.

Good Idea!

I'm Ron. I have had 2 rescue OES, Jake ('92 NEOESR), and Mulligan ('04 NEOESR). My avatar is Jake.

I was on the board of directors for NEOESR for 6 years, my wife Joan was on the board for 2. We have fostered 1 dog (delivered to Hawaii), and transported a few, and performed a home check or two.

I have been running this site since 1998, and this forum since January 8, 2002. Monday will be 5 years!

I heard that you had lost a puppy. I'm very sorry that happened, but I understand you have just purchased a new little fella. Please be sure to post some pictures and tell us about him in another thread.
