I would love a bearded collie because they are smaller, but want to know how much of that clownish personality I'd be missing that I get from our OES? Herd more? Get along more or less with things/people? Just what is your overall experience with one? Every once and awhile, Mr. J and I have this discussion because we find one that peaks our interest. This is going to sound bad that we have discussed this (as if we're waiting for it to happen), but we've agreed that if the maltese goes next ...i get to pick the next dog. If his sheepie goes, well... we're getting another sheepie. Hopefully they both have 10+ years left! |

Maggie just played with a bearded collie at the dog park today. He was beautiful -- really silky long hair. They romped around like two sheepies together -- chasing, wrestling, pouncing, herding, rolling, etc. He was maybe a bit more intense and focuses where Maggie is just plain goodfy. They had such a wonderful time that I hope we see him again. One of the other people at the park thought they were the same kind of dog. Based on this one experience, I really liked the bearded. |
Is there anything else about colorado you feel the need to make me feel jealous about? you've got sheepies in your NEIGHBORHOOD, a bearded collie at the park,...

AND the people told me there is another sheepdog I haven't met who comes to the park every afternoon. George! They said he is a big, cuddly lovebug. I can't wait to meet him. We'll introduce Yuki to everyone once you guys move here. . . |
I know a breeder who breeds both OES & Beardies. Their first love are their OES still after all of these years. The differences I've heard about Beardies are that they are very active and need lots of stimulation. Almost in the Border Collie range. I think there are a couple of members here that have both breeds so I'm sure they will chime in.
Grooming is easier and they are smaller than OES I think the 40-60 lb. range. |
We had a couple beardies come for herding classes. They were happy and busy. They weren't as intense as the herding border collies we had here for classes. Much weaker eye and bounced and barked at the sheep - more like a sheltie. They were in full show coat and absolutely Beautiful! |
We saw a beardie yesterday while visiting relatives....this beardie was larger than our sheepies.....so I guess like sheepies...the weight/size varies.
The coat was more silky and I think they don't have as thick an undercoat. |
I had a beardie growing up. She was a very sweet dog...seemed less crazy than our OES. She was smaller than our OES (Maggie, my parents' OES who they got after Cricket the beardie died is 70-75 pounds). I think she was in the upper 60s to maybe 70 pounds, though, so she wasn't little. Her hair was silkier than an OES, she had a tail, so things were swept off tables...the silkier hair was easier to groom in my opinion. She hated haircuts and would get embarassed like she knew she was nekkid... She was very stubborn--we'd go for walks and she'd decide she was done and just sit down, so many times my mom would have to get in the car to look for us because we hadn't returned and she'd find me and Cricket sitting on the curb a block away...
I love beardies...I think they are a great choice...she wasn't nearly as silly as an OES, she was more agile, but not super active like a collie. |
