I take mine into Petsmart. For eight dollars each, they will trim the nails in just a few minutes. Cheap, IMO. |
I agree with taking them somewhere. It's cheap, faster and less stressful for everyone! My dogs don't even mind it but I'm squeamish about it so I have them do it every once in awhile at doggie day care.
Are you taking them on walks? Once you get them clipped the first time, regular walks on concrete usually keep them at bay. My boys' nails hardly ever need it but my old girl, who doesn't like to move as much, is the one who seems to get really long nails. When they're really long, they're harder to get short too, because the quick goes further and further out so it's a slow process to get them short again. |
You can try using a DREMEL Pet Nail Grooming Kit too which seems to be less stressful for some reason. If your dog has any fur on its paws I would recommend punch little holes in a sock so that the dremmel doesn't get caught up on the fur. |
Thanks for the replys. I do take them for walks but maybe the walks aren't long enough to help. Since they are long, how often do I need to bring them to Petsmart to help the quick shrink? Also, I tried an equivent to Dremel but the noise scared them too much. They were running away and hiding. What wimps! lol |
The vet i used to work at used a dremmel sort of tool on rabbit teeth and dog nails ... BUT ... we found that in some dogs ( especially rescues ) the sound of the dremmel scared them and they would freak out.
Try laying your dogs down and grooming them ... or talking to them until they are very relaxed then while petting them ect. hold their feet and clip their nails ... tada ... That's just what I would do |
