Boy do I ever know about fussy eaters... LOL
I went through that with Dancer, I tried everything... What worked was putting a bit of stinky canned cat food on her puppy kibble. Also, she loves butter, so putting a bit of butter on the food, then melting it with warm water and stirring it in works really well. |
My bosses mom told me about Mayo....I thought it was gross at first, however, when you think about it, it is good for their coat and they love the stinky smell. You only need a small amount...mix with the dry food...if he doesnt like it, dont leave it down for too long....but I have to say when Panda gets in her finiky moods...she will eat the mayo kibble... |
or cottage cheese...barney didn't eat when we first got him so we put a tablespoon of lowfat cottage cheese mixed in to his food and he devoured it...when he gets into finicky moods now I still resort to the cottage cheese (or even a sprinkle of any shredded cheese). |
Or even try a better food, with chunks, or a different texture. Lucy won't eat anything in pate form-- it has to look like stew. We feed Merrick canned food and it's an excellent food. |
Paige was a picky eater ALL her life! I hope your boy won't be the same! Two things Paige could not resist: being fed raw (B.A.R.F.), mackerel and oatmeal cookies. While being raw fed, she never had a finicky moment!
Other times the mackerel or oatmeal cookies would work...fortunately not together! If your boy is losing teeth, maybe his mouth is sore and eating just "ain't" fun. In the meat time, drive your self crazy finding something that will go down him. Most of us have been there......in fact right now one of mine is being difficult so he's getting grated cheese on his food. This will pass. |
I can tell you from Saint experience (not OES) that canned Jack Mackerel will make the picky ones eat! (If you can handle the smell). It is inexpensive
and great for the dog IMO! We used it to help get an emaciated and sad girl from the shelter to fatten up. |
How long did you all add the cheese or milk to your sheepie's food?? |
Sardines in with the food, smelly, but they sure do love it. |
Izzie is easy...if I need her to eat right away or she is being picky a little parmesan cheese is all it takes. I think because it is a smellier cheese. |
We've never added anything to kibble to encourage eating, actually. If Barkley needed encouragement to eat (he did at a young age and still does occasionally), we hand-feed.
For the first 2-3 months we hand fed every meal or stuffed it in a Kong. Now, if he needs encouragement to eat, we'll stuff it in a Kong, hand-feed or have a little training session. Using a few pieces of kibble for rewards for a little training work gets him eating and then we can handfeed the rest. Funny thing is, he'll do tricks for kibble even as he's sitting right next to a whole bowl full of it. Making it fun/a treat seems to make a difference when needed. That won't work with wet food though, unless you really want to hand feed that. I've seen bottled gravy at the pet store, but I've never read the ingredients or bought it. |

Actually, we got Barney at 6 months old and we gave him the cheese every day until he was about 2. Then we ran out and just didn't go to the store for it and Barney ate his food, so we pretty much stopped, although I'll still sprinkle some cheese in at dinnertime to make the glucosamine go down easier. |

With the canned food, how much of it do they get each day? I'm thinking of doing something similar, kibble with canned. |
Evangers makes the worst smelling canned mackeral....with elbow noodles and veggies...not a combo that i crave, but panda loves it....it takes all i can to not gag when i mix a little bit in her brehttp://www.evangersdogfood.com/dog/20108.htmlakfast. |
We had the same concern with BAM-BAM from 8 weeks on. He is now 6 years old. He never has been fond of meal times. The first dog I have ever had that runs out the door when he hears the kibble being poured in his bowl. He has learned that when we sit down for dinner, he to must eat his. I add a few sprinkles of canned wild salmon and he seems to enjoy that. I tried several dry foods in the beginning and he just didn't like any of them period. So we decided on Natural Choice for him. My vet informed me, better he isn't a big eater and he maintains a lean body mass, it will make it much easier on his large bone frame. Maybe they know more than we, what is best for them sometimes. |

I don't give the boys much. They split one can between them. Lucy gets 2 cans and Bear eats whatever she doesn't eat. |

That's exactly what we did w/our maltese. But, I also felt since I chose a good brand and it was medicated, she was going to have to just eat the food. Many people wouldn't want to put their furkid through that, but I knew she would eat when she got hungry. Sometimes she skips a day, and we have to say "EAT!" ...but once we actually TELL HER TO, and handfeed her the first few, she will finish the rest. Been doing this for 5 years. |
Kirby has been an incredibly picky eater since we brought him home, and finally it came down to he'll eat when he's hungry and won't if he's not. We tried mixing all sorts of food/canned goodies in with his dry food, and he still won't eat it that much. We still offer him food 3-4 times a day, and if he wants to eat, he will. He's a little thinner now than when we brought him home, but is also growing a lot.
