He has been happy and playful and still wanting to eat - you would never know anything was wrong. We haven't changed his food or anything. The only possible explanation is that he was licking the bathroom floor earlier so I decided to clean it today - I found a bit of puppy shampoo had spilled and hardened on the floor. It is all clean now and I definitely didn't let him lick very long even when I could see nothing . . . My poor baby . . . |

Ugh. Diarrhea sucks for everyone. I'm sorry. |
I hope he's feeling better soon...
If he is that sensitive perhaps it would be a good idea to look into a new food? I would also look into adding digestive enzymes to his food if his stools are regularily looser than they should be.... |
Lucy has always been "loose" too. Our vet suggested fiber and it helped quite a lot too. |
Panda and Blue have rock hard guts as I like to describe them but Merlin experiences a lot of stomache problems so I sympathetize with little Bingley. Poor little pup! Belly rubs from me and hope it clears up soon!
Marianne and the boys Oh just a thought, if you've had rain recently - could he be drinking stagnant water outside on his bathroom breaks? Just a thought, as I realized that Merlin had been doing this which caused one of his bouts once. |
I would bet the shampoo is/was the problem. Soap will cause diarrhea, even in 2 leggers. As an older nurse I remember the soap suds enema's.
It shouldn't hurt him as long as he's hydrated. If this is the cause it should pass in a day or 2.......... Kathy |
If you know that there has been no change in diet, no parasites, etc., you might want to have the vet check do the bloodwork test for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (not the same as Irritable Bowel Syndrome). IBD makes a dog unable to absorb the nutrients properly in his intestine, therefore diarrhea. We had the same problem with Frank who would have very regular diarrhea bouts. He would be fine one day and then he would have episodes that would last a day or 2. Really liquid stuff too which can make your life miserable as you are trying to keep a coat for show. Frank is on prescription dog food which has completely cured him of this problem. Just a thought since OES stomachs are so sensitive to begin with if this is going to be more of a common thing we see in the breed. |
Hey thanks for all the suggestions! We have him on carafate and flagyl (sorry for the misspellings) to see if it will clear things up, but even with the carafate his stools are nasty - no more straight diarrhea, but it is still sticking to him.
Our vet is out until Tuesday, and I think I will mention Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I'm also wondering if he has allergies. It's just not consistent. About a month ago we transitioned him to a new food and for a couple weeks he was doing really well, and then poof - yucky again . . . |
It wasn't consistant for us either so that's why I'm wondering if it could be the same thing. It could also be food allergies too which the prescription dog foods also help. The food we have Frank on is called Purina HA. I know you immediately start to wonder if it's good quality but it is specially formulated to digest better. It's about $70 for a 35 lb. bag. Maybe you could at least try it too to see if it helps. It was a night & day difference after we put Frank on it.

The best thing sometimes is to just not feed them for a day, lots of water. No food. Then some rice and broth. Pumpkin is good for the digestion also. |
I can't remember exactly how long ago your show was. He could have picked something up there.
I hope he starts feeling better. |
