Quitting Caffeine/Coffee

My palms are sweaty and I'm all jittery from my 4th coffee of the day. I know it's not good for me to drink coffee all day and hardly drink anything else, but when I try to go a day without coffee I end up with a KILLER headache.

Anyone had success quitting coffee? Any advice for the withdrawal headaches as well as the sleepiness (other than "sleep more, dummy!")?

Maybe my week off work for the holidays would be a good time to get myself off caffeine....

I have not quit, but there have been times when I cut down. What I find helps is to do it gradually. If you usually have 4 cups throughout the day...cut down to 3 for a few days to a week...then 2 cups....then 1 and so on. By doing it this way you minimize any withdrawl symptoms.

I did this with my diet coke intake...for awhile there I would have 5 or 6 a day. Now I am down to 2 or 3 on most days.
Why would you do such a thing?!! 8O :twitch: 8O
Haha. I know what you mean. Seems like such a Canadian thing too, eh? Stifling August heat and we've got a Timmies in our hand.

I'm thinking if I have withdrawl symptoms then I need to quit, or cut back to 1 per day.

Someone once said to me that we don't ever get withdrawl symptoms from anything that is good for us (no withdrawl symptoms from broccoli!), and that has really stuck with me.
I think you should compromise...don't quit...just cut back. 8)
i quit coffee for a year and a half and i was a better person for it ... i acctually slept at night ( after the initial withdrawl ) and i was calmer over all and i was actually MORE awake ... try an apple in place of a cup of coffee ... feels great apples do a very similar thing for your nervous system that caffienee does
Thanks! Tomorrow I will try one cup of coffee and stash an apple in my purse for late morning or early afternoon. :D
I only have one cup of coffee a day...if I have more I get the jitters and I am really crabby....
If I don't have my coffee I have a killer headache.....
I am thinking that over the holiday is NOT the time for me to get off the coffee(kids at home)
Try swapping out to tea. Less caffeine but enough that you won't go through withdrawls, plus tea has so many other great health and anti-oxidant effects. I switched a long time ago and feel much better without all the coffee running through my veins!
I went from over 20 cups of coffee a day (when I was a cath lab nurse working absurdly ridiculous hours) to ONE cup a day by cutting down VERY slowly. Believe it or not the hardest "cut" was when I went from two to one cup. That second cup was the hardest.

Caffeine is a drug and you really should not go "cold turkey" you will have nausea, headaches and sweats. You need to titrate the amount you consume down over a period of days or weeks.

Teas can actually have MORE caffeine than coffee, depending on the type of tea and brew time. In it's dry form black tea has more caffeine than coffee but the actual content of a cup of tea depends on the time it is brewed. Some people switch to tea then decrease the brew time.

The reason an apple works is because it gives your body a bit of sugar. New studies out are showing that a cup or two of coffee a day actually has some great health benefits.
Actually all tea starts from the same plant-- from there the way it is oxidized determines the color. In its dry form, coffee has more caffeine than tea. Brew time of tea can factor in but there are other things that increase or decrease the amount of caffeine in tea.

I just watched this 2 hour special on tea on the history channel, plus Adiago teas gives you a free "history of tea" book with every purchase. I'm afriad I know much more about tea than anyone probably should.
As with many things, I guess the answer depends on your source. I just had a discussion about this with someone. My first resource were my nutrition books which gave basically the same table as below, a wide variance in caffeine content.

Below is the site that discusses the relative caffeine content of dry tea vs coffee.

Does Tea Contain More Caffeine Than Coffee?
While coffee and tea are both sources of caffeine, the amounts of caffeine in any single serving of these beverages varies significantly. An average serving of coffee contains the most caffeine, yet the same serving size of tea provides only 1/2 to 1/3 as much.(Ref.: Caffeine by The Institute of Food Technologists' Expert Panel on Food Safety & Nutrition.) One of the more confusing aspects of caffeine content is the fact that coffee contains less caffeine than tea when measured in its dry form. The caffeine content of a prepared cup of coffee is significantly higher than the caffeine content of a prepared cup of tea.

Mountain Dew........... Noew THERE'S Caffeine for you!!
Maybe I'll try switching to one cup of coffee in the morning, then a tea late morning or afternoon.

Green tea has a decent amount of caffeine and is supposed to be really good for you, so I'll have green tea.

The holidays will be a good time for me to try to cut back since I'll be more well-rested.

Thanks ladies - and love the discussion on tea.

Mountain dew has crazy amounts of caffeine in the US, but apparently has no caffeine in Canada... at least, it's not listed on the label. :?

Lol. That's how they get ya!
Also, I've found that just the habit of drinking the coffee is part of the problem, so maybe just substitute a decaf hot drink instead of the coffee...and then kind of wean yourself from there...
