I think we've pretty much decided to "unwrap" Dickens on Christmas eve- he's coming earlier that day by plane from West Virginia. Without being unfair to Dickens (i.e. putting him with a friend for Xmas eve after already leaving his litter and enduring a plane flight), we just thought it would be better to do it the night before the craziness of Christmas morning. Also, that will allow Dickens to sleep (?) in his new home rather than go through another environment (i.e. friend's house). One other idea is to just bring the kids to the airport when I get Dickens and let them greet him off the plane. Any brainstorms? |

I wouldn't bring them to the airport... chances are he will have peed, and possibly pooped, and will need a quick bath and blow dry. Introductions could be made after he is all clean |
Good point- and guess I'd better be preapred for that at the airport. Do you agree about Xmas eve as opposed to Xmas morning though? |
I do! Santa makes it a point to bring the puppies to their new homes first, so that they can stay warm. It's just too cold for them to stay in his sleigh all night. He'll be back after they go to sleep with the rest of their gifts, but he knew Dickens needed to be dropped off early.
Can you post the video of him playing with his littermates? |
WOOT A PUPPY FOR CHRISTMAS ! that would Rock if i was 11 or 5 i would NEVER EVER forget the year i got a puppy for xmas |
Dickens is scheduled to fly in tomorrow afternoon. First, after leaving his littermates, he has an hour's drive to the airport, then a short flight to Chicago, where he has a 2 hour layover and the then flight to NY- from when the breeder drops him off, Dickens will be travelling (and /or laying over) for approx. 6-7 hours- I am concerned about the stress for him. My plan, of course, is to bring him right home and try to get him calmed down, fed, acclimated. We'll play it by ear as to when to introduce him to the kids. He's probably going to be one scared, exhausted puppy by the time he gets to NY. |
Don't be surprised if he's a little messy, too. He'll do fine though, I'm sure! |
Hi,
Welcome to the forum! I can't wait to hear stories of Lil Dickens upcoming adventures and of course photos!! We love photos here as you can tell. I think the little tyke may need some quiet time before he meets the kids as the whole schedule is pretty exhausting to a little one. Remember he's a baby and not only is he leaving his mom but lots of travelling too. He's probably going to be one tired pup. If I were you, I'd have a letter prepared from Santa, explaining about his gift and perhaps one or two things about Dickens. Do this beforehand as the kids may come across the little guy before you were prepared for introductions. That way, Santa is still the guy that was responsible for the gift. Another scenerio, as the kids are going to be very excited on Christmas morning and will add stress to the pup, is make the introduction Christmas Eve or wait until all the presents are opened Christmas morning then have them meet the little fellow. Kinda hard I know as where do you put the pup in the meantime? You might know some kind neighbors that have a quiet home where he can rest until he meets your kids. Wow are your kids going to be happy! Congrats to you and your family as once you own a sheepie..life as you knew it will never be the same. Your house will be filled with a lot of smiles. Kinda like having kids in some ways. Welcome to the forum! Marianne and the boys |
I think your Christmas Eve idea is great!!! I am so excited for all of you. Can't wait to hear all about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Wishing Dickens a wonderful flight home !
Bet he is watching this inflight movie http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... q=sheepdog |
Coongratulations, speedy flight dickens and have a wonderful christmas with your new family. Keep an eye out for Santa and his reindeer while you are in the air |
Yay for Dickens and that IS a good video for a sheepdog flight! |
Since the little fellow may make his displeasure known with whining/etc for the first night or so, keeping Dickens a secret until Christmas morning may be a lost cause. I agree with everyone else that an overnight in a neighbor's home would not be a good idea. In addition, you might want to keep the neighbor as a friend and leaving a very tired and scared puppy in a strange place overnight is not how to keep friends.
Just my two cents... Merry Christmas to all (and especially to Dickens) |
I agree; Dickens is coming directly home from the airport; the breeder is putting a letter from Santa Claus packed on top of Dickens' crate, addressed to the boys. We're going to get Dickens home (with the kids out of the house) and try to get him settled a bit before bringing the kids in to greet him- sort of.... look what Santa dropped off while you were out! I like the idea about explaining that Santa dropped Dickens off early because he was worried it would be too cold in his sleigh for a little puppy and that he'll be back later with the other presents....
I'll have a full report after the intros and will take plenty of pics; should be great; the breeder has been fantastic. |
Welcome Dickens And I also loved the santa story, your kids are going to be so excited Can't wait to see the pics |
