Prince is teething on me the wife and kids. What is a good way to stop him from nipping or using us for chew toys? James |

Do a search for nipping and biting. You'll find lots of posts on that topic-- it's a popular one! |
REALLY popular! As herding dogs they instinctively use their mouths. I would advise you to cosntantly have a toy on hand that you can put in his mouth and PRAISE him for chewing on!! |
This as mentioned is common. Chauncey was...errr...is a nipper. BUT he is also a kisser. It has helped when he nips to yell ouch, and then ask for kisses and reward with praise and a butt scratch. Kathy
BTW....they'll do anything for a bum scratch |
I have to dissagree with the butt scratch statement ...
and i tryed the screaming ouch and pulling away and ignoring my pooch until she gave kisses. but it didnt work. i also tried holding her mouth shut whenever she tried to bite no such luck there either... SOO i tried the trusty shove your whole hand in her mouth till she backs off ... yay ... it worked ... at first ... i think what really turned her off of biteing my family and myself was the day we fought back it sounds like a very cruel thing ... but truely it's not ment to ... sadie bit me ... i would grab her by the scroff and give her a flick under the chin... and tell her "BAD" eventually she got it ... and now she only bites at footballs and stuffed ducks... OH and if you are wearing a sweater a million times too big in the sleaves and they are dangleing she tends to try to play tug with them ... and every once in a while those sharp teeth get away from her |

Well you were lucky there, sorry but I do have to comment about that technique, it might of worked for you, BUT a lot of the time it can backfire and makes a dog bite more, out of fear/defense and anyone putting a hand near them in the future can be at higher risk of being bitten by the dog as the dog is only working on a natural instinct to protect themselves. Positive re-inforcement is the way to go. Re-direct the biting to other things, like a toy, then praise them for that, it does get better when those darn spikey baby teeth go. Be consistent when pup does nip you with an OUCH or squeal then into the gob goes a chew toy, when pups interest in biting that rather then you then always PRAISE puppy for that. Never scold a puppy for inappropriate behaviour, re-direct and then praise them for doing what you want them to do, they are a smart breed, even though they can act like clowns, but gentle/positive consistent training techniques work so well for them and they do catch on quickly, as they are a breed that really wants to love & please you. |
