Signals to go Potty

Fozzie is very good about telling us he needs to go potty. He used to go downstairs and paw at the door, then he graduated to standing in front of us with his eyes wide open and barks loudly when asked what he wanted.

Well, lately the barking has been proceeded by humping Mommy's leg. Mommy tells him to get off, he does, and then barks. What's up with this lovely behavior?

He is asserting himself. Humping is often a behavior to show dominance. The best thing to do is gently but consistently re direct his behavior.
I know it's a dominance thing, but why before he has to go poop? He knows I let him out if he barks at me or goes to the door. I tell him "off" and he listens. Then I let him out once he barks, but I'm so worried that I'm reinforcing the behavior by letting him out after humping me. I don't want to create a monster!
HAHAHAHAAHAH, it's a MAN THING. Men always feel more MANLY before they sit on the throne!!
I see it as dominance related - in that he signals you and you get up and let him out. He has the power to make you move and do something that he asked for.

He is turning into a rebellious teenager, no more mommys baby.
that is quite frankly one of the strangest things i've ever heard ...

but then again ... they are OES and OES isnt really dog ... it's more ... alian
My new rule is...if you hump me, you get nothing. That applies to the hubby as well... Just kidding, Stevie. Well, no not really. Oops this is a family site :D
    Oh MY TOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!
I will have to share this with Todd - and show him he's not the only one   .
Pee signal: Mo will stand and stare at my husband......who is usually asleep and doen't notice. Finally she'll put her chin on his footstool or even his knee. If that doesn't work she relies on me to whack him, "Take your girl out for a pee."

Fox, the old man, gets a very concerned look on his face, but with him you can't wait long or you'll be cleaning up a poop trail to the door.

I've tried training them to ring a bell, but my husband can't hear a bell...it's easier for me to use a hand signal.......swat my husband to wake him up.

Now I like that Potty training technique 8)

Thanks for the idea. :D
Okay.. yesterday when I read this.. I BURST out laughing.....in my mind I pictured Fozzie HUMPING your leg.. mommmmmy... need..hump, hump. to go.. hump, hump, hump...so I thought I would respond later when I DIDN'T think it was the funnest thing I heard all day...

Well it's the next day.. and I still think it's HILARIOUS.....

I don't have a suggestion for ya. Oh.. yes I do.. could you take a picture the next time he does it...

Brenda (it's been awhile since I had a puppy in the house)......

PS.. I love Fozzie....
I'm glad you guys think this is so funny :D

I'll keep the camera hanging around my neck until I get a picture
Laughing here! Picturing Fozzie politely asking Stacy to let him out to potty ....well, polite as he thinks it is!

And it works...! Yes, he has you well-training, Stacy...You did good at teaching him what works

Fozzie is letting you know that he wants to go out. That is try...you can think of it as a dominant behavoir if you want to, which it could be, but he is telling you something and you are doing it...

Personally I don't let my dogs tell me when they want to go out. I control all the resources in the house, including the door. I put them out when I decide it is time....and on a rainy day that is about 4 times a day. That way they know that it is potty time, not play time.

Perhaps you might want to take control over the potty duty time. Fozzie is old enough so that you don't need to worry about accidents, so let him wait until YOU decide he goes out. If I were you I would start to ignore his demands. When you know he needs to go you can make him wait a bit longer by ignoring him, then YOU decide to let him go out. Ask him to sit at the door then "release" him outside.
None of my dogs signal in any way when they need to go out... that I've noticed anyway.
I'm not sure humping my leg would be better than nothing though, so maybe no signal is not as bad as I thought.
Joan nearly spit out her tea when I read aloud the bit about the hand signal being swatting your husbnad! LOL
