What in the world would cause that? Jon, who seemed unphased by the howling, suggested they might have heard a siren or something (though I didn't hear anything). So I'm just curious what makes your sheepies howl - or if they ever do. |
|
My OES doesn't but my Komondor does sometimes. He'll hear something and he howls almost like a warning to whatever he heard before he starts barking for real. It scares the heck out of me too because it does always seem like it's in the middle of the night! |
Nope, I have never heard Edgar howl. But then he barely barks. |
Walter howls a lot. He only does it when he hears coyotes outside, or when the birds scream (then they all scream/howl together and its both hilarious and the most horrible noise youve ever heard.) |
Chummie howls when she hears the siren from a fire engine. Never from a police car -- just the fire engine. I think it is beautiful. |
Our first guy was the only sheepie we've ever heard howl! He could "whimper", "speak" and "howl" on command, but only in that order!
You could ask him to whimper repeatedly and he would, but once you told him to speak, he would, but you couldn't get him to whimper again. Likewise, once you asked him to howl, you could get him to do so repeatedly, but he wouldn't whimper or speak anymore. In fact, asking him to whimper would just cause another howl. Mulligan knows a "growl" command and a "speak" command, but has never howled. We've been trying to train it for 2 years. |
Barney's only howled once in the almost 2 years that we've had him. And I can't remember what it was for...scared me to death though! |
here is a video of walter howling i posted a few months ago...

Hahahahah Heather! Sounds like he needs a lozenge! lolol
Great video. |
Carl howls along with the singing sheepdog and when my husband plays the drums but he doesn't do it when the horn players are playing. You'd think the higher pitched sounds would make him do it.
We found out Suzi howls, the first day that she was at the house. I put her in the kennel and left for the show. I was about an hour into grooming when my husband called and just held the phone out for me to hear what was going on. Suzi apparently doesn't like the kennel and howls like a HOUND dog when she is sad. |
Merlin will howl...we found out by accident...kids were singing this awful tune and I started laughing and then Merlin started howling....so I kept saying GOOD BOY SPEAK...so now if I say HELLOOOOOOO or SPEAK in a high pitched voice...Merlin will howl....Avalon just barks..... |
Archie howls. Not often--only when a fire engine goes by with its siren going. It seems to us that Archie is attempting to harmonize with the sounds of the siren. He seems to try to modulate his pitch and tone to 'fit' the sounds of the fire engine as he goes by.
He also squeaks. Sounds like the Tin Man in need of a good oiling. Groans. Moans. Has lots of very varied vocalizations, really. Sherman also squeaks. Merlin never did, and Sophie doesn't. She makes up for it by having a bark that is at just the wrong pitch so that it's very annoying. |
We heard Pepsi howl once.
There were sirens going off and I couldn't figure out who's dog was howling. Then I see Pepsi out back with his muzzle straight up in the air. Peanut used to howl when we lived in NY. We lived off a busy street and every time an ambulance went by he would immitate the noise. It was hysterical. |
Oh yeah, my sheepie HOWLS every time he hears a siren which is almost every day since we live a stone's throw from Main Street in town (and near an assisted living center so the fire and ambulances run in and out most every day).
I live in Tornado alley in Oklahoma so the sirens are tested every Friday at noon and he lets out the longest and loudest howl you can imagine! I think the sirens hurt his ears... |
No but I have one that can scream when she is overexcited
Always wondered what the neighbors think when she goes off with that screeching noise |
Baxter howls when he hears police or fire sirens. Fortunately, we don't hear them too often. And he also likes to sing in chorus with the local coyotes. Unfortunately, that usually happens at about 2:00am!
Cassiopia doesn't howl at anything....YET. Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Sharkey |

http://photos.oes.org/displayimage.php?pos=-5871 OMG....That is toooo funny . Harley is a howler only when we first put him in his crate, but he just heard walter's video and went off !!!! I also have birds and my Blue and gold macaw also went off when he heard the video . I got to go take so aspirin ............ |
OMG That video was too cute I have never heard a sheepie howl before. I wonder if I could teach one of mine to do that Could I be able to teach one of them that? and if so , how or should I say howl ? |
I had a female once that was a VERY good howler-- melodious, even. And a male who could manage a broken howl/bark when he heard a siren.
My current male, Charlie, has takes the cake, though. Whenever two or more people laugh at something really funny, he opens his mouth, leaves it open and something very like human laughter comes out. That makes everyone laugh harder and then Charlie gets really into it. If this goes on long enough his laugh turns into a howl. It's the only time I have heard this dog howl, he never does it to sirens like my previous dogs. You can't tell a good joke in my house without the dog taking over. |
Sadie thinks that she is a basset hound ... she never ever made a noise until she was 17 months old now we cant get her to shut up |

I don't have a video camera but my digital still camera takes short quicktime movie clips with sound. I'll try to capture Charlie in the act. |
Great!
Maybe too, next time a friend is coming over who has a video camera, they could catch the act! I think it would be hilarious to see everyone being convulsed in laughter b/c of Charlie! |
We call it singing at our house!! Once I ask Guinness to sing ,my black lab joins in with his deep song and then my shepherd adds her high song(YOWL!!) and my yellow lab just barks!! My vet thinks I should record it to use on my answering machine!! (I am not that good) Then there are treats for everyone!!! |
Both Maxwell and Miller howl. Mostly just at sirens, etc. But sometimes when I am leaving the house or getting home and at the front door, they howl. They both get each other going..... |
I've never heard a sheepie howl until Heather's video of Walter.
I like it. |
My Winston howls when the answering machine is on speaker and someone calles and leaves a message. I really ger a kick out of hearing him.He is the first dog that I have owned that howls. |
Most of mine have not been howlers.......but now we have Jack
He came here not a howler, but Harry introduced him to the joys of vocalizing at sirens, neighbor's dogs, etc. I cring because the boys will run to the west neighbor and "call" their dogs over for a song fest.....at 10 pm poop time and first pee, 6 a.m. They make a great duo, loud, but melodious. Glacier the Pyr will bark in her very deep woof, adding bass to the set. The other day Harry was out near the gate howling and Jack decided he'd rather stay on the porch......OMG! What a perfect amphitheater for him.......I hope he doesn't decide he sounds better on the porch and starts using it regularly. |
thanks for letting me hear him howl that was a great video |
Here is Charlie laughing/howling. We haven't had a good laugh in the house for awhile so my wife "faked" it. As a result, Charlie didn't give his best laughing performance. And I messed up the video. I'll try to capture the real thing when we have some company over. Until then, here's Charlie....

I can't get the link to work for me. |
Oh, that was fun! Love a dog who will talk and laugh with his uprights. |
Both of my OES howl when the train comes by....we got our first OES,Stella Blue when our lab Jenny was at the end of her life....Jenny howled every time the train went by.....so we get Stella and her and Jenny were playing in the back yard.....here comes a train......Jenny starts howling and Stella cocks her little head ,looks at Stella for a second or two....then raises her head and starts the cutest howl you ever heard.
We laughed sooo much.....but then a month later we had to have our beloved Jenny PTS.....the next time a train comes by, Stella looks for Jenny (this broke our heart) and then raises her little head and lets out a beautiful howl......so Jenny lives on everytime Stella howls.....Stella is 9 years old now and taught our other OES Maxwell to howl when he was a pup.....then neighbours on each side got dogs and they howl too.....to other neighbours it may seem annoying, but to me, it is Jenny's Symphony. |
I couldn't get it to work either . |
Our recent Beardie rescue howls when a siren passes, and Dusty, our Sheltie rescue howls when I leave for work...heartbreaking...but it is a beautiful sound. A friend of mine had a white Shepherd that would "sing along" when she sang. |

http://photos.oes.org/displayimage.php?pos=-10286 That's very funny!! I've never seen a sheepie laugh/howl like that before now. I have a bird that laughes when you do, but the dogs don't find that amusing. |
