pennhip or ofa/ovc?

I just wanted to hear some input on the different methods of getting hips cleared. I have been looking into them and they all seem awful....lol... but necessary if I want to breed Dancer some day. From what I can gather, pennhip is tooting it's own horn, saying it is more accurate, but how can that be when essentially they grade on a curve? In my opinion, either they are good or not. Also, pennhip methods seem more intrusive, it seems to me damage can be caused by the amount of manipulation needed for this method. The regular method can cause damage as well, especially if not done properly, and the anesthetic always presents a risk. I think I have found a vet who will only mildly sedate the dog instead of knocking her right out. Have any of you had any experiences with any of the methods available?

Hi Willow,

I am still of course still learning, but I think my husband and I are leaning a little toward Pennhip. One of the main reasons I like about it is that they grade with other dogs of the same breed. I have been around my Mom's rotts and looking at them walk and run they have such a different gait and hip structure. I am not really up on the idea of muscle relaxers and not at all on anesthsia though. I also don't know how long Pennhip has been researched so that they have enough data to back up what they are saying. Here is one website that I liked, but it is really biased to Pennhip, but some of what it said made common sense to me. I am thinking of interviewing a few vets to get thier opinions of both processes. This is something I don't want to rush into. I would like your opinion of this website. www.canismajor.com/dog/pennhip1.html Stormi
I took a look, and while it is a well put together article, I still don't feel pennhip is safe. Drugging the dog with muscle relaxers and putting under complete anesthesia is not the normal for the dog, so to me this would suggest not a normal comparison for joint laxity. Also, they take many more xrays, exposing the developing eggs that may someday be fertilized, to more radiation than is needed, JIMHO. The pennhip method clearly requires more physical manipulation of the dog, which would no doubt bruise the insides of the animal, causing some pain afterwards, and possibly damage. And, since it is graded on a curve, regardless if it is by breed, then what happens if several breeders with dogs who had bad hips were done, skewing the curve. How do we then know if our dog, who may score quite high in the percentiles, really does have good hips, or just happened to be better than the average, which could be skewed in any direction?
Anyway, to each his own I suppose, maybe I will feel more comfortable with it when it is not so new, or maybe they will come up with an entirely different method, requiring neither drugs nor manipulation, which would be best. Let me know which you choose and how it works out for you Stormi! :) I would love to hear from actual experiences.
