There Is Something Wrong With Panda's Eye :O(

Hi Everyone,

As you know I was concerned about Panda's photos where that weird "gleam" showed in the same eye.

Although I had his eyes checked out last year while he was under sedation, I was told his eyes were normal. Speaking with my vet today and going over his chart, she reassured me nothing was out of the ordinary. Thanks to your advice and my "gut feeling" there was "something", I did contact the vet and expressed my concern once again.

I know when I started speaking of that weird gleam she sorta smiled, not in a mean way but ahhh I have come across over worried mamas before.

Well it turned out there was absolutely no reflection of light at all from his eye..nada. Various eye test she performed had the same result. The vets office has three vets whom I use all the time and this particular one specializes in eyes. She suspects it could be a detached retina or glaucoma We are referred to an eye specialist for comfirmation and I'll keep you guys posted.

Today the office was open only for emergencies they told me to come down right away and no charge. Then again I have a file down there that is aprox 4 inches thick from various pets over the last 15 years.

Keeping my fingers crossed that Panda will be okay and now I'm back to worrying about my boy. Ironicially, I 've been telling people for the last year at the dog park that Panda is blind in his left eye although the test never proved that. Again, always a gut feeling.

Marianne and the boys

Did more checking online and found out OES may be prone to retinal dysplasia. Poor Panda he already has moderate hip dysplasia.
Not fair! My Panda boy has gone through enough in his life.

poor panda:< I'm glad you trusted your instinct and took him in, you are a very good mom!!
Thanks again everyone.

Since that "something" was wrong was confirmed I feel a lot of sadness and I think my hunch that he is blind in that eye is correct. I'm also angry that I didn't listen to what my gut told me last year and insist on more test.
I don't want to diagnose him but from the literature I've read, it can easily happen to his other eye. That's my greatest fear.

I truly believe in gut feelings, mothers instinct or whatever you want to call it as the same thing occurred when my upright son became ill at 6 days old. Both the doctor, and the pediatrician I insisted he send me to, both told me that they suspected my son had colic and I was a experiencing newborn mom jitters.

The six day old baby would scream, draw his tiny legs up and then become limp. That wasn't colic I knew. Not listening to either of them a few hours later I took my son to the hospital. Just in time as he ended up spending six days in intensive care. Even though that little baby had only been with me for six days..I just Knew something wasn't right. He ended up having four surgeries to correct the deformity in his body that wasn't noticable from the outside and had even scored a 10 on his Apgar at birth.

You guys are so right..guess it's worth looking foolish if it turns out to be nothing but best to follow that gut feeling.

The optomologist will be calling me this week to schedule an appt. I really appreciate the good thoughts and comments.

Marianne, will keep our paws and fingers crossed for Panda. Big Hugs. :ghug:
Marianne are you sure it is not PRA as that has been detected in the breed worldwide.

Just looked at Bries eye certifications and this is just two listed that they check for in an eye exam. The other one retinal dysplasia is seen earlier in a young dog, PRA starts from 4-5 onwards. Retinal Dysplasia is also very rare in OES.

Retinal Atrophy

Progressive retinal atrophy is a degenerative disease of the retinal visual cells which leads to blindness. It is a autosomal inherited trait affected young Old English Sheepdogs in the first 4-5 years of life. Secondary cataracts can develop late in the progression of the disease. No treatment is available and dogs should not be bred.

Retinal Dysplasia (Retinal Folds)

This condition is rare in the Old English Sheepdog. The mode of inheritance is unknown. When seen in puppies the condition can partially or completely resolve with maturity. The significance is also unknown.

I hope it is not either, but if it turns out to be not such a good diagnosis Panda will still lead a good & happy life if his vision is affected.

Hugs Kiddo and keep us posted as to how he goes, stay relaxed yourself when you take him for the eye exam and panda should relax for you too then.

xxLisa
Hugs for you and Panda, we will be waiting to hear. The GOOD news is that if Panda does have a problem, he's got the BEST Mom in the world to take care of him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck Marianne and Panda!!

Keep upi the vigilent attitude and make sure that opthamologist knows Panda's whole story. Every little piece of information helps to personalize you and your kid and makes the doctor "want" to help you more. It keeps you from being just a case or a number and they become more involved.
I am sorry that sweet Panda may have more challenges ahead. You are amazing to have noticed and followed up on this. Doesn't sound like waiting made the situation any worse. For what it is worth, I have a friend whose dog went blind very young and she says he has lead a very long, happy life full of fun. She said most people don't even realize that he is blind! I hope Panda gets some good news. Thinking of you both. . .
Poor Panda. I'm sorry that you guys have to go through more stuff. Our thoughts are with you.
Marianne -I'm really sorry to hear that Panda is facing more difficulties. I hope that the visit with the eye specialist will give you the answers you want.

One of the ladies on the board of Tarheel OES rescue just had her boy, Blue, undergo surgery for a detached retina a few weeks ago. He is recovering nicely although the vet says it could be several months before they know if he'll have sight in that eye. Still, they remain hopeful.

Keeping our fingers crossed for you & Panda boy.
Panda girl sends her special kisses to Panda boy....May everything be okay!
Marianne,
I am sorry to hear about Panda's eyes.
I do hope it is something that is treatable.
Big hugs to you and Panda!
Thoughts and prayers to you and Panda!!! Keep us posted.
You guys are truly the best and I appreciate all the well wishes from everyone!

I made an appt today with the eye specialist. As he's in another municipality I have to wait until Dec 27 for the consultation. Lisa, thanks for that additional info as I am just getting more confused reading so much stuff on eyes. Glad to hear that retinal dysplaisia is rare and perhaps it's something else. I'm going to stop reading and worry myself silly.

Thanks again everyone!

Marianne and my very special Panda boy

PS The test was done with Panda sitting at my side..he was such a good boy!! Although the vet double muzzled him, while he didn't try to bite..his top lip was quivering a lot. I know he was stressed but again each month he gets better with stuff like this as he did continue to sit at my side. Another milestone for him!! whoo hooo!
For those of you not familiar with his story , Panda was a rescue out of Asia whom had suffered abuse and is always continuing to make great progress. I hope I'm not making him sound like a monster as he's the gentlest dog I've ever had, just any kind of "restraint" something simple as holding his head in a "hold position" would make him stress big time.
Wow -

Poor Panda boy. I'm glad you took him into your own and went the the vet again - wow. Thanks for keeping us up-dated and give him some hugs from us in FL - :ghug:
Poor Panda...
I hope you get good news at his vet appt later on. At least he seems not to be in any pain?
Poor you guys!!! I hope Panda is OK! He's such a sweet boy!!

We are all rooting for you!!

Nic
Marianne,

I am just now catching up. Hugs to you and Panda - what a brave boy he is!

Marianne and the boys
I had a dog with glaucoma a few years ago (she passed, but not from that). We had a cycloblation (sorry, it is probably missed spelt) done on her. As it turned out, the glaucoma was causing terrible migraines. When kids were running around, she would come to my side and turn into a "statue". Perhaps this is why Panda needs to be restrained sometimes, his head hurts!
Thanks for the info Guest and I'll keep that in mind. Although Panda has always disliked any kind of restraint..something like having his collar held for example, or a hand on his back for grooming. What I've noticed is his increased barking at shadows or what appears to be nothing at all. It may be "floaters" that I've read that sometimes glaucoma causes. Did your dog experience this?
