Personally, I would think a wipe would make them gooey and more sticky (clinging to their hair once wet).
I don't remember if you work or not, but I just check the eyes every time I touch Yuki. I remember getting them 3-4 times a day! For some reason, she doesn't get them as bad anymore, but getting them routinely preventing any huge ones or any sticking to her fur. It's sick, but I get disappointed when I go for her eyes and she doesn't have any. Then again , people in chat thought I was sick that I pop Mr. J's zits. Yep, I said it. And I enjoy it (after a year of him training me). |
I just use my bare hands to remove eye goobers. Anything else just seems to make them difficult to grab or smears them around. Chewie gets his face - eyes/muzzle/chin area washed nearly everyday. |
First off are the eye goobers a normal colour, if they are on the darkish yellow side and quite a lot of it sticky into the corner of the eye, then you might have a bit of conjunctivitis there.
If they are wet sticky goobers and not dry and crusty to remove with TP or your fingers, then dip a cotton wool ball into tepid water with some salt in it, Saline Solution, wipe from the top of the eye in one sweep to the corner and presto the sticky booger is gone. Then get a dry cotton wool ball and one sweep the same way finishing at the corner of the eye just to dry it. Stops tear staining doing that for the wet gooby ones. |
We all know how and where i do mine....nothing else needs to be said.. |
Yup, no words necessary.

Thanks Jill for the photo reminder...lol |
Well, at least you have somewhere handy to put the eye booger......... |
Mine like to eat theirs
If I don't get pick them out daily they lick each other's eyes. GROSS! When I see eye grooming going on I know it's time to clean them. |
We actually call them eye boogers but what's in a name right?
Anyway, if the boogers are dry most of the mass can be removed by drawing two opposing finger nails from the root of the booger down the associated hair until they come free, Michele is particualry good at this - much better than I am. If the boogers are still soft this will probably just result in smearing them along the hair. To get the last of the booger, or remove the soft ones I like to use a very fine comb and carefully comb out the associated hair a number of times. The stain left behind can be cleaned up by careful use of #1 All Systems Whitening Gel. It is quite thick so it can be CAREFULLY applied to a cooperative dog close to the eye with a Q-tip or similar appliance without actually touching the eyeball. |
i ave 3 sets of eyes seems like every morning they have them !! |
I do sneak attacks several times a day. I grab her chin, brush back her hair and grab the gunk with my thumb and forefinger. It takes less than 10 seconds each time. Izzie isn't a fan |
Chewie just loves the attention - in fact all of them do. They all whine until it is there turn to get "picked" on! Silly dogs. |
Yuki never has tearstains, thank goodness!! I think my maltese has enough for both of them though. |
I have to be honest, and say that Sadie absolutly dispises when i grope at her eye "guck" with my fingures ... but i do it anyway because it's simple and really i can do it whenever i notice.
but, when i was working as a AHTA at a vet hospital here we used a washcloth with warm water ( acctually almost scalding water ) and did a quick sweep across the eye. ( this works esspecially well on cats ) but for sheepies i find it only works if the water is hot enough .. once it gets cold it just mashes them in worse. |
