Hi! Check out the crate section for some good tips, but this will start you off.
If Prince is a puppy, he won't be able to hold it all night. Clean the crate out thoroughly (to get rid of the smell of pee). Next I would try to section a part of it off so Prince has an area big enough to turn around in and feel cozy in, but not big enough he can pee at one end and sleep at the other. When I brought Bingley home at 8 weeks I went to bed at about 10 and set the alarm for about 2 am. I woke him up at this time and brought him out to go potty. After he did I praised the heck out of him and then put him back to bed until around 6 am. The next week we moved the alarm a half hour later, the next week another half hour, etc. To have him enjoy his crate give him a treat each time he goes in. You can figure out his favorite foods and give him some every time he goes into his crate. Practice throughout the day (or on a weekend) having crate time while you are near him so he doesn't always associate crate time with you leaving! I would limit the amount of water Prince gets before bedtime to help him "hold it" while he's sleeping, and if possible I would put the crate near you at night if it isn't already. Pups love to be part of the pack! Hope this helps and good luck! I can't wait to see pics! |
I have tried that but he does not sleep he just cries and barks I left him for over a hour and a half thinking he would stop. should I just leave him and he will get use to it. |
Been there done that ,got the T-shirt ...LOL.....
We went through the same thing with Harley . He would keep us up all night. Then I tried a small radio on the floor next to his kennel . It worked GREAT! Also I keep his kennel where he can't see us. He is in the next room over from ours. I also do just like Emily mentioned , I give treats to "Kennel Up" . I just say Kennel up and he runs to his kennel knowing he is getting a treat. Good luck............. Antoinette |
the crate and sleeping was the easy part for me and Duchess, the crate is beside my bed and the first nite I put her into it along with her blanket that she brought with her and her new teddybear , I laid on the bed and read and after about 10 minutes of crying and lifting her head to make sure I was still there off she went to sleep untill 6am next morn and no mess in the crate, now she goes in and settles right down but we are still working on nipping and potty training LOL |
I remember the frustration of the barking and crying all night. It gets better, I promise!
How old is Prince? |
I thought I was going to lose my mind. It was so frustrating. But keep at it. It will get better.
We wouldn't feed water to Edgar after 7:00. That really helps with accidents. As for the barking we wouldn't take him out of his crate and we would go out and tell him hush. We also draped a blanket over the crate to make it seem more den like. What finally finished him barking and taught him hush was this sweet toy called the AirZooka. A coworker loaned it to us. What it is is a big silly looking kids toy that will send a slight woosh of air and make a scary plastic crinkley noise. So when he would whine and bark we would say hush and then shoot at him with it. Good luck. Keep up with it. It will get better. |
Thank you for all the advice. Prince is 10 weeks old I thought he maybe scared of his creat because he had to fly from one end of canada to the other about 10 hours. When my pics get posted you will see that Prince did not have his tail docked the breader i got him from did not belive in it. |
Just had a look at your pics and Prince is a beauty |
My dogs like their crates covered. When they were pups we started this and it seemed to quiet them down quite a bit. I also put in a rubbermaid bin upside down to make the big crate seem smaller...this stopped the messing in the crate. You will have to get up several times in the night to potty your baby...they can't hold it in until at least 16 weeks old.
Your Prince is a cutie! |
Prince is geogeous! The white tip on his tail is so cute!
Another thing you can try is a stuffed kong in the crate. They have smaller puppy kongs, which are made of a softer rubber. If you stuff it with kibble, cheese, peanut butter, it will keep Prince occupied long enough for him to hopefully realize that being in his crate alone isn't so scary. You can also add water or low sodium beef/chicken stock and freeze it so it will last longer for Prince - make sure to plug the small hole in the bottom! A kong stuffed with yummy things will automatically reward Prince for being calm and quiet in his crate. It will get better, and it will be worth it. At bedtime for the first few nights Barkley was very upset. We had his crate beside the bed and would talk sweetly and sing to him for half an hour or more while lying in bed to calm him. You could also try that. I think some people also try ticking clocks nearby or something warm (hot water bottle) in the crate, but we never tried any of that. |
Prince is gorgeous! I'm sure the crate is scary because of his flight experience, but he'll get over that. And it took Bailey at least two weeks to stop crying at night when we first got him. We used a beach towel to cover half of Bailey's crate to give it the "den" feeling. If it's a big crate, use a divider to make it smaller - that will help cut down on the potty accidents. Find a super special treat that Prince gets only when he goes in his crate - we use those stinky Tbone steak treats. When Bailey hears me open that jar, he heads to the crate! The Kong is a good idea too, another way to associate a good feeling with the crate.
Also, during the day leave the crate door open and leave his toys in there. If Prince can go in and out to get his toys, he'll get more comfortable with it. Good Luck! He's such a cutie! |

I think what Sue means is leave the crate door open when youre home Those are all fantastic ideas! It will get better...we promise!! I think he is adorable too!! |
Welcome to the forum to you and to Prince!
He's such a cutie! Those eyes are spectacular... Are you James or Chevonne? Perhaps you'd like separate user names? |

What an ADORABLE puppy!! Welcome. You may be in for a couple nights of limited sleep but I think you do have to let him cry it out. Comforting things like the radio or TV, a really snuggly bed and making sure you take him to potty at regular intervals will help.
The probkem with going to him when he cries is that it reinfoces the behavior and he learns that if he cries someone will come running. |
Your dog is adorable! immediately thought of willowsprite's new puppy because of the ears!
I always kept the crate in a room that I could barely hear the barking. I could still hear it (not something I wanted), but it was low enough that I could still sleep. After losing some hair from stress, the barking does go away! |
Just re-read my post, I should have said a COUPLE WEEKS, not a COUPLE nights. It can take time!!!!!!!!! |
He is sooooo beautiful. I wish Harley had a tail ....LOL
Good luck... It does get better...... |
Your pup is a cutie. Good luck with your training - you have gotten lots of good advice so far! |
I like to thank you all the good advise. As you can see with a tail he is not for show but for love. I did get Prince from Sue the breeder you all were talking about in post a few months back. from Sack Canada. So far she has been great to deal with and I have no problems telling othersabout here.

What a cutie The only suggestion I can think of, if you have a blanket or soft toy that was with mom or the litter and has their scent on it, place it in the crate with him.....it does seem to calm them a little, Kathy |
I gave my breeder a blanket for Merlin to have while he was with her. When I got him the blanket came too...Merlin would wet in the crate. After a few times washing the blanket because he peed on it I clued in...maybe I should leave the blanket out...he never peed in the crate again...so each dog is different...you have to try and see what your pup likes. |
One of the things that work with Wade was to make the crate a little smaller by putting a Coleman cooler in it. He won't pee if he has to lay in it. He only needs enough room to turn around, stand up and lay down. I used a crate in the bedroom and one in the kitchen to get thru the awful stages. I remember one time carrying him downstairs to go out in the morning and he "sprung a leak" on the way down. Eventually I eliminated all the crates and things are fine now. Wile my 9 year old would love a crate to lounge around in, but the house is to small.......... |
I have never had a problem with Laika right from the beginning with the crate. I still haven't heard that dog cry. I did put a ticking clock by the crate the first night. Plus I have her crate in my bed room with it pointing towards my bed so she can see me. I don't know if this might have been a factor but I didn't coddler her in the beginning.
Good Luck Jamie and we will get those half-siblings together over the holidays! We should get all the Dartmouth and surrounding area sheepies together! What fun!! |
