A Ryobi 12 inch drill press.
For any guy - a Home Depot gift card. (Just in case he already has a 12 inch Ryobi drill press.) My husband recommends any Ryobi cordless tool for the men in your life. |
For the guys: I always go with gift certificate to lowes, home depot, or best buy.
for the gals: I always go for a bamboo plant because no one ever has one, but find it unique, the easiest thing in the world to take care of, and something typical of a korean girl to give them. or sephora gift card - EVERY PRINCESS LOVES SEPHORA! or food! (anything on oprah's favorite things list is safe)! edit: I was going to do a gift certificate through amazon.com this year for my SIL, but when I went to buy one... they had bad reviews. trouble using it, etc So, I bought a nordstrom giftcard for her! |
I usually go with gift cards of some sort like Barnes & Noble or movie tickets. Then there is a local victorian shop that whips together quick gift baskets so I have them pack the gift cards in there too along with some gourmet foods, coffee, tea, chocolate, etc. |

My personal experience has been the opposite. I have receieved (and used) and sent thousands of dollars in Amazon Gift Certificates without a problem. In fact, I had once found one that had "expired", called customer service and they re-activated it for me.
Just my own experience, others may have had different issues. |
For my step mom (who is 93 years, but acts like she's only 75!) I have a really hard time. One year we got her Godiva (sugar free) chocolates. She loved that. But last year I hit on a great idea. I print up a certificate for lunch and theatre matinee of her choice in the coming year. Last year, we took her to see State Fair at a theatre in the round. It was a wonderful day, and it gives her something to look forward to, and....I don't even have to step inside a store! |
I like going to Brookstone and choosing whatever oddball thing that catches my eye that I would never buy for myself. I like the alcohol breathalyzer (great for the holiday season), car wash equipment, this hilariously oversized tv remote. . . This CD/DVD repair thing works great and who doesn't need that? The talking frame is sweet for a more personal gift (assuming you fill it in).
For hostess type gifts, I like wine chillers or fancy wine openers, kitchen towels, candles, luxury food items from Williams Sonoma (peppermint bark!) |

I'm not sure what your question is. Amazon.com carries lots of different stuff, usually at a fair price, but you can frequently find it cheaper if you scour the web and will work with smaller merchants. Sometimes they run specials in different departments that will give you, say, $25 off a $125 purchase in a particular department.
In general, their prices aren't bad. Also they have Free Super Saver Shipping on a gazillion things, you just can't get it next day. Take a look around here: http://shop.oes.org for some ideas of what you can get. I'm not sure if they have a regular by mail gift certificate thing, but you could have it emailed to yourself and print it out (it has a code in the email that is used to redeem it online). |
I did save about $30 total on the DVDs I bought for my family members for christmas using Amazon! And shipping was free! That was really nice, since all the stores around ere were muh more expensive for the titles (gft boxes) I wanted to buy |
