First time on this site. I have an almost 10 yr old spayed female sheepdog. She is having some intermittent bladder control problems e.g. pillow is wet when she gets up, some dripping while walking. Vet tried (I think doxycycline hyclate 100 mg) but didn't help any. Was wondering if any one had suggestions or knew of meds that helped their dog with a similiar problem. Thanks |

Spayed females tend to suffer from incontinence as they get older due to a lack of female hormones helping to strengthen their bodies.. sort of like normal females..
i would take her back to the vet and see about another drug that contains hormones in it in order to help boost her bladder wall.. we had similar problems with one of our previous lasses.. there is hope.. just remember dont get upset at her.. poor lass.. i found this site that might be of more help and lists some medications you could ask your vet about.. hope all works out.. http://www.vet4petz.com/articles/urinar ... inence.htm |
Dear Tanks
Thank you so much for your response. I checked the other site you mentioned and feel more educated on the subject than I did before. We pulled out the last of the carpeting a couple of years ago, so when Sophie has an accident cleanups are relatively easy and stress free. I'll let you know how we make out and thanks again for your help. Toby first |
We use Proin for our girl. 50 mg tab, which I believe is based on estrogen, every few days. Really seems to clear up the problem. |
I've heard that proin does the trick although I don't know from personal experience - just recommendations. |
I had a sheepie that was given phenylpropanolamine. Or something very close to that word. The vet would know. She became very swollen in the tummy/female area and I immediately stopped the medicine. It did the trick. It triggers something in her and she had a few intermittent problems after that over the years but it took care of the major incontinence. I remember we did some holistic stuff as well, but I can't remember specifics.
I hope you find an answer that works well for your dog. |
Thank you. I'm so glad I found this site! |
My old girl was on Stilbestrol, which is a hormone replacement, worked wonders, she started leaking/dripping at 10 then started on that and no problems with her till we lost her at 14. |
