thing is with the worms/parmecium and lice her belly is all messed up.. she is having a hard time keeping stuff down.. is the anything i can do to help calm her stomach.. i know in humans its ginger.. but no way am i going to try that on her.. i just worry that she is going to get weak and get worse ( i am a worry wart when it comes to my pups and my kids ) i have some wet puppy food and am going to try a small teaspoon of that for her later.. i suppose with all the meds n such tho she really just needs rest.. as i said tho.. i worry.. so i am wondering if there is anything else i might be able to do for her to help her out abit more.. thanks |

Some people on the forum might be able to recommend a raw/natural diet for a little while. For example: rice, chicken, etc.
Maybe someone can pipe in with recommendations? Cooked meat or raw? I would advise you call your vet and ask what they would recommend. |
she just saw the vet this morning who gave me some science diet canned soft food to try her on.. she isnt overly interested in food at all tho.. she said the paramecium infestation in her gut tho could be a result of undercooked or raw chicken/meat..
i am prolly being a silly ninny and she prolly only needs to sleep and fight this thing along with her meds.. as i said tho.. i just worry alot =/ |
Canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) will help firm up her stools. Normally, I'd suggest stopping feeding for a day but in a puppy, I don't know if that's such a good idea... |
I definitely would NOT feed raw right now... that puppy's immune system is taxed to the limit and could not handle more bacteria.
I would just stick to one kind of food, whatever the vet gave you. Less on her tummy the better. Lots of water, and as much canned food as she will eat as often as you can offer it to her. Hopefully the meds will help get all this under control soon. The pup is a little young to have left mum, and being sick as well is not good for such a young pup Does the breeder know the puppy is so sick? They should be aware of these problems as the rest of the pups are going to be infected as well. |
i sent a mail informing her of Ursa's problems and suggested she check all her other dogs as left untreated this can kill pups...
just gave her the revolution medicine to kill the lice.. had to treat our other dog n cat as well.. now all the animals mad at me and the kids as well cause they were told to not bother them for a few days.. she still isnt interesed in food.. i shall keep offering it to her tho in hopes.. lol.. i am sooo starting off on the right foot now arent i |
First off, if she's been vomiting, 12 hours with not food or water whatsoever. If it continues, you'll need to go to the vet for subcutaneous fluids to prevent dehydration.
Once the 12 hours has passed, you can feed boiled white rice and BOILED very lean hamburger. Boiled to remove the fat. That's my recommendation, and my vet's and lots of folks on here, too. |

I've found that the Foreman grill works pretty well too, particularly when you're cooking the meat well-done. |
Hope your little baby is all right and on the way to good health.
My concern and can someone answer this for me is dosing revolution for the lice on a pup that is under 8 weeks of age? I am really surprised too that a breeder would let a pup leave to go to a new home under 8 weeks of age and with worms and lice, obviously the pup did not have a health check before going to a new home. I hope your baby is going to be alright. Take the advice too on the rice and cooked meat, no fat till her system returns to normal. Her whole system is under a lot of strain at the moment for one so little. And please if the vomitting has not subsided soon and she is not drinking or taking anything orally then she will need to be at the vet on a drip to keep her re-hydrated. Being so young don't let it go on for too long as the risk is high there. |
update.. had to admit her to vets =(
she started getting dehydrated and wouldnt keep her medications down. Vet is putting her on iv's and a catheter in the hopes of "jump starting" her. Ursa wouldnt eat and stopped drinking. i ended up having to spritz her mouth with pedialite to help keep her going.. Kennel owner says none of her other puppies are infected.. i told her to double check. vet says she has.. round worms ( i could have swore she said pin yesterday but atm its all worms)/ giardia / possible scapies and dog lice at this point i dont know wether to be mad or cry my head off.. i am just so worried for Ursa..all this has really made the whole family really upset.. was supposed to be a happy time.. and this is what happened.. we just want our puppy healthy..=( have to call the vet back at 4 today to check in on her.. will let you all know.. |
Thanks for the update. I have my fingers crossed for you and Ursa. |
Good luck to you and Ursa!!! Positive thoughts headed your way.
Get her through this, keep good records of the bills and make sure the vet does very detailed reports. Definitely ask the vet to document, document, document and then give a copy to the breeder. Round worms are one thing, they can hide out and reinfect puppies so sometimes a reworming is necessary. As for everything else, that's a lot of stuff for a young pup who hasn't been anywhere to contract since you got her. Keep us updated. |
i feel for you i rescued mine at 6 weeks he has had all the parisites and still to this day 2 months later he still doesn't have a real hard stool, listen to all they give good advise here good luck |
next update.. got off phone with vet abit ago...
she is now clear of the garidia and worms.. but there was blood in her stool and as a precaution the vet started her on parvo meds.. She said she would treat her symptom by symptom. She said her white blood cell count was abit low and that and the blood had her worried so she went ahead with the parvo antibiotics just to be on the safe side. I know that the worms n garidia can also cause blood in stool so i am soo hoping its just that and poor Ursa doesnt have parvo.. i have seen what that nasty crap can do to puppies. we had a dog years agoand she lost 2 whole litters to it.. its such a cruel virus. anywho.. all of us and the vet are hoping n praying that she starts to pick up now that she is free of the parasites and that it isnt parvo and we are praying hard.. crying alot too but meh.. im a softie.. what can i say .. next check up at 9:30 am.. i am never going to get to sleep tonight with worry .. trying so hard to be positive just really hard atm.. =/ |
I know you said that you talked to the breeder but please call her again and tell her about the treatment for parvo-- even if it is just a precaution at this point. As you mentioned, if all the puppies have it, it could be disastrous. |
i have Butters hon.. been telling her everything and like you all suggested i asked my vet to keep a detailed record of everything as well... what she does with the info tho on all sides of this is down to her at this point.. |
Good deal. I know you mentioned you had and I was hoping that you were keeping in touch. Very smart. |
Best wishes with your little baby, we are thinking of you both and hope she gets better soon.
So glad to hear she is at the vet keeping re-hydrated. Belly rubs for your little princess and hugs for you. |
I am just catching up on your poor Ursa. I hope she does better today and gets a negative dx on the parvo. Hang in there! |
Poor Ursa! I hope she's cured of all this nastiness soon. |
she made it throught the night.. but she is still not out of the woods yet.. my husband and i are going down at lunch to see her.. then i plan on
Vet said if we hadnt have gotten her she would have died in a day or 2.. Alan keeps saying it was like we were meant to get her.. starting to look that way.. anyways.. her stools are turning from that yellow/greenish nasty stuff to a brown and since yesterday afternoon there has been no blood in them ( hoping thats a good sign) .. she still hasnt eaten.. they are keeping her on the iv's and such till they make sure she is 100% better .. think they just worried about that small chance it sparvo.. so am i tbh.. breeder wrote me saying that none of her pups have parvo and she has had no reports of parvo from those sold recently.. making it through the night was a big step.. but doc says she is still touch n go at this point.. they want her in for several more days to make sure she is back to being a healthy lass.. and i wouldnt have it any other way.. i want my baby bear back for christmas |
Hi all. I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Alan, proud hubby of Tanks (aka, Ann) and proud buddy of the lovely, though very sickie, Ursa.
I just wanted to say thanks for the support that you have given Ann over the past couple of days. She’s been nothing but a bundle of worry. Ursa is still very unwell, but she’s hanging in there. I have a good feeling that she’s going to pull through even though she looks so vulnerable right now. She’s got a big heart and I don’t think she’s about to give up anytime soon. Thanks again, Alan. |
Ursa update...
had a few flecks of blood in her poo last night.. BUT overall vet said she seems perkier today.. so thats a good sign.. however when they went to give her som eoral medication she cried out n pain.. she has ulcers in her mouth now .. doc says prolly from all the being sick but its whats more than likely keeping her from eating right now..so.. she still got a few more days in vets before we can finally bring her home.. still day by day.. but i am encouraged by the perky news myself =) |
Poor Ursa.
Great news that she made it through the night, and sounds like the vet is hopeful. She's lucky to have such loving parents. Sending sheepie hugs. Hope she feels better soon. |
Poor Ursa!!! |
I went to go see her at lunch time and she's looking soooooooo sorry. I just sat with her for a while and gave her some loving. The doc say we're not out of the woods yet, bet she feels a lot happier about the situation than she did yesterday and she's actually managed to sit up some today.
I'll feel happer once I know that she's had a bite of food and been able to keep it down. Hopefully she'll be home in a couple of days, then we can start having some fun and put all this nasty stuff behind us. |
Give the little munchkin a kiss from me and Panda |
Oh, your poor baby girl! Luckily, it sounds like you've got a good vet who is doing their best to get your little girl back to health. Hope to hear she continues to improve! How are your other pets doing? Did you manage to get rid of the lice? |
Our vet has been fantastic really. This pup was in such terrible state and they're doing a bang up job of taking care of her.
She's still got a couple of lice hanging about here and there, but nothing like she had before. I guess in some ways I should have been much more cautious when we were looking around for our new buddy, but even knowing what we know now, I'd still have taken her in a heartbeat. I think we were meant to find her. Our other pets seem to be doing just fine. Guinness, our other dog, has been in need of extra attention though. Her mothering instinct has kicked in and she's wondering where the new pup has gone. As for Tonka, the cat... He's his usual self so far. Getting in places he shouldn't be, begging for junk food and being generally annoying. Once Ursa gets bigger, I'm pretty sure I can train her to sit on Tonka. |
I'm just getting updated - I hope your baby gets better, It does really sound like your vet's doing a great job- both with Ursa and keeping you guys up to speed.
|
Poor girl!
I am glad you have a great Vet. Sounds like she is getting excellent care. You, Ursa and your family will be in my prayers. |
Wishing Ursa a speedy recovery! |
ah how sad, I do hope Ursa will soon be healthy and happy, and thank goodness she has loving and caring parents |
its not looking good this morning...=(((
her glucose was really low and vet had to give her a double dose and it doesnt seem to be working.. we are praying really hard at the moment. |
Prayers being said for the wee one. |
You poor thing! I'm praying for your Ursa. |
It’s with an extremely heavy heart that I have to tell you that our little sweet heart, Ursa, passed away this morning.
The poor little girl had taken all that she could take. She put up an incredible fight against all of the various parasites and infections that she had, and I’d like to think that she fought so hard because she had something to live for… A family that loved her and adored her despite our very brief friendship. Our journey in to the world of Old English Sheepdogs has been cut short for now, but Ursa has left a mark in our hearts that will last a lifetime. In our short friendship, she has already taught me a lot and I know that over time she’ll still teach us even more. Take care of our friends up there and be waiting for us. Alan. |
Oh Alan, I am sooo sorry. Its just not fair. Poor little Ursa. You and your family are in my thoughts. |

Thanks, Darcy. We're still at quite a loss at the moment, but we totally appreciate your kind thoughts. |
Poor girl. I am so very sorry for your loss.
She did put up a good fight, and you did everything you could for her. Both of you will be in my thoughts. |
My deepest sympathy and most sincere condolances. |
I am so very very sorry What a tragic and sad experience experience. |
I am so very sorry for your loss. |
I'm so sorry! At least she's no longer suffering, poor girl. |
I'm so, so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family. |
I just read your post, with the sad news your puppy died.
How tough on all of you. You did all you could, and more than some would. Poor baby, at least she's not suffering anymore. I wish this had a better outcome. |
I,m so sorry for your loss of your special little girl. I will be thinking of you at this time hugs to you from the gang |
Thanks you all so much for your kind words. You have no idea how much they mean to us.
Your are so right... where she is right now, she is no longer suffering and she is able to be a puppy once again. I'm sure that our buddies that are up there are looking after her right now. She's in good hands!!!! Thank you all again! |
I am so sorry for your loss, hugs to you at this sad time. |
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I'm sure our Jake is nuzzling that little puppy right now, showing Ursa the ropes. |

I'm just catching up. I left you a post in the other section. Again I am so so sorry.
You can really measure a person by the eloquence of which they handle devastating situations. I could feel your pain but yet she was so lucky to have her brief time with such a loving family. Tonka is such a cute name. My brothers grew up with Tonka trucks. Brings back memories. Hugs to your other dog too. How sad she's missing the puppy. I think animals have a lot of feelings. JMO. You are in my thoughts. |
I am so very sorry for your loss. Fortunately, Ursa had a wonderful family to see her through. |
