stop smoking

Has anyone out there recently quit smoking? I was with the Dr today and are going to try a med called CHANTIX. I have to set my stop date first. Then we will go from there.

Its not recent for me...and I don't know about the med you mentioned, but...I know the stuggle, and I'm here for you.

Good luck!!! Take it one craving at a time!
It really will be a challenge. I started when I was 14 or 15 and well I am 44 now. 8O Thats a long time. Don't even want to do the math on that.
Don't give up...I'm 56 and quite 2.5 years ago. You can do it! HONEST!
My husband quit a month ago and is all over me to quit. Part of me wants to quit and another part of me doesn't. Does that make sense?
Yea...it does, Wynette. I quit for 8 years when I was pregnant with my son (who is now 22). When his dad and I divorced (in 1991) I started up again. I had one...and by the weekend was back up to 1 1/2 packs a day.

2 and 1/2 years ago, when I went to my doc for my annual check up, he talked to me about quitting....not a lecture, just a chat...and he ended it with "Next time we have this conversation, it will probably be in Highland Park Hosp."

For some reason, that had a major impact on me. Just the matter of fact way he said it..no drama...just fact.

That was June 12th, 2004. I quit June 13th, and haven't had a cigarette since. However...(with my doc's approval) I'm still chewing Nicorette gum.

Apparently, no harm...no foul.
GET THE GUM!!!

About Nicotine Gum for quitting smoking
I can't chew gum due to the dental work I have in my mouth (veneers and caps).
Ahhh.

USE THE PATCH!
Wynette, I totally understand how you feel because I am the same. Part of me wants to quit and part of me doesn't. I will turn 50 in May (NO SMART COMMENTS) and I don't want to be 50 years old and still smoking.

We need to make up our minds and set a date. Let's keep the discussion going and maybe it will prompt one of us to take action.
I'm here to cheer all of you on! Just let me know your start dates, and I will put on my cheerleading outfit! :cheer:
My start date will be Dec 11th. I started my meds today so 1 week from that I will be scheduled to quit. I just hope I don't gain to much weight. I heard that most of the time you gain weight after you quit smoking.
I could really use a buddy to do this with me. Any takers?
I found that best thing to do to keep your mind and the weight off was to keep moving. When I wanted to smoke, instead, I played with the dogs, took them for a walk or jumped on the elliptical. Over time, I didn't need a substitute anymore.

Don't get discouraged. It takes a long time for it start feeling natural without a cigarette in your hand. Don't think it's not going to take just because you can't stop thinking about it. It does get better, but unfortunately, it does take time.
bge,
I'm so proud of you for taking this first step. Stay strong and remember why you want to quit. I know you can do it!
bge,

My start date is going to be 1/1. You go girl you can do it. I am willing to be your personal cheerleader (and if I don't do a good job - I can let hubby on here and he can hound you instead of me until 1/1 - )
I quit smoking a few times....

It is soooooo hard to do. The last time I quit I swore I wouldn't start again because I would have to go through all those withdrawal symptoms and cravings etc. all over again.

I haven't looked back.

It does take time, but all of a sudden you notice that an hour has passed and you have not thought about smoking!!!!

The thing with gaining weight is you are used to having something in your mouth, so that is replaced by food....so get stocked up on low cal or sugar-free stuff...or raw veggies and get prepared...

And stay far away from smokers or places that allow smoking....for the first while, anyway....!

Good luck!
Best of luck to you!!! You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do smoking cessation counseling for my patients and run a support group for employees at my clinic but I can't manage to get Doug to quit. It is a very difficutly thing to do but YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!
Staying away from smokers is the hard part. My husband and son both smoke. We never smoke in the house but there will always be access to them. But I will do it. The money I would have spent on cigs is going in a jar for a plane ticket and spending spree . I want to go back up to alaska. We were up a few years ago and I fell in love with the place. My nephew lives in Anchorage.
I wish I could quit! i know I need to, and part of me wants too, but I enjoy it, darnit! I'm also afraid of failure.... :( . I'v been thinking of trying hypnistism or acupuncture, has anyone tried these methods???

I wish you both good luck and maybe I'll pick a date soon too!
My friend Nancie went to an accupunturist. She had never tried quitting before (because she loved it so much and didn't want to) , and was a heavy smoker. I think she went several times, but she is now 5 years smokefree :cheer: .

Good luck!!!!!!!!
My grandmother went the hypnosis route and did great!

Everybody just quit at once and then you can occupy yourselves being cranky with each other. The rest of us will stand around and encourage you!!!!!
Doug has done Hypnosis, drugs, accupuncture, lazer light therapy, gum, patches, lozenges, inhalers and me screaming.

NOTHING WORKS
I HAVE BEEN QUIT FOR 1 1\2 YEARS. I CAN TELL YOU WHILE IN THE BEGINING TRY TO START EXERCISING. IT IS WHAT HELPED ME THROUGH THE JITTERS AND IT KEEPS THE WEIGHT OFF. AFTER ABOUT 3 WEEKS ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU WILL REALLY TAST FOOD AGAIN. WHENEVER I HAD A CRAVING I WOULD GO FOR A RUN. I JUST HELPED ME. ANYWAY GOOD LICK ITS NOT EASY, BUT IT IS POSSIBLE, AND YOU WILL FEEL SO GREAT WHEN ITS DONE. I TREAT NOT SMOKING LIKE AN ALCOHOLIC TREATS ALCOHOL. I CAN'T HAVE A SMOKE NOT A DRAG NOT JUST ONE NOT EVER. IF I DO IT TAKES NO TIME AND I AM RIGHT BACK TO A FULL FLEDGED SMOKER AGAIN. GOOD LUCK

If your a smoker still...please, please read this!!!

Ok, for all of you that need a reason to quit, here goes.

I work with a man named Leo. Leo was a very heavy smoker. 5 years ago he was diagnosed with lung cancer. It was pretty far advanced. They rushed him to the hospital, did surgery and put him on chemo. By some miracle, he made it through.

A year later the cancer returned. In his aspofigus (don't know how to spell it). He started chemo again, and had radiation to his throat. They burned his throat terribly, and he literally couldn't eat. He was so sick (and I know this sounds terrible) but we would bet if "today was the day he'd drop dead at work". He looked like a bag of bones. Somehow, he made it through.

Last summer, yep....his cancer was back. He refused chemo...and they wouldn't do radiation because it was throughout his body.

This is a man with no wife, no kids, and his only sister lives 3000 miles away. Work is everything to him. So throughout his ordeal, he kept working.

He agreed to an experiment drug. It had a terrible effect on every part of his body. He and I sat down last week and told me the thing he regrets most is that everything he's been through, he still has friends that smoke. He couldn't understand why they watch what he went through, and didn't learn.

Leo died last Friday. From all of the drugs, chemo and everything, his heart gave out. The night before he worked until 9 pm. He went home, went to bed, woke up, and died. I suspect that's how he wanted it. He was only 56 years old.

I have a great deal of respect for him. Always will.

Please someone reading this, learn from him and quit.

God rest your soul, Leo. I'll miss you terribly bad.
Hugs to you, Deborah, and I hope that Leo is resting comfortably now.
o yea and don't forget LOTS of water. It helps to flush you system of the nicotien. even when you feel you will float ayay. I will never forget the time i quit and was drinking the water a lot. i was moving to South Carolina and on the drive up there was a car wreck. the traffic did not move for ever but i would have been smoking the whole time so i just kept drinking the water for something to do with my hands ( you will find you can only chew so much gum before your jaw falls off) anyway i had to pee so badly and th etraffic was going nowhere. i fanally jumped out of my car and left it there in the highway and hiked off into the woods to go. Funny thing is when i returned several people were leaving their cars to do the same thing. I will never forget that trip.
I am going to start Wellbutrin on the 1st, I am so nervous. I quit before and it lasted 2.5 yrs until I got divorced, wish I had never started up again. This time will be more difficult because my live in boyfriend smokes and will never quit. I smoke more than I ever did now, 1.5 packs a day, UGG! Good luck to all of us who are going to battle this nasty habit!!!
Good luck!!! I know its hard to quit with a smoker around. My husband smokes. But remember, you are doing this FOR YOU!

We're all here for you :ghug: !
I smoke, I like it, I know I shouldn't but like Doug I've tried them all except for Tasker's Mom screaming  and I need to put on weight  but untill we are really serious about quitting I don't think anything will work

If you don't want to quit for you...how about quitting for your sheepie....I bet they don't like inhaling your smoke.
