Then Parker will pick a small inexpensive toy to compliment the gift. A girafee, a lion, etc. It will end up costing around $45-50...the material itself at 50% off still cost me $32, and I need to buy a fringe or other trim yet. Sewing is always more than you'd expect it to be. I might not do a trim, and just rollover the corduroy edge to the flannel. Her theme is safari print, but I don't know if it is classic with brown colors, or more trendy cartoon like in greens and blues. I can ask. They do not know what they are having. Do you think she will like this? It will be the size of a crib mattress...and will be a good floor blanket. You saw the puppy quilt I made...it would be this style. With flannel on top(what touches baby) in safari print, and the bottom side is courduroy(sp) squares 6 different colors of brown, tan and cream. The one I made Madelyn...kind see it under the cats. It has a fuzzy white trim. Pink flannel on one side and pink, blue and yellow squares. One solid and 1 print of each color. |

I think that's an awesome gift. My friend had a shower a few months ago and one of her friend's moms made her several quilts and they were just such a nice, personal, useful gift.
I would say choose a less bright pattern (the more neutral safari choice)...that wasy it would fit in amongst the brighter things, or go along with the subdued things. |
I think it's a beautiful gift, but do you want to put in so much effort making such a nice gift for a baby shower for a teacher you were less than thrilled with? It just seems like a lot of effort for someone who isn't even a friend.
Lovely, beautiful gift I'm sure she'll appreciate though. Maybe no trim, just a nicely rolled edge. |
I already bought all the fabric, and cut the squares last night. I just hope she picked classic safari.
We had this same style for Parker when he was born. I might ask her today when I pick up the kids...if her safari is brown. There is a really cute bedding line out there that is blue and green...so I'm not sure. I tried to find a picture but so far no luck. Click on the link and this little lion is similar to the lion printed on the flannel that I bought. I am hoping this is the style...you can buy this at toysrus. Here is a ton of baby safari prints, I don't know if she shops online tho. http://www.babysupermall.com/main/brows ... dding.html |
What an awesome idea! |
I went inside today to thank her for all the positive things she had to say...at teacher conference she was pretty busy. So after mulling over all we talked about I wanted to thank her. And then ask about her colors.
She felt ill during the day and went home, so I didn't get the chance. I'll start sewing, and have it for her soon, just incase she doesn't make it all the way to Christmas break. The new teacher is taking a more active role, and today for half a day was on her own. I'll take pictures of it and show you guys before I wrap it up. |
What a sweet thing to do. |
Honestly, I feel for her, I took her words, her style of teaching, the notes home, all of it in a negative way.
After talking to her a couple times, and esp at the conference, I got to understand her point of view alot more. Then talking to another mom who has twin boys...1 in this class and 1 in the the other...she prefers the higher expectations Parker's teacher expects. I appreciated her showing us his work from Sept to Nov...and honestly there is huge improvement in his ability. I guess I was expecting to see this improvement spread out a little more. I hope too she sees me as an alli not an enemy. I want to show her that we do care about her as our son's teacher. I am going to try an organize a class party for her. Have a potluck snack day. Some of the other moms are going in collectively to buy her a gift, but I already started this. Hearing what everyone here had to say about it all, and about teachers in general...I want to make her know she is a good teacher. I don't dislike her right now, and she knows where I am coming from. So we are good. Plus who doesn't love babies. I am excited about all things baby. |
I think that is a fabulous gift. Will you make me a quilt if I volunteer to tutor or play with your son? |
What a special gift. Glad things have turned around. |

no problem |
I think it's a lovely gift idea: very thoughtful and personal. How good of you to assess the situation with her as his teacher and move beyond your initial gut reaction to understanding one another and working together for what is best for Parker. Bravo. |
When you make a quilt, how do you make them really heavy? I love the feeling of those old fashioned homemade quilts, so heavy they wrap themselves around you. I always wondered how they are made to feel like that. |

My grandma used to make them and stuff them full of duck feathers-- and I mean STUFF. The king size one on my parents' bed when I was a kid was almost too heavy to lift. Then again, that wasn't exactly a quilt like this one. It's a Polish word that I can't remember. Either way-- it was duck and it was heavy. |
Using cotton batting will make it heavier too, and using multiple
layers. All my heavy quilts are all-cotton, but if you make them too heavy, you tend to wake up tired from all that weight all night! Shellie |
With mine, I use cotton batting, a little thicker as I tend to use mine more for a floor blanket, and then as a decorative throw for the end of the bed. I might make this one with a center of this newer quilt batt...does not pull apart, but stays like fabric.
I've been working on it today and just the weight of the corduroy makes it's heavier. But I do need to add something in middle to help make it feel smooth and not lumpy. I do sew all my seams in one direction and make it feel as flat as possible and then a top stitch...to make them stay flat permanently. I have a 70 year old quilt...I'm not sure, but the maker of it used old nylons to stuff the inside...it made it very heavy. |
My doctor's office has a quilt that's incredibly heavy. I think they keep it for when people are cold they can put it on their laps. But I've never found it to be very warm or comfortable. Although the weight feels nice, the plastic slip cover ruins the experience.
Well, that plus the x-ray technician moving me around on the table. |
