Limping a little, sign of hip dysplasia?

My 4 month old has been limping a little lately & I read that this is a symptom of hip dysplasia. The vet says if he's still like that at 6 months when he gets neutered, we can get an xray.
Could it be something else? I'm really concerned & I don't know what to expect if it is that.
thanks

He could've just pulled a muscle playing. What kind of limp is it? Is he favoring one side over the other or bunny hopping? Don't worry yet. 4 month olds are little balls of energy so it isn't unheard of for him to have strained something. Some dogs are also subject to "growing pains" so it may just be a rough patch that he's going through. I hope everything is all right.
Thanks for the quick reply. It's his front right paw, & each day it gets a little worse. We just clipped his nails for the first time.
Maybe that was it?
And you mention play. He plays on & off all day with our older puppy Chum.
I hope it's nothing.
thanks
Chewie has a limp on his LEFT front leg - which I am assuming is from running and wrestling. We are watching it too. It seems to cause no pain. I've gone over his whole leg shoulder to toenails, between his toes and everywhere. Nothing is sensitive, red, cut or poking him. I did deep muscle palpation - no pain. In fact, he loved it! Good luck with your baby sheepie.
We did a test with his front legs and checked his joints. He was ok with his left leg but when we stretched his right leg he winced and reacted with pain. We did manage to get an appointment to the vet tomorrow. Maybe take X-rays, but it could be a muscle problem. Hopefully it won't be serious.
Thanks all for your input.
Hope that the vet finds nothing seriously wrong. Poor baby.
If he has not had some sort of accident that you know off or been charging around and pulled something and if he is still a very young dog then there is a possibility of OCD in the shoulder, elbow, ankle joint areas of the front leg.

OSTEOCHONDROSIS can be a problem in larger breeds that have rapid growth periods as youngsters. Usually the first sign of this is limping and pain. It is a loose or flap of cartilage in the joints or growth plates. Usually lameness and pain is the first sign of this problem. Around the 4 - 10 month age group..

So if no muscle/tendon pull or strain that you can think of that has made him limp and have pain ,then there is a possibility of OCD.

Unfortunately the only solution to OCD is surgery to removed the offending piece of cartilage with x-raying the area first to detect where the flap or loose cartilage is.

Hoping all is well and just a silly puppy pull or strain. If the limping has been going on for awhile & it does not seem to be getting better, then definately see the vet,. even if it is just a strain then anti-inflam drugs can be precribed and rest/confinement to help it settle down. :D
Well, the vet said that since the pain was localized in the shoulder, it very well could be osteochondrosis, as Lisa had suggested. (It could be a simple strain or pull as well, but not as likely) She gave him an anti-inflammatory shot & told us to limit his exercise. We have to give him glucosamine until a year & a half. If the limp doesn't ease up, we'll get an xray.
thanks for all your input.

:)
Hope all goes well. Your both in our thoughts.
I hope your boy ends up being fine and it is just "growing pains".
After I got Maxwell he had the "growing pains" in three of his legs.....it progressively moved from one to another. At times he couldn't even walk. I had to carry him outside, etc. It was horrible. And the pain he was in was worse because I coudn't do much to help except pills and shots. We were at the vet every few days. One night I even took him to the emergency vet and they put him on morphine. My vet immediately suggested to stop feeding him puppy food ( he was 3 months at the time). But all you can do is let it run its course. I hope your puppy gets better soon!
