My 2-year old OES just caught a toenail in the small gap between the planks and tore it off below the base of the nail. It should grow back but it was painful and is a messy injury with a high risk of infection. |

Sorry to hear about your OES, I have heard of that happening too, hope it heals up OK, thinking of you both.
Great advice to let people know how easily things like that can happen. |
Oh Gosh! I'm very sorry to hear that happened to your baby. I hope it will heal quickly. |
Ouch! Poor baby I hope it heals up quickly.... |
Sorry to hear that. For a second, I thought you were going to post about an evil splinter. Hope you pup gets better soon. |
OOOh, that is painful sounding. I hope your dog heals up quickly and infection free. |
OOOOWWWWWWW |
Oh! Ouch! It sounds like a pretty freak accident but just one more thing to make me more careful. |
It must be toenail season!
I have 2 students in my dog classes who have had ripped or torn nails in the past few weeks. |
Ewww and OUCH!! I hope it heals quickly. |
That sounds excruciatingly painful. Hope your sheepie heals fast. |
Poor baby. I have four dogs and have a plank deck . Only once did one of my dogs rip a toenail and it was my German Shepherd. It did not rip to the blood vessel but you could see it. My dogs run on the deck all the time . I often wonder why it has not happened more but I observed their feet on the deck and toes don't seem to get in the cracks but because of the tonail my girl limped for a few days. I am sure it hurt her toe too!!Hope your dog feels better! |
Oh my goodness... that sounds painful. Hope your OES feels better soon. I would have never thought that could even happen. Thanks for letting us know...we were considering replacing our plank deck...now that I know this can happen I will think of another solution to a wood deck. |
Thanks for the kind comments. The vet removed the broken nail all the way back inside the toe, cut off the damaged core of nerve and blood supply and wrapped it up. I have to go back in three weeks after it has grown out bit so that she can remove the split portion below the break that she couldn't get to. She said if she doesn't, he will keep splitting the nail once he is walking on it. He's on some antibiotics for a few days.
Ever since the sedative wore off, poor Charlie just sits, looking forlorn and holding out his bandaged paw whenever my wife or I walk by. Sheepdogs can put on the most pitiful act when they want everyone to know that life is treating them unfairly. |
