My Maggie used to jump up all the time when I first got her. Now she only does it if she is really bored or there is something really irresistible on the counter. This is what worked for me:
1. Lessen the interest by keeping all surfaces free of delicious food rewards 2. Keep him on a leash and step on it while you are working in the kitchen so he can't jump up 3. Keep him out of the kitchen with a closed door or baby gate. 4. Give him plenty of exercise before dinner and then a kong to keep him busy at dinnertime. 5. Keep him in the crate at dinner time. (I am not sure what your objection is to this method. I found it very effective and the least difficult). Good luck! |
All of Val's suggestions are good.... Dancer is bad for counter surfing, so we really have to make sure there is nothing to attract her attention up there.
Panda recently has been getting at anything on the stove which is a scary habit, I don't want her to burn herself. I tell her no, get down, and then put her in the other room with a gate up til I'm sure the stove is cooled off and there is nothing on it. |
I don't know if this would help or not, but has anyone ever
used the no-jump harness? It's a harness that actually goes over back legs as well and limits how far they can stretch their bodies.
