Muttluks

I don't know if this is the right place to put this, but knowing about the matting after getting wet, I was wondering if anyone had tried the muttluks snowsuit or rain jugging suit. I was wondering if during the winter months, does the dog get cold enough for a snowsuit or would a rainsuit for the possibility wet snow would be better it would also come in handy for more than one season.

I am going to be moving to OR next year, so I wanted to see if anyone had tried them or not.

Another question would be about the boots.. when I get my pup he will be running with me.. obviously 8O and I wanted to get some of the boots, but I wasn't sure weather i should get the all weather or the fleece lined ones seeing as it will be winter. ( I should begetting him right before X-Mas :excited:  all willing  ) But I was also wondering, do I buy him the size he ill be wearing when he gets to full size or do I get him the size he is when he is a pup. I only ask because they look so adjustable! they are also pretty expensive and my hubby is getting a little annoyed at all the stuff I wanna get our new pup! LOL

Thanks for yur help!!

I think others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd wait until your pup is considerably older before taking him on any long runs. By the time he's ready, you should be able to buy the size boots that will fit him as a full grown dog. Myself, I've never had too much success with them. I got some for Lucy and she acted like her feet weren't a part of her body when she had them on. I've never seen any big enough for my boys.

If you're worried about matting, just make sure there are no mats on the feet before you go out. Water doesn't make mats but will tighten them up if they're there already. You can also try a paw wax like Musher's Secret to help keep snowballs from forming between the toes and to protect the pads.
I don't think a snow suit is necessary just for playing in the snow, but those raincoat things are popular among people who show oes. The boots also. From what I've hear, most definitely prefer the actual muttluks brand, not a cheaper copy, because of durability.
Their coats keep them pretty warm, but the rule of thumb is if it's too cold for you to play outside, it's too cold for your dog, coat or not.

Regarding running... I'm not sure if you mean just running around the yard, or actual running, but it's not a good idea to do regular strenuous running or jogging with a large breed dog til they are over 18 months and fully developed. This is to prevent strain to those quickly growing joints and muscles :)

Getting a new pup is so exciting! They'll only be pups once, so I'd buy to your hearts content, spoil him or her rotten
Thanks guys! Let me clarify.. I was going to be getting him acclimatized to the runs by taking him out for walks in the neighborhood. But I wasn't going to run him for a while. I didn't think he'd be ready for quite a while. I just didn't know how well the boots worked. I still would be taking him for walks in the winter, do you think that he would need boots for walking the neighborhood?

Stacey and Butterstoch are both correct, no serious jogging with your new lil pup till after the rapid growth spurt is over or you can do a lot of damage to their joints and developement.

Get some boots when the dog is more mature as they are expensive and if you plan to Hike, Jog in all terrains then Muttluks are one of the best for winter, mud, snow and rough terrain.

I also have summer ones also as we get very hot so it protects the pads from the hot ground, also from burrs and rough surfaces when we are out and about in the bush, here is Brie modelling the summer ones, she loves them and I always take them away when we go to the farm, I also have wet weather ones too, takes them a little while to get use to them, but they appreciate them when they get use to them on their feet. :D

brie looks so pretty! yuki has those too!!! :)
We have Muttluks, thank you Holly!, and they work great. I would probably go with the adult size as your pup will grow VERY fast and they are expensive to buy several sizes.

Is that right? Maggie seems completely unaffected by the coldest weather. I've had to get better cold-weather gear so I can stay outside as long as she likes to play. She never seems to get cold, even with short hair.
Some dogs don't show their pain or in this case... whether they are cold.

I know our news channel always says what Willowsprite just said as a reminder for the idiots who try to let their dogs live outside in Alaska. But basically, they just say they need to wear a jacket, and not stay outside in temp below 32 or so for long periods. We've never put Yuki in one, but we definitely cover up those feet when she's in any snow!
Well, I guess I should just wait to take him on long walks till spring.. LOL it's ok. I think I won't wanna be out there all that long anyway.
I'm going to get him some adult size muttlucks.. the all weather kind, so that when it rains in the spring, although spring isn't notoriously wet here... but it is in OR I've heard, we'll be able to get out there.
He'll be small so I think I'm going to stick to the sidewalks so that he doesn't build up any snowballs. I remember a german shepheard that we had used to get huge snowballs and she'd click along on the floor until they melted looking annoyed. 8O
I am also going to get that full body rainsuit for the rain in OR, but again.. not needed right now.
Thanks guys!!

Maybe you can start him out wearing a couple old pairs of socks. That way he is used to have things on his feet. While the socks themselves will get wet...they could still prevent snow getting in his paws, and enable safer snow play?

Hmmm...maybe I will use this suggestion myself...for when Izzie plays in the snow. :D
That's agood idea! I have a ton of old socks that I don't wear any more... I hate socks :twitch:

Thanks!!!
Nic
That's brilliant! I've already spent a small fortune on Christmas gifts for Barkley, but I was thinking he'd still need boots for the winter. Now we can wait until next winter to get him boots.
I wouldn't worry about it... they are dogs, and mine have done just fine so far with no boots :)
I think unless you're showing and have a reason to keep the feet covered, it's more of a pain than anything else-- especially if you have multiple dogs!
But look how cute they are!

Gasp! Shoes on the bed! 8O
It's okay if it's in a hotel room. All the rules are thrown out the window when you're not at home. 8)
     Maxmm, your furkid looks so cute! Who wouldn't wanna put their pup in boots if they can?!
