Federated has gobbled up many stores including Marshall Fields, Filenes, Foley's, Hecht's, Kaufmann's, LS Ayres, Meier & Frank, Robinsons-May, Strawbridges and The Jones Store. Federated's line is a sensation across the nation. Federated has down graded all the former stores and in the Chicago Area the beloved Marshall Fields. There is an interesting site called fieldsfanschicago. org. Check it out. In Chicago, people are outraged that Marshall Fields has been taken away from them. We should all do our part by boycotting Macy's and Bloomingdales for our holiday shopping. Please join in for a national boycott of Macy's and Bloomingdales. fieldsfanschicago.org |

We are with you!
We miss our Filenes! |
Totally agree. Are you going downtown tonight for the light show? |
I've heard of Bloomington's, Macy's and MarshallFields, but not Federated? |
What does around, comes around. I remember when Fields gobbled up Dayton's.
In my area, Macy's (formerly Marshall Fields, Formerly Daytons) is the only decent department store around, within 120 miles. |
I'm with you on this. I went to Macy's a few weeks ago to check it out...a bunch of junk! |
I don't recognize one of the stores mentioned so far...Is it because they don't have chains in Canada or maybe I don't shop enough? |
Federated is a company that owns macys and Bloomingdales. They purchased many regional department stores and changed all the names of these store to macys to make a national department chain.
I do not think there are any macys or bloomingdale stores in Canada. And for Dayton Hudson, Dayton Hudson bought Marshall Fields and then Dayton Hudson openned Target which was a big success so then changed the company name to Target. Then Dayton Hudson-Target Corp. changed all the Dayton Hudson stores to Marshall Fields. So Marshall Fields had nothing to do with the name of the Dayton Hudson stores. |

Some day Federated will be owned by Walmart |
Macy's just came to Richmond in September, replacing Hecht's and I am SO SO SO happy. So I don't believe I will be joining in the boycott. |

They're all US only stores. Don't worry, Nicole. I'm sure you shop enough - just like the rest of us! |
When Marshall Fields became the name of Daytons, indeed the stores did change and began to carry the Fields brands rather than Daytons. At least that's what happened to the Daytons in my area when it adopted the Fields name. In Minnesota, the name change was very controversial since Daytons was founded here. However, corporate thought that Marshall Fields had bigger name recognition, which was probably true outside of Minnesota. Even more, the shift in brand/look was not well received. I'm not jumping for joy at Macy's, either. I don't much care for the shift (again), and the store has lost some features I really liked in Daytons and even in Fields. |
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't there a Stern's as well??? I thought that fields had owned Stern's which went out of business in NJ about 7 years ago by where I used to live.
Also, isn't fields someone's actual last name...And something about the company starting in the early 20's. |
Actually, Federated sold a few of those companies already. Robinsons-May (which is Lord and Taylor in my parts) was sold to a real estate company for an exorbitant amount of money. It was a hot company to buy, not because of the company but because of the super sweet flagship store location in NYC that was heavily coveted real estate. My mom's checks are cut from Robinsons-May even though she technically works for Estee Lauder (they do cosmetics salaries very weird when you're a manager). The one really cool thing about Federated is that when you retire, you get to pick what discount that you want for the rest of your life from any of their stores. Of course, now that the real estate company stepped in, my mom lost that opportunity!
We had Hudson's before Marshall Fields and, of course, now Macy's. I think each one has been an upgrade so I really can't argue about the change. Also, it's not like boycotting will bring the old ones back-- it was their choice to sell to Federated in the first place. It's just business. |
I grew up with Macy's and when I moved to Rochester, I was stuck with crappy stores like Kaufmanns and Bontons.
Few months ago Macys bought out Kaufmanns,so i'm thrilled that ill be doing some holiday shopping at a decent store. |

Add WALMART to your list! |

Why? Also, why not target Target for not allowing any charitable solicitations on their property, I think the Salvation Army said their loss of revenue will be about $9 million dollars. |
Maybe we could just make all of our gifts out of household items and yard waste this year. Woohoo! I can't wait to get my compost! |
Actually, as difficult as it is (and as imperfect as I am about following my own guidelines), I do try hard to give my business to those who I believe treat others fairly--workers, community, etc. It gets pretty complicated and downright inconvenient sometimes, but I honestly do try. And because I live in a small city and get to see first hand the challenges of a small community struggling to survive and thrive, I also try to buy locally, when I can. It is both a blessing and a curse to know quite a few of the people around town who are in various businesses. |
Why WalMart? Illegal immigration issues is one reason, but the thing I hate most is their deceitful "Made in the USA" advertizing.
I started shopping there because of those ads and know others that did so for the same reason. I try to buy American made as often as possible. I also support local business. Its nice having the corner "mom and pop" grocery store when you live 30 minutes outside of town. I want them to stay there, even if it does cost me a few cents extra. Pam (mouthypf) |
As a lifelong Chicagoan, I have seen changes in Fields...but its always been Fields! When Macy's announced they were buying Fields, that was ok, because it hasn't been owned by the Field's family for many many years. BUT! How dare they change the name???? That's just insulting. Marshall Fields is a Chicago institution! They were the first to say, "Give the Lady what she wants!" Apparently, Macy's doesn't adhere to that policy |

Appears they have had a change of heart- https://sites.target.com/site/en/corpor ... D03-003704 |
That's not a change of heart, that's an appeasement/apology.
I heard that they were giving $1,000,000 to the Salvation army plus the proceeds from the sale of that angel, since the Salvation Army (or anyone else, either) won't be allowed to beg for donations outside their stores. |
If I read one of the articles right on that site, they donate more than $2 million "a week."
WOW, if Target, and all the other stores that can afford to do that would "really" cut prices, maybe some of their boastful donations wouldn't needed. Mouthypf (Pam) |
I, personally, am glad they don't allow solisitations outside of their stores. I'm so tired of boy scout popcorn sales, girl scout cookies and the others that I feel assulted by when I have to go grocery shopping. I'm always glad to contribute (sometime too much!) but want to be able to do my chores without feeling "guilted" into giving to a cause I've probably already given too. I have, however, found the Salvation Army people are NOT as obtrusive when they are collecting. But they are already out, and its not even Thanksgiving...and I always feel guilty just walking by them, even though by the end of the season I always end up giving generously. My biggest pet peeve are the ones that get you when you are at traffic lights, and you have to pretend you don't see them, because you just gave the previous corner. (I sound like such a Scrooge, but I'm not...really.) |
I agree Deb.
I know they must make tons of money doing this each year otherwise they wouldn't keep doing it, but I HATE it. I see them and cringe and try to go in another door (even with the boy/girl scouts--they need more parents around--they run up to you and are hyper and say COOKIES COOKIES COOKIES, and I'm like, shhhh, maybe if you asked nicely I'd buy your stinking cookies!). I'd prefer to give of my own volition, though, and to my charity of choice, and honestly, I don't really carry any cash, but I feel like these people think I'm lying to them when I tell them that. |
Boycott Bloomingdales. They are unfair to their employess and especially their older (senior citizens) staff. |
Guest, did this happen to you, or someone you know? |
Filene's is gone? I remember when I lived in Quebec, one of the high points of summer travel in the NE US was heading to Filene's basement! |
Like Deb- I'm not so much upset about the sale itself-- but Lazarus is now Macy's in Columbus. I want the name Lazarus back! |
Filene's Basement was franchised into stupidity; I'm not sure if any of the franchises still exist. However, the original Filene's Basement in downtown Boston still exists. Unfortunately it is currently closed while the building it is in undergoes major renovations. |
The Chicago Filene's is closed...and (in my opinion) rightfully so. It never compared to the Boston store! |

Did it close recently? I was just at one in Chicago a few months ago. |
Hmmm.....I think it was about six month ago, unless I was misinformed, which seems to be happening more frequently these day! |
